Americans are afraid of each other
Theyâre afraid of someone knocking on the door
Theyâre afraid their boss will fire them and they will lose their health insurance
Theyâre afraid of other countries
I spend a lot of time in the US, and Iâve never seen anywhere with people constantly on edge. Theyâre so used to it that they donât notice any more
Iâve never seen anywhere so ruled by fear

stupid people
Unfortunately, thatâs the majority of Americans.
Katana314@lemmy.world âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
When looking at the social anxiety epidemic across America, very much affecting young people, Iâm sorry to say this is not true.
People think theyâre unique in not wanting to pick up a phone to order a meal from a restaurant, but itâs everyone now. SO many people want to minimize social contact to an extreme degree. Itâs part of why political opposition to rampant oppression is so lack luster.

Hanta has been a thing in chile since the 90s, I donât know what the fuss is about.
Aedis@lemmy.world âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Yup. Thereâs also deaths from hantavirus every year in California. The problem is the variant, its the first time a lot of these countries are being exposed to the more contagious than usual form of hantavirus that in Chile & Argentina is known as Andean Hantavirus.
Chile has a long history of dealing with this and usually takes all the necessary precautions, but add some dumbass gringos (north americans and Europeans) into the mix and they basically go into a remote area and snort lines of mouse shit and then are surprised when they caught a really bad virus.
Argentina doesnât really take any precautioms afaik.
A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
yes, in chile they always do campaigns, is a fact of life since forever, so for me itâs quite surprising the global craze about it.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
different species, variant implies its the same species but different genotype. hantaa virus of korea is a different species than sin nombre of the midwest, and andes virus. the first 2 are quite virulent.

KatherinaReichelt@feddit.org âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Isnât it obvious? There is no vaccine. Weâve seen human-to-human transmission even with short contacts like a flight. Itâs able to kill people. And we know that at least in the USA the government will not do anything to protect the people.
fizzle@quokk.au âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Yeah, the irony of this kind of meme saying âI will not live in fearâ and yet they quite obviously are living every day in fear of conspiracies. Anyone who has read a few sentences of commentary is aware that Hantavirus is not going to be a pandemic.

tooks@lemmy.world âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
COVID played a major part in my motherâs death, so I feel comfortable saying I welcome the hentavirus to our country. If all goes poorly, maybe it will take care of some of our more troublesome septuagenarians. đ€
Tiral@lemmy.world âš2â© âšweeksâ© ago
Oh yeah, I donât want to see people die BUT the human population has reached a point where survival of the fittest isnât a thing, so how we have complete morons all over.
Case in point. A plastic bag from a grocery store has âDo not or on headâ printed on it. Hereâs the problem 1. If youâre a small child that legitimately doesnât know better, you canât read, this is zero help. 2. If you can read it, youâre old enough to understand not to do it in the first place, and youâre a dip shit.
Just take the warning labels off obvious shit and let nature fix things. Itâs that big of a deal to wear a mask at a minimum? Sure.
Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works âš2â© âšweeksâ© ago
At least with the bag, itâs a reminder to tired parents not to let the child put the bag on its head, to tell the child about the danger, and not to leave the child alone with the bag because theyâll test it. If they leave the child alone with the bag and a cat, the child will learn
23 lessons: fur helps prevent plastic bag suffocation, and claws/teeth can penetrate both the bag and human skin. Also cats prefer to choose whether and where to be enclosed.

Ironically all the data shows that hantavirus isnât a big deal because it doesnât spread person to person unless itâs the Andes strain. The stuff we see right now is sensationalist headlines for clicks and views. As long as you stay away from rodents you wonât get it.
BananaChips@lemmy.zip âš2â© âšweeksâ© ago
The strain from the cruise ship is the Andes strain.
Avoiding rodents isnât the answer to this one (still avoid them, thatâs just not quite the correct answer here).
The risk to the average person is low for other reasons.
One difference is in the very fact that we can name the virus: we know more about how it spreads and the symptoms to look for. Itâs not an unknown virus, unit in 2020 when we were dealing with something we had never seen in humans before.
If someone does start to show symptoms it will be tested for earlier during diagnosis than it otherwise might be since hantavirus is in the news. Earlier detection will reduce spread (if we even reach that point, many of the passengers are in quarantine).
The other passengers being in quarantine is one of the biggest things lowering the risk.

This was said by a British politician about the UK, but it feels a lot like it applies to the US too:
DamienGramatacus@lemmy.world âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Wasnât that said to minimise the authority of experts rather than as a statement on the public? Specifically, Gove was trying to pass policies that the so called âexpertsâ were saying wouldnât work so he tried to spin the narrative by saying politicians shouldnât listen to experts and people should do what theyâre told.
Lyrl@lemmy.dbzer0.com âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
It seems to be a common social phenomenon, something about how our human brains are wired. People have expert knowledge - burn the witches! Chinaâs Great Leap Forward, the Cambodian genocide under Khmer Rouge, and on and on. I hate that we as a society havenât figured out how to avoid this yet.
