so, why do we say ‘thank for your service’ and then turn around and see the thief as less than human?

john berger opened my eyes to this.
in ways of seeing he lays out a convincing argument that the entire history of european oil painting was just annoying and lame rich people commissioning artists to paint their possessions and property. the ‘masters’ were exceptions to this rule and often painted these great works later in life.
when you see it that way and draw parallels between modern instagram, you both realize how fucking annoying and stupid and pathetic wealthy people are but that nothing has changed other than the setting.

you learn to think from books, but film and TV exercises that thinking. in film you’ll find symbolism and metaphor and meaning, intentional or not.
being able to extract that is intelligence, not raw facts. americans love to boast about how educated they are and about the virtues of education, but why are there millions of users of goodreads and letterboxd and few can write a coherent paragraph about a book they read or a film they watched?
it’s because of this type of braindead thinking–it’s all about imagination!!! imagination is great, but it’s about thinking about things differently.
