I’m pretty sure that CDB meant for the Devil’s solo to sound discordant and unmemorable. What I hear though sounds aggressive, passionate, and daring compared to Johnny’s “safe” catchy, melodic solo. Also they gave Johnny a call-and-response with vocalists so I’m not gonna hold the Devil’s backup band against him. Johnny was probably meant to be mocking the Devil by playing the same walkdown at the end, or maybe he just copied it. Either way the Devil gave up that contest way to easily.

On a technical level sure, but it was a fiddle contest not a technical contest. Johnny is the better fiddler since he knows the music the people like and dance to (a bunch of the lyrics are references to other songs). If the devil played his music to a barn full of dancers, the whole event would likely crumble.

There’s a sweet spot. Unpopular opinions that get upvoted need to be trivial enough to not make anybody uncomfortable or angry.
Something like “Toilet paper orientation doesn’t matter” is far more likely to be upvoted by somebody who disagrees with it than “Everything bad that happens to your children is your fault because you knew it was a possibility and had them anyway”.

Human euthanasia should be legalized and normalized, both medically assisted suicide and euthanasia when the person is suffering but unable to make decisions for themselves. If it’s an act of mercy to euthanize a pet who is suffering, then we should be able to have the same compassion for our fellow humans.

I’ve already seen a bunch of scare stories about doctors in Canada trying to force it onto patients who don’t want it. I can’t imagine its got to that point already, but the fear is real.
Also when it was my turn to do it to my cat it took me about 2 weeks of “maybe tomorrow we’ll see” putting off the inevitable. I didnt even really like the cat that much and it still hurt too much to do it when it needed done. I couldnt imagine being strong enough to make that decision for a parent or sibling.
100% the correct take in theory, in practice we’ll need to find a way to make sure sensible compassionate people are in charge every step of the way, which I’m not sure is truly possible to guarantee

I’ve already seen a bunch of scare stories about doctors in Canada trying to force it onto patients who don’t want it.
Most of that is being pushed by religious organizations that have been fighting against it for decades now. In reality the medical community were estimating a lot more requests than what they ended up experiencing.
It ends up they did not account for the fact that medical providers in hospice care have been “euthanizing” patients the whole time. Not in the “Doctor death” way, but it’s pretty standard for providers to be a little extra loose with the administration of morphine when caring for patients that are terminally ill and on their last few days or hours.

I don’t think that’s an unpopular opinion. I can’t see most people really carrying one way or the other but governments don’t like it because it’s messy to legalize murder but only underscertain circumstances, so they would prefer to just not deal with it at all.

Dogs suck. I don’t like them. Glad if you do, please enjoy. But they slobber, shed, smell and are generally mostly a nuisence. They can be fun for brief periods, but they’re way more work and hassle than they’re worth. My brother is thinking of getting a big dog and I hope he doesn’t because it would make me reluctant to spend a weekend at his place. I can’t believe the number of people who seriously admit to loving their dogs more than their kids. I can’t believe people consider themselves their pet’s “parent”. I can’t believe how forcefully the online community backlashes to the idea of kids or judgemental of “ill-mannered” and neurodiverse kids, yet will happily say “it is never a dog’s” fault, no matter how “bad” the dog is.
Cats can sometimes be ok, if they’re not noisy and don’t shed too much. But generally having animals in the house isn’t great at all.

I kind of agree. I like pics and vids of dogs, but actually being around them is kind of gross and scary. Cats are more my speed. They clean themselves. They don’t need to be taken outside just to take a shit. They usually don’t smell. They sleep a lot and generally just act really chill. I haven’t had a cat jump and bark (or whatever the cat equivalent would be) at me in the way that dogs do. I feel like I have an understanding with cats.

Want an even less popular opinion? A good portion of the reason people love their dogs so fiercely is because they are such a pain in the ass. It is basic cognitive dissonance: we love what we suffer for, like sororities and fraternities (because of the hazing etc.), military units (because of the misery, starting with boot camp), orthodox/intense religions (because of the constant self-denial and public embarrassment of living the rules), etc. Same with dogs.

i think the real main reason is looks, alot of people get dogs for thier looks, and not for what thier breed is designed to do. some owners dont like hearing that at all. and yes the popular ones always ends up in shelters or abandoned.

Creating ANY kind of smoke should be banned in public. By public I don’t mean just bus stops and trains and shit. Literally anywhere but maybe your house. And smoking indoors is even more disgusting. Smoking in your garden? Is there anyone living within ~20 feet? Forbidden. Smoke machines on concerts may have an exemption.
I also fucking had enough of people making fires every fucking time the weather gets too hot for me to keep my windows closed. Then my bedroom smells like the great fire of London and good luck having a good night’s sleep like that.

Pedofiles, those that think and do not act, deserve more compassion by society. They can’t help the way they feel. Acting on it is obviously extremely harmful but they can’t even talk about it, even to therapists, for fear of persecution. The current methods of suppression are harmful and akin to conversion therapy for lgbt folks. We need to allow them to have a voice and access to non harmful animated CP with all consenting adult voice actors or AI. In out current society they are akin to trans people in the 1950s

I know every generation says it about the next but gen Z is just fucking weak. Some great people and an admittedly, dealt a shitty hand.
But.
I’m going back to school as an elder millennial and my God, some of the craziness I’ve heard. A buddy teaches a film theory course a lot of kids use to satisfy early arts requirements at universities and he quickly realized if he didn’t show the movie in class, 2/3 of the class wouldn’t watch it despite being available through the school website. So, essentially, these kids (or their parents) are paying hundreds of dollars to watch movies instead of engaging.
The degree for which I’m going back recommends only 4 courses a tern with no work.I knew engineers who rocked 6 or 7, worked and were party animals.
Every advisor with whom I’ve spoke has basically said “look, if you’re going to treat it as an adult with adult work habits, you can handle 5 courses without trouble.” But they have all these disclaimers because kids and their parents go nuts when Johnny, who was just streaming hockey highlights all class somehow didn’t get a good grade.

Here’s an unpopular opinion for people to upvote because we’re supposed to upvote the opinion we think is unpopular:
Linux sucks more than the users want to admit and it’s fans are the worst.
If you have to learn to program stuff to fix something in your OS, then it’s not a good OS. This isn’t the case for most modern Linux, but there’s many examples of just having to learn all sorts of crap just to make it functional. With the other two mainstream OS they are plug and play. Lately they have done shitty choices with AI and everything so that’s not as much of the case, but at least there you don’t have to go in and fix the code to make something functional.
If Linux was that great, you wouldn’t have to do any of that. I find it’s a weird parallel to owning a crown vic, where you have to pile sandbags in the back so it’ll drive in literally any snow, and then when you talk about it people say it’s a skill issue because they are hardcore fans of a dumb cop car. If you have to do something special to make something functional, that’s not a feature, that’s a bug.
And then, ye gods, the Linux fans. I know of someone who was berated for almost an hour over not using Linux. The person getting yelled at was like, 7. They are the smug Internet atheists of the tech world. They won’t shut up about Linux. Their solution to anyone looking up how to fix something with their computer is to uninstall everything and switch to Linux, even if it’s unrelated. If someone has a criticism for Linux they have a meltdown. They feel smug and superior in their choice of OS, euphoric and enlightened with their own intelligence.
That being said I’m probably going to switch to Linux anyway. Because fuck the changes windows made.

Most comments complaining about vibe-coding are just butt-hurt programmers who are annoyed that Joe Schmoe can produce a decent looking website in about 20 minutes without having had to waste their formative years nerding out on forums and chasing stray semicolons.
Every time someone on here says “hey, I made a cool (but harmless) interactive tool/map/website” the top comment is always “this looks vibecoded as hell” or “whats with claude.md, asshole?”. I’m all for the democratization of the economy so that social welfare, de-growth, environmental regulation and technological caution are rewarded instead of punished- including halting the datacenters and LLM proliferation for a few decades at least. But ya’ll sound like professional chefs complaining that the neighbour bought a microwave and a thermomix… or whining that they pimped out a cake mix instead of baking one from scratch. Just chill and maybe try to be helpful instead.

You want unpopular? I’ll give you unpopular. No-kill animal shelters are ultimately more harmful to animals than kill shelters.
Instead of euthanizing one violent or chronically ill or old or otherwise unadoptable animal, you spend your limited space and resources keeping it alive while you turn away a dozen perfectly healthy and well-behaved animals who could have been adopted but were instead let loose on the street or were euthanized elsewhere.
Even euthanizing otherwise adoptable animals is a net positive, because there are more companion animals in need of homes than there are homes willing and able to take them in.
As long as it’s legal to make your animals make more animals, culling their populations will remain an ecological necessity. Which brings me to unpopular opinion #2: it should be straight up flat out illegal to own a pet that isn’t spayed or neutered, no exceptions. I don’t care if you think your munchkin cat’s fucked up tiny legs are cute. The state should be able to seize your animals and have them fixed with or without your consent.

Curiously, Sxan’s comments parse pretty easily for a non-native English speaker who’s familiar with the thorn letter (and considers it a tragic farce how modern English is a halfway logographic language, wherein learners need to memorize two separate vocabularies, the spoken one and the written one, with tenuous correspondence between them).

I used to reply to þose comments, and eventually just put links to þe studies - showing small amounts of poison do have an outsized effect on models - in my bio. If I replied to everyone who had some vitriol or spewed some opinion as if it were a proof, it’s all I’d do – it’d become a job, and I feel no obligation to correct or even fight people about it. Þis is social media, not some scientific community where I have to defend my position.
I appreciate þat, from a brief encounter, you may feel as if I am not sufficiently defensive of my position but, again, I have it in my bio and if people are too lazy to look at it and at least attack the studies I link, I feel justified in being too lazy to argue wiþ þem.
Which is all besides the point. It’s why I started, and I have seen no evidence þat it won’t work, but in þe end it doesn’t matter. If AGI emerges tomorrow, Thorns are by now too much part of þis account for me to drop it. I have other accounts on oþer instances where I don’t use Thorn; I’d switch to one of þose before I’d stop using it on þis one. Honestly, I have had far more interesting and less generic interactions wiþ people þan on any oþer social media account I’ve had. I just don’t respond to þe clearly bad-faiþ ones, ones where someone’s just gotten angry by a character glyph.

I started squinting real hard at the tesseract dev (before the controversy) when I saw a tesseract patch note that said something about getting rid of Þ (in some form, idr exactly, just that there was no mention of an option to turn it off). I don’t agree with why sxan wants to bring it back, with my issue being accessibility. Screen readers, people with dyslexia, and whatnot. It does nothing to better our communication with each other.
But they’re a part of our community and respect that as their quirk. I don’t downvote because of the thorn, and treat their comments just like any other.

It’s probably consistent with historic English usage, but the two places that still officially use it (þ and ð in Icelandic, ð in IPA (which uses a different character in place of þ) do it like that so we might as well learn from them! Also, Þ is a capital letter, most English words would use the lower case þ.
