- Comment on Dwarf Fortress' creator says the industry's in shambles over AI and layoff-happy CEOs: 'Everyone I know, their bosses are slowly getting psychosis' 1 week ago:
Well, “AI” in games was always behavior, rather than having anything to do with AI.
And even then, artificial stupidity is usually more accurate than AI. FPS bots could easily headshot you immediately on sight but like, what good is that. It’s literally more work to make them worse at the game.
- Comment on German joke 1 week ago:
Two camels are sitting in the basement and are splitting [like e.g. with an axe] petroleum. One says to the other “Hey, it’s Christmas tomorrow!”. The other one answers" I know, I came here on my bike."
I did my best with that translation, but there are subtle hints that these things relate to each other, that would take way more words in English.
E.g. the “eh” implies something along the lines of “It doesn’t matter because I already made the decision to come on my bike anyway”.
So I guess the joke is a bit that it’s the framework of a cohesive conversation, but it goes by so fast (3 quick sentences) that you kinda only realize that it was nonsense when it’s already over. It has dad joke vibes, too, only German jokes are more about unexpected content than puns.
Compare also (again doing my best on translation) “A ball rolls around the corner and tips over”
Or the “poem” (cause it rhymes in german): It was dark, the moon shone bright, When a car drove lightning fast Slooowly around the corner. Inside people sat while standing, Silently engrossed in conversation While a rabbit who was shot dead Was ice skating on the sandbank.
- Comment on Following accusations, James Pond Legacy devs say no generative AI was used in creating artwork 2 weeks ago:
Nah the word process ain’t weird there. Render process is the name of the activity that has been done there, and you wouldn’t say “redraw process” or “paint over process”.
I mean, I look a three second step and be like nah that’s AI, I ain’t risking it - just talking about the word process specifically.
I’d honestly expect them to make 4 AI images and then set up this up together the normal way, instead of trying to get the prompts right for one image with 4 different styles at once. Then again, I don’t assume to know enough to be sure about that.

A dystopian horror where they keep him (barely) alive while he’s suffering immensely because they need him as figurehead, in order to continue their fascism. Yes it would be poetic justice for him, but it’s not gonna make anybody else’s life better.

Yeah in also confused why they think it was a generic script - the story as a whole wasn’t lifted from any of the games AFAIK, but it followed along definitly-RE plot points.
Plus it was cool to see those things in real instead of not PS1/PS2 graphics, but ok that’s not about the story.

It’s fun to enjoy the horny from afar, without any commitment to the rest of the life. But for your own life it’s important to realize that even if you have A LOT of sex, >80% of your daily life will be NOT having sex - and that all kinds of people have sex and can be really kinky even… they just don’t sit down and write about it.

- Comment on Box3D | A revolutionary new physics engine developed by Erin Catto in collaboration with a Valve dev 2 months ago:
Difficult to say, but I see points against this being a silver bullet of any sort.
A competitive game like starcraft wouldn’t be responsive enough if they transferred all unit data every tick. So they use a lockstep model, where only player commands are transferred, and they are relying on a deterministic system (not just physics) playing out the same on all connected machines.
However, a guideline for software companies is generally don’t reinvent the wheel, but “the secret sauce” should be your own. I imagine for competitive online games, the code that makes the network interaction crisp is part of the secret sauce. Such games, StarCraft, MMORPGs etc, also tend to have simpler game-relevant physics. Colliders so characters don’t clip through each other, some simple raycasting and instant collision checks for area effects, usually.
The angle a pebble flies away from an explosion is usually not made game-relevant even in single player games - so it’s not because they can’t, it’s because it doesn’t mesh with the game.
It might open up faster online play for some indie games, but I don’t know if it will have an impact otherwise.

Uh, well, I’m anti patriarchy.
Shouldn’t take my own word that I’m not an asshole of course.
However, I’m very much “live and let live”, which is exactly why I’m against patriarchy trying to tell me I can’t exfoliate, respect my female coworkers, etc.
The first thing someone says when meeting someone new usually isn’t "I’m [pro-/anti-] patriarchy. But every single woman I met where it came up was anti patriarchy. I haven’t met A SINGLE ONE who was for it, and honestly it would be weird.
Extrapolating here, but I don’t think all women are judgemental jerks who used their ‘feminism’ as an excuse to be a total asshole over petty bullshit about other people’s choices. They just wanna live, man
- Comment on Anon's lil bro goes through his first break up 2 months ago:
Some women are for the patriarchy.
Sometimes, an “Are you gay” from a woman even is a “why are you not fucking me”; be it subconsciously, or a conscious flirty challenge.
Sometimes, it’s a “My man would never do anything like that and other man shouldn’t make him look bad in comparison”. Although I guess that’s the patriarchy thing again. Just like red pill podcast pickmes.
Of course all doesn’t matter, you could be the most effeminate man in the world - as long as you’re attracted to women, there’s no question.
- Comment on Anon's lil bro goes through his first break up 2 months ago:
Because that’s seen as less manly.
Which is kinda the opposite of ironic, because obviously, manly things are things men like.
Imagine a man’s reaction to a breakup would be to get into things women like, like exfoliating, trimming your eyebrows, etc. People would probably be like “He’s so much better without her”.

The idea would be more like a reserve wheel in a car; not to call the manufacturer to deliver you a reserve wheel only when you get into an accident.
And the second misunderstanding that makes it seem difficult is that you have to make every game run without a server. If the community can run a server, that’s all that’s needed.

- Comment on How would an anarchist society work? 5 months ago:
I think that’s a slight pun.
The “-archy” part comes from the greek for “to rule/command”. Monarchy = rule by a king, oligarchy = rule by few, etc.
And the “an-” part means “not” or “without”. So anarchy technically means “not ruled” or “without rule” - but if things are still being ruled, it would still be an “archy”, not a “not archy”.

- Comment on Epic boss Tim Sweeney thinks stores like Steam should stop labelling games as being made with AI: 'It makes no sense,' he says, because 'AI will be involved in nearly all future production 9 months ago:
He’s right IMHO.
You can make hundreds of AI slop games in the time you can make one game that is a creative work of art.
It would be waaay easier to police 100 games with a “No AI” label, than making sure 10000 slop games have a “Made by AI” label.
Maybe you think something like “but the ratio SHOULD be the other way around”, but to that you honestly have to deal with the answer “should could woulda”.
