Is Bieber a has been? Didn’t he just headline at Coachella?

      source
      • wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world ⁨33⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

I don’t know what ‘headline’ or ‘Coachella’ means so that’s a yes. Unless headline as in newspaper and Coachella as in a line of sex toys… which wouldn’t change the answer to the question.

      • Zorcron@lemmy.zip ⁨5⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

It’s fascinating really. He went directly from a wanna-be to a has-been, directly bypassing the state of “being”. Scientific studies have been conducted on the phenomenon, but it is still a mystery as to how this happened.

As a web dev, I feel awkward reminiscing about the things period of web history when IE was a solidly built, standards-compliant browser.

It was like the IE team saw their history was causing them to lose all market share, and committed to fixing misdeeds since they held an underdog position. But for most, it was too little too late.

For several years, I tested in IE, not Chrome, because it was most strictly standards-compliant, and I could be sure that if it worked there, it would work in other browsers. (Now, if you use Edge, it’s just a repaint of Chrome)

    source
    • tempest@lemmy.ca ⁨4⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I didn’t start dev until after the chrome hegemony but I assume ie was only compliant because MS was the one writing the standards. Much like how chrome is essentially the defacto standard now.

      source
      • Katana314@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

At this point in time, Chrome was jumping bounds ahead of the others with standards, and most websites were specifically written for webkit, even beginning to disregard Firefox. Worse, Chrome was often going back and forth on how a certain new standard should implement, leading to, for instance, CSS files declaring 7 or 8 different ways of doing a linear-gradient.

Your sentiment on Microsoft isn’t unique, which is part of why the web consortium wasn’t actually keen on listening to them most of the time. Them having monetary/OS influence didn’t actually lead to a lot on the W3C - they went ahead of them for most ActiveX work.

    • chrisashtear@lemmy.zip ⁨4⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

It was really hard to use ie at the time. I worked at lockheed making a javascript repair sim, and it took 3 minutes to load in IE vs 10 secobds in chrome

Skibidi Toilet isn’t really a comedy tho. It’s just giant mech fights and apparently the creator of it, some racist Georgian🇬🇪 zoomer lost all the rights to it after being fucked over by some company he signed a contract with.

Yeah, wild lore both in the show itself and in the background. Got into it because my niece fucking loves it and just… no shit, it is a wild time.

Some of that feels much more ~2008ish. But given the lifecycle of memes back then, they still weren’t considered antiques in 2012…

    source
    • zip@lemmy.blahaj.zone ⁨8⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I agree; I was thinking the exact same thing. Maybe the original creator of this image lived somewhere where what memes were popular there was lagging a few years behind everyone else, haha.

The bag of chips full of air was literally the first meme I ever saw

    source
    • Omgpwnies@lemmy.world ⁨8⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

It’s amusing how each generation seems to independently come across the “empty chip bag” meme and the actual explanation - the bag is intentionally oversized and slightly inflated to give the chips a buffer against being crushed. I remember seeing it come up about once a decade, including pre-(consumer)internet.
