Most people found out about the blocklists existence when shit has already hit the fan, and Rimu got to stand his ground. In this sense, it was the same rude awakening.
I can only speak for myself, but no, I knew about it when I signed up. You’ll notice that most of the fediverse is talking about Tesseract, not piefed. That’s because most people that look into the piefed thing, largely go “Eh, not actually that big a deal.”

Thankfully, this isn’t at all what is happening. This is where you’re being disingenuous. You either grossly misunderstanding, or maliciously misrepresenting what is actually happening, and what that block list represents. It is a prefilled set of defaults. Nothing more.

The same one they’ve always had, the single greatest thing about the fediverse is and always has been: There is always another instance. There are several spin offs of piefed, kbin, lemmy, and you can even use things like Mastodon if you like. You do not need to use piefed. No one is forcing you. You have choice.

It’s only hostile if you happen to want content that is in the default block list, which, again, is open and available. So understand that the following statement is directed at people that want the specific content from the list as it stands today, allowed on their instances, en masse. A) fuck you. B) I’m perfectly happy being hostile to those types. See A).

On the contrary, I am on piefed.social, so I am subject to it now. I find it makes for a much more pleasant fediverse experience. If I am ever negatively affected, by trying to post to something on the block list: First off, it’s pretty obvious why my content is being blocked, unlike tesseract, and if I REALLY disagree with it, I would have several options for recourse. Again, the list is open source. Find something on there that shouldn’t be? Open a ticket and make a case. Doesn’t go your way, and you truely believe you’re being censored? Like I said, there is always another instance.

NOTHING on that list makes the world a better place. NOBODY is being shut up by Rimu. As for the other stuff, yes, obviously that aligns with me, otherwise I wouldn’t still be on piefed. The thing is, you are not owed a say in how his software is developed. How he runs his instance, and what he decides to include in the software that runs that instance, is really up to him. He has graciously put the sourcecode up so you can make your own copy where YOUR word is law, but you are trying to villify him for putting up a fence around his home, because you feel some kind of way about not being allowed to piss on his lawn.
I feel like we’re not really getting anywhere here, so I’m going to suggest we agree to disagree. I don’t think there’s anything on that list that doesn’t deserve to be there, and I don’t think it’s in any way being forced on anyone. I think it’s a largely benign, and helpful preset to make setting up a nice instance a little bit less onerous. You very clearly disagree. That’s your right. Godspeed

That doesn’t matter. It’s still not the same thing, and it is NOT Rimu forcing his political views on unsuspecting users on the fediverse. You are ignoring the target of the two lists.
Tesseract: Targets unsuspecting users. List is hidden. It’s applied blindly to every user of every instance, in secret, and is truely not disableable. It was designed to be secret, which is why it presented as a network error, and was so heavily obfuscated.
Piefed: Targets instance admins. List is open source. Is applied ONCE when the instance is set up, and is EASILY disabled. I’m sorry but if your admin cannot run a simple SQL command
DELETE FROM domain, then they have no business managing a public facing instance. The same goes for them not checking the default values that are configured by set up scripts, which is ultimately all this is.When you pick an instance, you are accepting that instance’s political leanings whether you like it or not. Even if your admin decides nothing is taboo, everything is unblocked, go ham: 1st - that’s free speech absolutism, which is a political stance, 2nd - enjoy your cesspit. It should be part of your research when choosing an instance, as this is the point that you are opting-in
I chose piefed.social knowing that Rimu and I are largely politically aligned, and did so because I was tired of the shit that my old instance was allowing. You’re making it sound like he’s quietly silencing voices he doesn’t like, when in reality, all he’s doing is giving instance admins a jumping off point to cut out the worst of the extremism and propaganda from both ends of the political spectrum. I’ll say it again for the people in the back. There is nothing underhanded in what Rimu is doing, it is NOT AT ALL comparable to the Tesseract situation, and suggesting that it is, is disingenuous.

For anyone else reading, it’s not the same thing at all. There’s no subterfuge in what Rimu is doing. There’s a fucking admin interface to manage the list for a start, and the list itself is open source and categorized by reason for blocking
Suggesting that this is in any way the same thing as a secret hidden block list that contains specific users and has no way to be disabled is disingenuous at a minimum, but I’d go further and say it’s outright bullshit.

Only Uncharted 4 is available on PC, none of the PS3 era games are available, sadly. I haven’t tried on the most recent version of the emulator, but:
Uncharted 1: I’ve completed, it’s basically flawless Uncharted 2: I got right to the final level, but the demon hallucination things crash the game Uncharted 3: I’ve completed, but it crashed a LOT, and there are several janky spots with crazy slow downs etc. like the ship graveyard. It’s also a bit annoying to get running in the first place. The recommended settings are actually required in my experience. Doesn’t work without them.
I love me some Uncharted! Emulator is going to be the best way to play them soon. It’s already superior imo because I was able to set up gyro aim

It’s not going to result in lower prices for consumers. It’s going to result in higher prices on Steam.
It’s also going to fragment the game market on PC. That may or may not be a good thing depending on who you ask, but personally, I like not having to hunt around for the best store to purchase my game in. I go to Steam and I know I’m not getting completely shafted. This is essentially going to allow scummy corps like Ubisoft and EA to implement a “Steam tax” because I don’t want to use their shitty, bloated, spyware riddled miserable excuse for a storefront.

My dad used to be a police officer in South Africa. He had several interesting artifacts from his time there.
One such artifact was an unmarked black cylinder with a spray nozzle. One day after school, I had managed to get locked out of one section of the house and could only get into the kitchen and my dad’s office. (Houses in SA often have security gates inside locking off sections of the house.)
It was sitting in this office, waiting for someone else to get home and let me in that I absent mindedly started playing with this cylinder. I sprayed a small bit out. It made made a really cool heat haze effect in the air. Awesome, but what the fuck was this stuff? Well I’d just had a highschool science lesson on how to test an unknown gas… you waft it towards yourself, you do not sniff it directly. So I sprayed out a bit more and wafted it carefully towards my face…
Instant regret. My nose felt like I’d just done a netti pot of hot sauce. Eyes streaming, snot dripping.
Lesson 1 learned. Don’t play with random cylinders of mysterious chemicals.
I found out later that it was tear gas.

That’s correct! My dumb ass ran straight for the kitchen tap. Lesson 2. DO NOT USE WATER to clean off tear gas. I will say that I knew IMMEDIATELY that I had fucked up a second time. Felt like my entire face was on fire. Baaaad times!

Yes, imho, these should be legalized too. People are gonna use them anyway, just like recreational drugs, and there isn’t a drug on earth that isn’t made safer when it’s users can get pure, known quantities of their substance of choice. It also frees up researches to study the shit that people are absolutely going to put in there bodies anyway. Real science is better than bro science.
to be clear, I’m not saying all sports should now allow performance enhancers, but I think a class for enhanced participants would be hella interesting. Assuming it was backed by legit science and done relatively safely

I have a friend who works for Transpower (company in charge of NZ electric grid) and occasionally goes into their control rooms. Apparently they have set ups like this. It gets worse, because there are several computers hooked up to the different monitors, so not only do they have a wall of monitors, they have a bunch of different keyboards and mice (mouses?) that they have to hunt through if they want to actually interact with something

It wasn’t bad! It was novel, and it was sold as a paired beer for just about every burger in an annual burger competition in Wellington one year. Unfortunately that meant everyone that participated in the competition got real sick of it though lol

Sure! I’m far from an expert, but this is my understanding of how it would work for age verification:
There are 3 parties in this scenario. The Estonian state, Meta, and a 3rd party (which is currently a real 3rd party, but work is being done to allow this to be a digital wallet on your device, that you control)
The state issues your 3rd party a magic cryptographic cert that has all your personal data like dob
Meta issue an age challenge: Not “what’s your dob” but rather “Are you old enough to use this service?”
3rd party show you exactly what Meta are requesting and give you the option to approve or deny the request
If you approve, the 3rd party generate a new cert that JUST says “Yes I’m of age” and nothing else.
Because it’s been generated from the states magic cert it can be verified with their public key.
Meta don’t get more info than they need, the state can’t see that you’ve logged into Meta, but you’ve successfully proved you’re old enough to use the service.
The current weak point is that the 3rd party can absolutely see all of it, but there’s no reason the 3rd party has to be an external service. It could absolutely be an app on your device.
You still need to prove yourself to the state, but you’d have to do that to get an id card in the first place. It’s WAAAAY better than trusting all the different porn sites and social media services individually to not leak or misuse your data

So yes, given the state of the everything in the US right now, yes, do this.
But please know, the problem with age verification is VERY much in the implementation. It IS possible to do age verification without having to identify yourself to Meta/PornHub/Whoever. It IS possible to maintain privacy, AND restrict things like porn and social media to those who are of age. Look at how the Estonian system works, it’s brilliant. The problem isn’t age verification, it’s the blatant data grab that is currently trying to destroy your online anonymity…
Having said that, for fuck sake don’t let the current people in charge do this! It will be a fucking Big Brother style surveillance nightmare.
