Useless censorship has become a shibboleth for social media brain rot. People do it to mark themselves as current on social media trends. That’s all it is. There’s no evidence that it has anything to do with content strikes.

Far more likely scenario
Uber can now tell when you’re drunk, and don’t have a car and will charge you more because you’re desperate.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this comes from Uber drivers getting tired of being assaulted and having their vehicles trashed by drunk people.
It’s not all of them, but it’s likely enough of them to ruin it for everyone.
unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 5 days ago
Once had some drunk guys shove a girl in my cab and give me enough cash to get her home. She puked in the back seat. And I had to get her dad to get her out of the cab and her tiny little brother was upset. You get this kinda service from an uber?
HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 days ago
Cab drivers get a bad rap, but y’all gotta deal with all kinds of shit. Respect for y’all.
I wish the industry coped better with Uber and lyfts when they were first growing.

Probably lawsuits, or the growing threat of lawsuits.
MurphysPaw@sh.itjust.works 5 days ago
Isn’t that the point of the rating system? Drivers can give you a low rating and you can essentially be black listed if it’s low enough.
vivalapivo@lemmy.today 4 days ago
What? Uber had algorithms to determine whether the person is drunk or not and surge the price for them back when I was working for them in 2019
selokichtli@lemmy.ml 3 days ago
TBF the OP is not dated. Nevertheless, how does it work? Once they surge the price, one drunk guy will probably just accept it, mindlessly, while a more sober foe will probably tap FUCK NO, and try again. Maybe that’s the algorithm, the good old capitalist pig algorithm.
vivalapivo@lemmy.today 2 days ago
In the region I am talking about all major taxi apps are doing this. Except one but it has a basically nonexistent reputation.

My husband and I used Uber for one of the first times to get back home after a long walk, where we were both inebriated. It was pretty clear and we weren’t trying to hide it, but we weren’t rude, and I was careful not to slam the door or anything. The driver gave us a 1-star rating and it took a long time before I found a few drivers willing to chance it on me in the meantime. I don’t remember that driver but I hope I’ve cut them off in traffic since. You know what, I probably have.
CADmonkey@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Recovering Uber driver here.
I drove back in 2017-2018, and at that time Uber was starting to get difficult about reimbursing cleaning fees when some drunk puked in the car, which made fewer drivers want to pick up drunks. I can’t imagine the situation has improved since then.
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 4 days ago
So wait.
You get charged a cleaning fee if you puke in someones car… but uber wont give the cleaning fee to the driver, you know…the person who has to have their car cleaned?
StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 4 days ago
I unfortunately drove Uber for a bit back in the late 2010s until I got tired of being sexually harassed. Drivers do get paid the cleaning fee, but the rideshare services were becoming increasingly stringent about paying it. The issue was threefold.
People would soil vehicles then dispute the cleaning charges with their credit card, so Uber would be out whatever was paid to the driver. Last I knew, this was a maximum of $225, but capped at $80 if the driver did the cleaning. Good luck finding a professional cleaner that charges less than $225 for cleaning seats smeared with vomit or feces.
Next, drivers would fake vomit or feces and file a report, causing their prior passengers to be charged a cleaning fee.
Ultimately, the ride share services tightened up their methods for both charging and refunding these fees to the detriment of both drivers and riders because they’re soulless, capitalist pig fuckers that only care about profit.
CADmonkey@lemmy.world 3 days ago
That’s right! Isn’t that fun?
This and the fact that I started to make almost no money is why I don’t drive for Uber anymore.

Is there an actual source for this? I tried searching news for “Uber will know you’re drunk” and found nothing, I reverse look-upped the meme and saw it nowhere, there is no indication of a source in the meme.
I want to know how they will know that you’re drunk, and I want to know why they want to cut off what I assume is a decent chunk of their clientele, but I’m not seeing anything.
VelvetPinkOtter123@lemmy.world 4 days ago
I found articles from 6 years ago that says that uber drives have the choice to turn you down if they think you’re too drunk or obnoxious
I would have thought that was always the case, but maybe not.
So it reads to me that it’s not that Uber will be like, “he’s legally drunk, he can’t use our service”, it’s, “I went to pick this guy up and he was vomiting and his pants were falling down so I decided to turn him down”
It should be noted I did not actually click these links and read the articles or anything, that’s just how it appeared. So, take it with a grain of salt. I might have read the articles except I don’t drink so I don’t really care
whereitsat@lemmy.zip 4 days ago
by this point most people in america probably don’t remember taxi cabs. they would often be dirty and driven by a disheveled wildman. these drivers answered to no one other than their dispatcher who gave just as little of a fuck.
do you have a problem with the driver? did he smell bad, did he talk too much, did he blast a master P song at full volume for the entire ride despite your objections?
tough shit.
uber was built in response to this. it was not only based on these occasional bad experiences, but to ensure that every working class person was on their best behavior when in the presence of their betters.
ivanafterall@lemmy.world 5 days ago
Drivers are currently making like $12-$14/hr, so…yup. And Uber will just deny my cleaning fee when someone vomits, soooo…yup. Not accepting that shit in my car and paying out of pocket to clean it after midnight, having to drag an unconscious stranger out of my car, etc.
altphoto@lemmy.today 3 days ago
Google… What if we detected a person was drunk and then alerted the authorities! And then push notifications for Uber in case the drunk wants to pay us a cut for detecting them drunk and giving him a ride… Or an attorney in case they accidentally drive home or do other things while drunk. Or for telehealth therapy! Or for more drinks! Or maybe they wanna chase it with a good burger nearby! Hey! This drink worked! Do you want to buy the bottle online from Amazon? What other activities are others having while drunk! How about a hotel room nearby and or a person to wakeup with tomorrow? Maybe you might want to marry tonight and divorce tomorrow morning?
The possibilities are endless!

The point of Uber is to make money. As long as businesses can make money by kicking you in the face, they will do it.

Uber drivers can give you a rating as a passenger. At one point in my life, my score wasn’t great because I’d get plastered and be obnoxious in the car on the ride to my hotel or home.

fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 days ago
Sounds like a you problem. I dont live in a place where they run 24/7 but they run long enough at night on holidays. Also, if you are partying until 2am don’t be a weak sauce, party until 6 and then next day transit starts.
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 5 days ago
assuming you have a public transit system that operates at night, and is worth a damn.
I know there are places where buses stop running long before the bars close.
abbiistabbii@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 days ago
Okay, maybe you should lobby your local government for better public transport? Because let’s be honest with you, you can’t have a healthy nightlife without public transport at night.
If the patrons of bars and clubs only have the option to drive to your location and drive back, they’re either not going to drink as much as they would, not going to visit as often because they’re going to have to drop stacks on a cab, or they’re going to drink and drive.
You can’t have a healthy nightlife without public transport at night. The only places that I can think of if I can get away with having no public transport and having some form of nightlife are wee villages, because you can walk home.
If you want a healthy nightlife, invest in public transport. If you don’t want to invest in public transport, prepare to spend your nights drinking alone in your house.

1984@lemmy.today 4 days ago
Lol. People say take the bus, but who the hell wants to be on a bus with drunk people?
Public transport is the worst environment ever already, even before the drunks. It’s a choice only when we can’t drive for some reason.
abbiistabbii@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 days ago
This is the most American takeaway I have heard. It’s not my fault your country doesn’t invest in public transport, resulting in dead cities with no third places, endless traffic, no walkability and it seems, from you, rampant snobbish classism.
Also you going home from a bar, a place that is famously full of drunk people, complaining about drunk people on the bus while you’re coming home from the place where all those drunk people are coming from is a bit like complaining about fursuiters on the bus while you’re coming home from a fursuit convention.
Also drunk people on the bus is 100% better than the alternatives, that is drunk people driving or zero bars in your city because their customers can’t come home after drinking without dropping a stack just to get home.
Where I come from we invested in public transport, and when I say we invest in public transport, I mean we invest in public transport. Everyone takes the bus here, regardless of who they are, because It’s the easiest way to get into town and back because the alternative is unviable and inconvenient, especially if you are going out on the pish. We have rich office workers on the bus alongside poor gig workers. And the nightbuses are used by both pishheads and night workers to get home or to work or wherever, and it’s not too bad, not anymore annoying than pishheads at the bars at least.
America doesn’t invest in public transport because they want to force you to drive, they don’t want to give you the choice, they keep public transport either non-existent or useless, so you don’t have a choice but to drop thousands of dollars every year just to leave your house. This has resulted in a situation where most American cities look like Glorified motorway junctions dotted with unwalkable housing estates and strip malls. No, that is not because the city was founded in 1950 when people started buying cars, most American cities were founded much older than that and had public transport systems, but got rid of them to force people to drive, literally demolishing the entire city to turn it into a collection of strip malls and steroids.
You want a healthy nightlife, invest in public transport and nightbuses. Don’t want to invest in that, have fun with drunk drivers, expensive taxis, no nightlife, and drinking alone in your house because you can’t fucking leave your house without a car.
kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 4 days ago

This is something I’m to European to understand.
Not my fault your country disinvested in public transport to force your to drive, killing off third spaces for the enrichment of car companies.
