I spend a lot of time in the US, and I’ve never seen anywhere with people constantly on edge. They’re so used to it that they don’t notice any more
I’ve never seen anywhere so ruled by fear

They are afraid of people in public transit.
Their fear of others also drives them to get bigger and bigger cars, causing them to become even more detached from anyone who is not already close to them.
