Growing up in Russia, my main exposure to 9/11 lore was that Tolkien’s “Two Towers” (and yes, I know that in fact LOTR is six volumes, not three, and three volumes are publisher’s decision to group them that stuck) in older adaptations was translated as, well, “two towers”, but in newer ones as “two fortresses”.
Because there was a lot of fashion to imitate being somehow connected to cultural and other events in the USA, that’s also how older Russian TV propaganda focused on “terrorists” concerning Chechnya, basically doubling in tone news about USA in this or that about Iraq and so on.
It also successfully managed to show the ruling party as modern and western enough, and its opponents as a bunch of some mad old people from another age, bandits, neo-Nazis and out-of-this-world communists. Well, in the specific period of 2000-2007.
Which is also interesting in the sense of popular memory - it might seem weird that the general population in Russia really doesn’t want anything from that emigrated opposition, well, because that’s the exact kind of people who were the face of that government in 2000-2007, as a countermeasure to people like Starovoitova (already killed by then, just trying to explain the cultural image) and Sakharov or even Novodvorskaya.
And said general population is of all kinds of opinions and levels of education, and some of those layers and groups might even agree with those murders, but those were politicians and journalists, and these are whores. Whores are not a very respected kind of people.
I mean, that peace-loving bunch of fairies mostly consists of people who supported “pacifying” of Chechnya in the 00s. I understand they don’t think that was a crime, well I do, so they can get fucked.
That’s why the emigrant Russian opposition is not very popular in Russia. Well, after 2022 some more important things have happened on scale.

My wife’s ~15 years older than me, and while it generally doesn’t matter more than making restaurant servers that check ID do a double take, there are times where her pulling me up past a stage of my life has resulted in me lacking some skills people normally build up during that time.

You can take a ps2 off Ebay, and with some pretty easy computering and a hard drive you can have a PS2 with hundreds of games built in. Downloading a terabyte of games is the longest part.

PS2…Pffft. I had a PlayStation. The indestructible grey box from the before times. I played Final Fantasy VII, Driver, Silent Hill, Tekken 3, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and Grand Theft Auto. Unless the power was out, you could pop in a disc, read the booklet, and play to your heart’s content. Hell, if we are going to be talking old, how about playing Jeep Command or Pac-Man on the Commodore 64? I need to go back in my dusty coffin and have a nap. AND GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

My PS1 lasted for 10 years of heavy use, but it still wasn’t indestructible. That’s a term I reserve only for the Atari 2600. I dug mine (I actually own two) out of the ashes of my house that burnt down. Only the atari, a few carts (2600 and NES) and my doc martens survived that fire. Its hilarious that they still work.

Played Tekken 3 with my friend and his brother on their PS.
Then we also played SW : RotS on our PS2.
The PS2 is still around somewhere, but its CD drive sensor is bad, so it doesn’t detect when it’s closed. And thus doesn’t read discs. That was long ago. I need to find it, I think I’m grown up enough to fix one sensor or find a replacement drive.
I suppose the old game CDs all have scratches too bad to play, so some tinkering is expected to make it work.
And while there was an officially supported Linux version for it, of what I’ve read about it, it wasn’t of much use even then and was an advertising move (if so, worked on my dad, I remember him mentioning that back then).

For some reason I found a USB to ethernet network adaptor on my floor in my dorm room (no idea how it got there, just noticed it under the bed one day) at university and tried it with the PS2 I played using a TV in card for my PC and it just worked. Played some online Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 with it.
Contrast to today, where my PS5 supports Bluetooth but when I paired it with my Bluetooth headset, it didn’t recognize it and I’m sure that was deliberate to get people to buy Sony’s (or partners) headsets. Which is one of the reasons I probably won’t ever bother with a console again (though Sony has been generous and has provided me with plenty of reasons to not bother).

I remember staying up all night long with a group of friends of mine. We took turns driving by Target where one guy worked and he knew they were getting a shipment of PS2s in.
We formed battle plans based on who wanted the PS2 the most , down to me, who would buy one if there were enough, but didn’t overly care if I had to wait a few months to get one. Since I cared less, and am over 6ft I was dubbed crowd control. The guy that worked there drew the floorplan and showed us where the display was going. Our caffeine fueled plans had us developing different formations and routes to ensure as many PS2s for the group as possible and delay other people as long as possible. And contingency plans if a different customer took an alternate route around the crowd to get there first.
Once we saw the line starting to form at around 2am we all drove down and got in line and camped out till 6am when the store opened.
Our plans were dashed, but held in reserve just in case things went south when we learned the store manager was a levelheaded individual. He passed out numbers for each of us based on our position in line.
I was #12.
The line never got longer than the number of PS2s they had in stock, so our plans were doubly dashed as there was absolutly zero confrontation.
It was a fun fantasy for a while though. These were the same kids that had baseball bats and ski masks at the ready when Y2K happened. They patrolled the town at midnight looking for signs that everything crashed and were going to join in if they saw anyone looting. They wouldn’t start the looting, but were ready with a wishlist from various stores. Best Buy was high in their priorities.
That also never happened. But boy were they ready.

I had some friends that worked at a major retailer. When the first shipment of PS2s arrived, a few somehow ended up in a dumpster. They were taken in from the cold and found loving homes.

I was there, 3000 years ago when PlayStation was first born. When we rewired the circuits to play CD’s we burned as tribute to ensure our 1MB memory cards would not fall to corruption.

Seeing how old a youtube video is makes me feel older than this. Like I see 16y on a YouTube video I was watching literally 16 years ago and I feel old from that.
This though, it throws me into a nostalgia loop of man I do miss plying ps1 games on the ps2, spending time with my brother, buying accessories for it like the memory cards and the controllers with extra vibration or the ones with the fans in the handles. Man those were good times. Playing dbz budokai 2 and soul caliber 2. Awww man the THPS games were fuckin’ suck on that. The Matt Hoffman bike games!!!

Do people actually toss away their stuff the moment an add for the next generation rolls out?
I grow up with a lot of technology much older that me because people still had it. Typically, a elderly house would have older stuff than people the age of my parent. I had new toys and stuffs from the last generation and plenty of older hand me down from older siblings and oncles.
It blows my mind to see some young people so uneducated about the very recent past. You didn’t live this time but the majority of the society in which you take part did. How could this be so exotic to you?

That’s just the way it is now. Humans used to go generations with minimal change. In this alien existence we’ve created things change drastically in just a decade or two. That said a lot of things still never change like human behavior or motivations. There’s still a lot of wisdom about life someone can gather and pass down as they see fit. As they say, the more things change the more they stay the same.

Was recently talking to a working student at $DAYJOB about LLMs and wanted to make the point that the pay-per-use model shows they’re still a relatively new/immature technology. So, I likened them to mobile phone calls, which would generally cost you per minute in the early 2000s.
