The self importance of this guy to think that something needs to be saved from itself, and he’s the one to do it. I’ve only seen this sort of behaviour from religious types.

Blocking and defederation exists, but this guy thinks he knows better than anyone and thinks it’s justifiable to lie about it.

    Anyway; closing comments:

Nothing of value has been lost. I’ll never remember this guy’s name, and only this situation as a joke.

That reads exactly like this absurd video message from a power trippin reddit mod after he was removed for promoting a scam.

It’s just as completely out of touch with reality that you almost have to feel sorry for guys like that, because it’s obviously pathological.

On the other hand, though, these people are a threat to others—for freedom of expression and open discourse, the cornerstones of the Fediverse.

Over the course of the last several days, have receiveda constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing over DM, Matrix, Github, and Codeberg. All of it instigated and eggged on by another instance’s top admin. This is unacceptable for all of the reasons in the world,

I mean, Jesus Christ. I have no choice but to agree with this first part of the manifesto. The people who did those things should be ashamed of themselves.

Just stop using Tesseract. That’s all you needed to do. Just stop using it.

Death threats? Over an open source fediverse frontend? Pathetic. Assuming it’s true, of course. Shame!

    source
  • apftwb@lemmy.world ⁨36⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

Everyone knows a cornerstone principle of the Fediverse was that there should be secret ban lists baked inside of the website frontend that aligns to a single maintainer’s ideology.

    source
    • Quokka@quokk.au ⁨4⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

The Fediverse isn’t about empowering users and local communities it’s about saviours making sure us savages get what’s best for us.

    • meco03211@lemmy.world ⁨20⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

As long as that maintainer is me. I can’t trust anyone else to do it. But all you lemmings need to just blindly accept my ruling. Trust me bro.

I find it unbelievable that he claimed to have handled himself with dignity and grace. It’s as if he’s incapable of acknowledging or addressing his wrongdoing. This behavior is almost sociopathic.

    • dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world ⁨24⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

“Dignity and grace” apparently also meant going around defending his actions in the third person and insulting other people en masse using one of his alternate accounts.

If he was upfront with adding a block list, like a little message that pops up, and giving the user the option to opt out, then this would’ve been a non-issue. I can see some people wanting a curated block list to not have politic, rage subs, etc., but doing it in a hidden way will always leave a bad taste in my mouth.

  • SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨hour⁩ ago

I read this earlier, some notes:

They’re upset that people they thought would agree with this course of action “turned on them.” There’s clearly zero self reflection.

Everyone else, though, enjoy your toxic, xenophobic, knee-jerk-to-violence, purity-testing, and harassing-anyone-who-doesn’t-fall-in-line cess pit. One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn’t toe the line and you’ll be right where I am.

This idiot is whining about a self-inflicted wound, literally nobody gave a shit about what they said it’s what they did.

Also note that they keep digging deeper into “I have to have the last word so I have to remove any and all ways for people to reply to me. I won, I know I did. They’re just all out to get me.” Just really pathetic conspiratorial thinking to justify the fact that they did something fucking idiotic and people to them to task for it.

Not one person would give a shit if they bitched about it on Lemmy, but “taking matters into their own hands” (as in the original post said “somebody had to!” because they had to don’t you see? what a fucking lummox.) and not being open in an OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY.

This idiot is whining about a self-inflicted wound, literally nobody gave a shit about what they said it’s what they did.

Exactly. It’s Lemmy. I’ve had unpopular takes, I’ve had shit takes and hot takes… I take them all in stride. Let the downvotes hit, it’s fine.

What I didn’t do is go “ohyea you don’t agree with me? I’ll show you!!” and then try to censor their voices by using whatever power I had.

      source
    • Triumph@fedia.io ⁨1⁩ ⁨hour⁩ ago

Huh. I say whatever I think I should. Most of the time it's fine, people like it. Sometimes nobody cares. Sometimes people think I'm wrong.

    • aizakku@sh.itjust.works ⁨1⁩ ⁨hour⁩ ago

Taking things into one hands while trying to steer many communities with a heavy fist (blacklisting without admin’s knowledge) seems like very sociopathic behaviour. Hopefully he’s just a kid and will grow out of the childish behaviour what appears to boil down that we need him and he doesn’t need us? I don’t think he deserves death threats but AdmiralPatrivcks behaviour demonstrates reason #3221 why we need decentralization like the fediverse.

There are sociopathic individuals littered throughout society and corpos act socio if not more psychopathic while chasing the almighty dollar. When things happen in the corporate socials, they are driven by a topdown without the users even knowing what’s happening. This event has shown me that Lemmy can and will find those individuals that try to game the system can and will be held accountable. This is good news if you value autonomy and critical thoughts.

  • Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com ⁨23⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

Lol imagine being such an egotistical prick that you write an entire multipage manifesto just to rage quit a tiny social network. No one gives a shit about your position on the matter, Patrick. It certainly lacks the depth or complexity required to necessitate that many words.

    source
  • Wren@lemmy.today ⁨1⁩ ⁨hour⁩ ago

He pushed a shadowban list into his code, complained that everyone didn’t like it (comments locked,) complained that no one liked his explanation (comments locked,) then ragequit because it’s all a big conspiracy against him.

It’s sad to see someone who seems to want to do the right thing this bad fall victim to some kind of savior complex where they completely fail to empathize with the people they want to save.

Leaving is the best course of action for him. I hope he has a chance to reflect on all this, since self reflection was clearly not a priority for him.

Anyone who appoints themselves as the sole authority of on what is moral and good is a bad person. That is straight up fascist thinking. There’s no wanting to the right thing here. This is one person’s ego driving them to think they knew better than everyone else, and that kind of thinking should not be not be given any grace.

I can’t say I agree. He did think he knew what was good for everyone but I think it truly was “right” in his mind. It’s a bizarre and dishonest thing to do, but I think he thought it was justified. He probably won’t self reflect but leaving here will make it more likely.

        I give most people grace.

Keeping myself above water, mentally, is a daily routine. I done some stupid, weird shit for the wrong reasons and have been very close to other people who’ve done the same. The worst part about mental health problems like ours is the inability to see the whole picture when you’re inside it.

Maybe he’s an asshole, maybe he’s going through shit, maybe both. I know for sure that whatever I believe has absolutely no bearing on this situation and everything to do with my own mindset, so I condemn the actions and choose grace.

Please don’t be weird about it

    source
    • TrickDacy@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨hour⁩ ago

Yeah that’s my take on it. It was a very weird thing to do on many levels. Especially doing it with the secret API call. The guy didn’t understand the fediverse and wanted to mold it arbitrarily. Even if he had gone about it non-secretly it was very doomed to failure for a lot of reasons, but doing it secretly was making sure it would fail even harder. The whole idea of this platform is that you can block any number of instances/people/communities but trying to secretly do that on other people’s behalf was never going to end well.

Having said all that, there is quite a bit of toxicity here that goes unchecked. But his idiotic way of dealing with it was never the right move.

Other instances do this, he’s not the only one. There is a github program that you can use. Also, cloudflare (cloudfare?) probably does a bit of that too.

Instances choosing to implement their own blocks for their instance is different than a front end developer sneaking a block list in an obscure way that impacts multiple instances.

    source
    • RustyShackleford@piefed.social ⁨46⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

He has an inability to take responsibility for his decisions when caught trying to control others, so he talks down to everyone else.

His remark about disassociating, is a major characteristic of all dissociative phenomena involving a detachment from reality, which we are seeing above. He’s hinting that he’s still subconsciously aware of his mistake and is simply furious that he slipped up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually decides to return.

    It’s too bad but

No one is talking about the Piefed vote quotas anymore, so you’re welcome.

More than once I brought this up as comparison on the difference between an unpopular default based on the main developer’s needs, that was announced and detailed in changelogs, that can be toggled and worked around, instead of a control-freak’s grudges manifesting as a hidden shadowban list. We lost a very friendly power user (PugJesus) from the Piefed change, but unfortunately sometimes that is the price of it.

Wanting a less-toxic fediverse is a totally normal thing, users and admins have many of the tools already for that, and I respect devs for trying to do their part. But it is the dishonest way of implementing it that no one is a fan of, and that makes everyone question this dev’s character. If this person could at the very least own up to it, call it well-intentioned error, and respond to the problem with solutions rather than a crashout, then this wouldn’t need to be as big of a deal.

    harassing-anyone-who-doesn’t-fall-in-line

Lemmy is bandwagony but in politics you have to live with a little bit of it. I’ve said anti- and pro-feminist stuff, made anti- and pro-trans arguments while trying to be empathetic as I can, made cold, warm and hot takes, toed the line and went against the grain, got lots of up and down votes. I try to pushback against gatekeeping and purity tests, play devil’s advocate, and when I’m not shitposting, try to steelman arguments I don’t agree with. People are imperfect, I try to avoid to assign guilt by association, people will think differently about things than I do, I respect their opinions while still disagree with, and I’ll take downvotes on the chin for defending different that.

Over the course of the last several days, I have received a constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing

If you actually got death threats and threats of doxxing, that truly sucks and shame on people who took this that seriously.

Even people around here I’d interacted with positively for years and had grown to respect because they seemed level headed and above the immature and sociopathic bullshit that dominates this platform showed their true selves.

Or maybe you were just wrong, dude.

Like you developed a frontend. If you just blocked people from your instance we wouldn’t have batted an eye. Your job as a frontend developer was to choose how information was packaged. You should not have been deciding for users who they would or would not be allowed to see. And if you really felt strongly about the need for a blacklist, you should have made your filters opt-in.

Then you have entire instances whose admins call for the death of others, harass other users

Yeah it’s crazy how liberals call for the deaths of billions around the world by supporting the status quo, which kills countless people and is currently dooming almost all life on Earth to climate disaster. That’s why I’m on Anarchist Nexus, whose admins and users (me lol) have called for the killing to stop by any means necessary. (Pretty sure Admiral Patrick is referring to us specifically as the instance-that-will-not-be-named.)

I know that liberalism is the monoculture in the West, but you must eventually learn that (1) liberalism is not the default mode of existence, and (2) liberalism is violence. Liberal democracy is violence. It’s probably the most violent system currently in existence. And I don’t know how to make that an easy lesson for you to learn, but if you’re unwilling to do the work to undo your liberalism, the rest of the world does not have the time to wait for you.

One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn’t toe the line and you’ll be right where I am.

Good, if I ever become as libbed up as you then I deserve to get banned.

You crazies won and proved me wrong. The fediverse isn’t worth saving after all.

    Bye

Hell yeah we’re fucking crazy, and I wouldn’t want it any other way ancom-heart
