- Comment on What does DLSS do, and what's up with DLSS 5? 1 week ago:
Good explanation. For a bit more context:
AFAIK DLSS was the first “AI technology” to hit the gaming market when NVIDIA revealed it a few GPU generations back. Unsure if it came with the RTX 2000 series or later but somewhere along those lines. DLSS consisted of 2 major technologies, upscaling and frame generation.
Upscaling uses an AI model to take a lower resolution image (frame) and upscale it to a higher resolution, this cutting the required performance to rendering the frame to begin with. This improves framerate at the cost of bluriness in fast moving scenens and some ghosting artrefacts. This has been improved across the different DLSS versions but the issue still remains, although way less notable.
Frame generation on the other hand generates “fake” frames in between naturally generated frames to improve framerate and produce a more fluid experience. As the model Leeds extra time to produce this extra frame it also leads to some latency being added resulting in input delay, which is not ideal for fast-paced competitive games.
Both of these technologies affects the visuals of the game somewhat but still retains the original artists vision. Although it does influence the visual quality and bringa some side effects such as smearing, ghosting and artefacts.
The new DLSS 5 debacle is a fresh can of worms. While previous DLSS versions have focused on retaining the original image and only improving performance this version now heavily influences the content of whatever is being rendered. The AI now alters the lighting, textures, geometry, etc in the frame and applies the most glorious of AI slop you could imagine, removing any sense of artistic direction and atmosphere from the game.
NVIDIA is attempting to damage control the situation by claiming that developers have full control over what is being touched by the AI model and what isnt. But the reality remains that this does influence the scene content with unpredictable AI generated content, thus simply removing artistic ability and feeling from games.
But we do not need to worry, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang himself has told us that “we are wrong” and that this is simply amazing so as every good citizen under a capitalist technocratic ogligarchy i believe we should just sit bow down and praise DLSS 5 as the godly diety it is. /s

I can agree with this. The environment is definitely affecting OP in someway, i see the same in their way of writing. I dont think its an unnatural response to this mess theyre living in but i agree they should note this and not make it a habit everywhere else. I can see how it would be very hard to see what is a “normal” level of cleanliness/nastyness if this is how you constantly see your surroundings.

Yeah, same here. Sounded germophobic but with the context of the pictures it makes way more sense. In a generally clean and tidy house these things would not be that big of a deal but in this case i think its fair for OP to be disturbed by it. Im not a overly clean person, our apartment gets pretty messy sometimes but never to that degree or to a point where it looks that messy, especially not for prolonged periods of time.

ublock Origin or AdNauseam is the cute to your ailment. Speaking of quality of life improvements any degoogled or privacy oriented browser is also an improvement. Personally I use Zen browser, not as hardened as other browsers but good enough for me and has nice features and design aswell :)

Iirc HDDs are also going bonkers, what would my WD 20TB disk go for?

Honestly, a bit fucked up your dad takes control over who you date and spend time with. But as the others said, you can atleast go there for a free meal and hopefully make a new friend. I do understand the weird pressure this would put on you though. I hope all goes well, and dont feel pressure to pursue a relationship if youre not feeling it. Your dad cant be the deciding factor in that
- Comment on When will we have reached enough productivity? 8 months ago:
This is what I find fascinating about capitalism. It builds on the premise of increasing profit by increasing efficiency and quantity. With that mindset we should strive to improve efficiency until no one needs to work and everything is automated and autonomous, no? That would be the peak of efficiency? But then how would people Pat for the products being produced? They cant, it needs to be free, since no one has a salary because theyre not working. But then the CEOs wouldnt make money. So theres no incentive unless your goal is not monetary but to improve the ultimate wellbeing of humanity. Its inherently a flawed concept since the main incentive is monetary, yet we refuse to accept what must be the ultimate goal to be able to keep power above others.
And yes, i know this is very simplified. But still explain to me why we do mass layoffs in favor of AI slop if the incentive is not entirely monetary and for the sake efficiency and or cutting costs. Explain how and who will sirvive the further we go along? Capitalism at its core makes the rich the survivors. There wont be infinite recursions of 10x productivity revolutions because the workers will die off in the process.

No, completely understand that ofcourse. But Nintendo fans prove time and time again they are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome by talking down the people who’ve had enough of Nintendos bs and lovingly run back to purchase the next overpriced and underperforming console.
Dont get me wrong, i completely understand why non-tech people dont want to put up with it and that we techies are a minority. What baffles me is the undending devotion the Nintendo fans have for their abuser.

This. Still dont understand how people actively let Nintendo piss in their face and shit in their mouth for nothing but enjoyment. Nintendo fans just give off an immense aura of “briandead coonsomer” to me. Literally just emulate it. Same game, better performance and cheaper, wheres the downsides?

I played Minecraft with my gf before but she didn’t really enjoy it. The only game I’ve seen her play a lot of is Civ 6.
This time on Minecraft I started a server with some friends and she’s having a blast. She made a cute little house and she has built a “girl-cave” where she and her friend shares cake. It’s so wholesome.
