Yeah as I was reading this screed all I kept thinking was “what the fuck website is this guy reading” because I’m on here every day and I don’t see anything that looks like what this guy is describing. I don’t scream or yell or fight or issue death threats to anybody, I read thoughtful shit and I ignore thoughtless shit and I live my life.
This has to be some kind of mental illness. If you find someone truly offensive, and I haven’t really - how about… you know, block them? This is quite sad tbh. While it was a pretty bad idea to quietly bake in a blacklist with no configuration options, no one should be harassed and getting death threats over this! This whole rant is quite stupid too, I hope the tesseract dev calms down.
Also: purposefully DDOSing a server as some kind of petty revenge is just disgraceful.
Obligatory mention for devs, make sure you still spent time outside of your projects. Don’t force yourself to work on stuff and end up neglecting irl stuff like the tesseract dev did!
While it’s good to empathize with people receiving death threats, I would caution against it when the person claiming death threats is not doing so in good faith. That entire statement is directly followed up by implying that db0 is systematically sending people death threats, which is a massive accusation without providing any evidence for that. Which sadly means, acknowledging the threats means implicitly accepting that premise. It’s a loaded question, and a common tactic by cornered scumbags to silence criticism.

On the point of the Tessaract dev AdmiralPatrick accusing db0 of death threats … they might be confusing this with the April drama we had this year on Lemmy, see this comment and post which summarizes things.
Basically, an admin on anarchist nexus (AN) changed their name to “Murder all Zionists” which MrKaplan, a lemmy world (LW) admin, understood as a death threat and caused LW to defederate AN without discussing this issue with other LW admins or announcing the defederation. Db0 seems to have some kind of alliance with AN and sided with them, hence I guess AdmiralPatrick interpreted this as db0 siding with death threats lol

Like the other commenter said: while being emphatic as a default mindset is generally good, there comes a point where you need to look at the body of evidence.
Yes, nobody should be getting death threats. But - much like the supposed “toxicity” of some subs he blocked such as the apparently horrible WholesomeYuri - there comes a point where he is required to show some receipts. Because several of his accusers do have them.

That’s actually really sad. Not because I agree with him, but because it’s always sad to see this sort of falling down. Like imagine, a parallel timeline where this person’s parents hadn’t abused them, and they hadn’t had been bullied or whatever, or had faced repercussions for poor behavior, or had gotten the help they needed years ago. Right? Like if something hadn’t gone wrong, they wouldn’t have ended up like this.
Knowing that all the magas, Nazis, real tankies (the ones that REALLY want to just slaughter anybody that disagrees, iron fist style), all the bullies and buttholes out there, and all the other messed up of us, who fall down into evil or extreme burnout… Knowing this happens at all, is still sad, to me.
I’m American and think you know who needs to be you know what’ed. But even then, knowing that he grew up in such a disgusting environment, ruining him, not ever really allowing his upper brain functions to fully come to, and the past-but-then-future path for him that was inevitable of bad behavior and responses from society that would drive him to be exactly like this… Knowing that shit happens to humans, in our species, theoretically within our control, is sad. And seeing obvious predictions and fears come to pass in real-time is never fun.
With the admiral patrick guy, it’s pathetic and gross and shitty and honestly good riddance, but still the human part of me is like, that confusion and frustration he’s obviously avoiding and coping with ego and trying to fill the sadness with “you are all sociopaths harassing me and at least I tried to stand my ground”… Like he obviously doesn’t quite understand, and honestly, truly, neither do we. Will he get worse? Probably. Will he directly hurt somebody? I hope not. Will he likely fall in with a worse crowd? Happens ALL the time.
So I beg of everybody here, to stop, and consider what went wrong for this guy. Put yourself in his shoes, I know that’s too big an ask for most people - but that’s kind of my point, and the problem here. He fucked up, he based it on fucking up, and somewhat kept fucking up even after he left (a ddos script? Really?). But pain only begets more pain. Really try to figure out what went wrong, what the points in time were where he REALLY could have been recovered by any of us or somebody in real life. You aren’t going to get the right answer. A lot of us are going to get the wrong answer. But just try to incorporate empathy into your life going forwards, because there’s a lot of bullshit and horror and hate and pain happening in the world today, and we are all trying to do what we think is best and most efficient to do the right thing. And we need to, at least, learn from this event and be better.
As someone who was abused and didn’t grow up into a pile of shit, it’s really hard for me to agree with this.

I think that a person gets a little sympathy for their bad childhood when they show a willingness to be better than that, not before.

Yeah, it displays a serious lack of self reflection. I was on a bad track as a teenager/young adult, hating the world and being a real dick about it. Eventually I realized that feeling so pissed off and lonely all the time actually sucks and I should work on myself to try and improve that situation and have a more positive impact on people’s lives. It took some time and a lot of effort but it worked out okay and I’m widely considered to be a fairly likeable person now.
This person and people like them clearly haven’t made the effort to be better and don’t deserve our patience until they’ve done something to improve. It’s sad that circumstances have led them to be where they are and we should do what we can to prevent others from ending up there but it’s not our responsibility to accept abuse from damaged people.
Plenty of us survived rough childhoods and now deal with cptsd, got bullied, the whole jazz, and somehow managed not to become insufferable assholes. They could have done that too but chose not to.
This probably makes me sound like a conservative… but their inability to make more pro-social choices makes me think they’re fucking weak and insufferable. Like I feel like Smithers glowering down at them, saying “Pathetic.”

Over the course of the last several days, I have received a constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing over DM, Matrix, Github, and Codeberg.
It’s also sad the reaction of loud minority of crazy people that will send stuff like that. No one should receive death threats.
We all make mistakes.

As a former administrator of a top 100 sub, I’ve seen the absolute unhinged mod power tripping. My a large margin, mods were at least an equal threat to a community as the bad actors in the community.
For this reason, I’ve been a major proponent of a model where groups of users can generate and curate thier OWN collaboratively maintained ban lists, and users can with full visibility OPT IN to different filters.
As well, I think being able to “opt in” to users to see mod removed comments, or “opt out” of a mods comment removals would be cool. I think removed comments remain in the modlog and could be re-injected into what users see given appropriate “opt in” configuration.
Having a decentralized mechanism to manage and opt in to such lists would provide a way to combat power tripping at a grassroots level, as well as allowing broad filtering to let people choose thier experience.
This is all entirely predicated on it being:
A) with full auditable transparency
B) a clear opt-in mechanic
Hard disagreements between curators can easily be handled by forking the lists.
Long story short, I really like the idea of managed content suppression (and ideally un-supression) lists curated by regular users available in an opt-in manner because they act as a counterbalance mechanic to the outsized power that mods hold an INEVITABLY abuse.
But it’s so fucking far from ethical to try and just sneak one in. I genuinely can not understand how much contempt for the agency of other human beings one must have to be able to rationalize such a thing.
I want to thank you for reminding me that not all .world mods are shitlords, that some have integrity and ethics.

The block list implementation was not because he couldn’t be bothered. It was done in a relatively obfuscated matter. Nothing in the read me even mentions it. This was very clearly a God complex or politically biased goal that he knew would have an effect since he was in a position of power, as everyone uses his front end.
