Eeh. Basically every videogame movie is produced the same way: take an unrelated generic script, slap the game branding on it, ship it out.

See: Doom, Borderlands, Resident Evil, Street Fighter (Rip. Raul Julia), the super mario bros, Monster Hunter, Tekken, Prince of Persia, BloodRayne…

The first hitman movie was at least… like, kinda fun? Bad movie but we stan an ace king.

    • Dookieman12@piefed.social ⁨5⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Half of those movies were directed by the same person, Uwe Boll.

Careful now, don’t talk shit about him or he’ll challenge you to a fight (unless he thinks he might lose)

I honestly enjoyed Super Mario Bros. Sure it only had like 10% in common with the games but seeing Toad being turned into a Goomba was hilarious. Street Fighter was also pretty great just for Raul Julia’s bombastic acting alone. Seeing these creative liberties being taken can be infuriating at first but after the dust settles they can still be fun to watch if only to see how much of a trainwreck they can be.

Fuck anything by Uwe Boll though. He was an asshole and his movies were always painful to watch.

Super Mario Bros is a high budget B-movie and it’s pretty charming for that. I enjoyed much of it, but I also kept reflexively punching the friend who made me watch rhe damn thing. It’s a bad movie, but bad movies can be fun. Plus, “Monkey!” is perhaps the greatest line ever penned.

It might have been that the Mario movie was made by Illumination so I had almost no expectations going in but I did really enjoy it way more than I was expecting.

It’s kinda weird how that company is definitely capable of producing a good movie and they’ve demonstrated that a few times but they kinda just choose not to

Let’s not kid ourselves most games have a pretty generic story.

      source
      • Rolive@discuss.tchncs.de ⁨3⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Definitely true, it highly depends on the genre though. You can’t expect a good story from an FPS game but they do exist. With RPGs it’s part of the experience.

        source
    • Makeitstop@lemmy.world ⁨5⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Street Fighter wasn’t just a generic script, it was a GI Joe script for a live action adaptation that hadn’t gone through. I wanna say they only got the Street Fighter license in order to salvage the project.

Apparently the Mario Bros Movie actually had a good script that was much closer to source material, only for the directors to throw it out because they don’t do fantasy, only cyberpunk.

Prince of Persia was at least partially written by Jordan Mechner, the creator of the series. Three other writers also got writing credits as well, but my understanding is that Mechner was involved throughout the process. Which is crazy because of just how bad it is compared to the Sands of Time.

Similarly, Wing Commander was written and directed by Chris Roberts, which makes me wonder how he could get so much wrong. Though in retrospect, I’m kind of surprised it came out at all.

      source
      • RaphaelSchmitz@feddit.org ⁨20⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Yeah in also confused why they think it was a generic script - the story as a whole wasn’t lifted from any of the games AFAIK, but it followed along definitly-RE plot points.

Plus it was cool to see those things in real instead of not PS1/PS2 graphics, but ok that’s not about the story.

Seconded that Hitman 2007 was a good movie.

      source
      • Warl0k3@lemmy.world ⁨5⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

I wouldn’t pehaps go so far as to say it was good but it was certainly enjoyable and they paid enough attention to the source material that they got a ton of the little details right.

Wait monster hunter the game series or monster hunter international the book series? the books focus on private contracting companies hunting vampires and what not for the government while trying to keep the public from knowing monsters are real, one of my favourite book series so I hope it’s the latter

ANY project that involves buying a license for an IP to make it is a lie. It is not the same thing as the original. It is, at best, as much like the original as a clone. It might look like it’s related but it’s purely a marketing gimmick to milk your nostalgia for every dollar they can slurp out.

Fuck nostalgia. The past was shit. You just forgot how shit it was.

    source
    • KoboldOfArtifice@ttrpg.network ⁨4⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

The notion does feel a little cynical. It’s not like this is necessarily always the case and, even if such projects will fundamentally always be an attempt at making money in the hands of large studios, they can be well executed regardless.

It’s an example of the other way around, but as someone who frankly was immune to the notion of nostalgia from it, I recently watched the first Alien movie for the first time and played Alien Isolation afterwards. That was an amazing example of a game that really represented the ambience, notion and feel of the originals without being a carbon copy of it (even if they did rely overmuch on parallels in some parts and the general structure is surely more than inspired).

Though I suppose I must also give the point that I can’t think of an example of the game to movie pipeline that ended well. I’m sure someone will be able to share some positive experience there.

The first season of The Last of Us was spectacular. I haven’t played the second game or watched the second season, so I can’t comment on that, but the first season was very true to the game in most ways, and where it wasn’t was still really, really good.

It was also made by Neil Druckmann, who was also the writer for the game.

      source
      • sunsofold@lemmy.zip ⁨4⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

made by Neil Druckmann, who was also the writer for the game.

That’s an important key. He didn’t buy the rights to someone else’s work. He basically did a revision of his own work, with all the intimate knowledge of character, narrative, etc. that implies.
The Last of Us as a game was also basically a playable movie as it was. Someone actually made it into a kind of movie by capturing game recordings long before it ever was made as a live action series. That means he didn’t have to revise it very far.

I mean you can’t really expect modern audiences to understand the color blue, so of course it’s just a reasonable reinterpretation into a different medium to make blue red like audiences are more accustomed to.

Ironically a great Fallout adaptation whose only sin is Bethesda gleefully shitting over all the West Coast canon out of jealousy.

Meanwhile the protagonist is a plucky Midwesterner and literally no one would have cared if they did the same thing to the Midwest canon.

The one video game movie that springs to my mind that is like the video game is Mortal Kombat. Right around then in the early 90’s, the movie industry didn’t even try to understand the games they were movieing, but they did. Compare that to, say, Super Mario Bros.
