Man he’s still actively crashing out and referred to his other account in 3rd person a few hours ago.

It is fuckin hilarious watching his meltdown over this.

otter@lemmy.ca 1 hour ago
Why though, this strengthens his argument about the harassment
Unless the alt is being used to evade bans, or trying to steer the conversation, I don’t see the benefit in chasing around the dev on different accounts. Report it to mods/admins as needed, but don’t share it in this thread where a lot of people are already upset at the person
Gullible@sh.itjust.works 2 hours ago
If this had been done out in the open, they might have been able to get a solid number of users to agree to use their filter. The secretiveness is the only thing I take issue with, personally.
deegeese@sopuli.xyz 1 hour ago
Sharing your block list is fine.
Tricking others into using it is incredibly sleazy.
SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 hours ago
Same, everyone is allowed to have opinions. When you decide to silently, secretly dictate your opinion to others that’s a problem.
Embargo@lemmy.zip 2 hours ago
“…and while won’t give you the personal satisfaction of having won…”
I gotta say though… I’m pretty satisfied.
Rentlar@lemmy.ca 2 hours ago
It’s too bad but
No one is talking about the Piefed vote quotas anymore, so you’re welcome.
More than once I brought this up as comparison on the difference between an unpopular default based on the main developer’s needs, that was announced and detailed in changelogs, that can be toggled and worked around, instead of a control-freak’s grudges manifesting as a hidden shadowban list. We lost a very friendly power user (PugJesus) from the Piefed change, but unfortunately sometimes that is the price of it.
Wanting a less-toxic fediverse is a totally normal thing, users and admins have many of the tools already for that, and I respect devs for trying to do their part. But it is the dishonest way of implementing it that no one is a fan of, and that makes everyone question this dev’s character. If this person could at the very least own up to it, call it well-intentioned error, and respond to the problem with solutions rather than a crashout, then this wouldn’t need to be as big of a deal.
harassing-anyone-who-doesn’t-fall-in-line
Lemmy is bandwagony but in politics you have to live with a little bit of it. I’ve said anti- and pro-feminist stuff, made anti- and pro-trans arguments while trying to be empathetic as I can, made cold, warm and hot takes, toed the line and went against the grain, got lots of up and down votes. I try to pushback against gatekeeping and purity tests, play devil’s advocate, and when I’m not shitposting, try to steelman arguments I don’t agree with. People are imperfect, I try to avoid to assign guilt by association, people will think differently about things than I do, I respect their opinions while still disagree with, and I’ll take downvotes on the chin for defending different that.

Man, I just post good photography and advocate for billionaires and fascists to resign from life.
I’m just a turtle.
Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 hours ago
They thought they were “saving” the fediverse by making it better for normies which is hilarious. It’s almost like they never saw the internet before 2010.

The children on the internet these days have no clue. Eternal September is 30+ years old.
dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
There are plenty of users who don’t even know what the Eternal September was, and I guarantee you there will be a multitude of them whose first exposure to the term will be your comment, right here.
Some of us were there.
SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
thank you for that tidbit of early internet trivia. I enjoyed looking up and reading about “Eternal September”.

Seeing someone using such a blacklist makes it rather clear who the crazy in this story is.
SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
it’s not even just using a blacklist. That’s fine. But deciding that your blacklist should apply to everyone. That’s the crazy part. Then forcing that blacklist on everyone and hiding it? That’s the evil part.
PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus 2 hours ago
Over the course of the last several days, I have received a constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing
If you actually got death threats and threats of doxxing, that truly sucks and shame on people who took this that seriously.
Even people around here I’d interacted with positively for years and had grown to respect because they seemed level headed and above the immature and sociopathic bullshit that dominates this platform showed their true selves.
Or maybe you were just wrong, dude.
Like you developed a frontend. If you just blocked people from your instance we wouldn’t have batted an eye. Your job as a frontend developer was to choose how information was packaged. You should not have been deciding for users who they would or would not be allowed to see. And if you really felt strongly about the need for a blacklist, you should have made your filters opt-in.
Then you have entire instances whose admins call for the death of others, harass other users
Yeah it’s crazy how liberals call for the deaths of billions around the world by supporting the status quo, which kills countless people and is currently dooming almost all life on Earth to climate disaster. That’s why I’m on Anarchist Nexus, whose admins and users (me lol) have called for the killing to stop by any means necessary. (Pretty sure Admiral Patrick is referring to us specifically as the instance-that-will-not-be-named.)
I know that liberalism is the monoculture in the West, but you must eventually learn that (1) liberalism is not the default mode of existence, and (2) liberalism is violence. Liberal democracy is violence. It’s probably the most violent system currently in existence. And I don’t know how to make that an easy lesson for you to learn, but if you’re unwilling to do the work to undo your liberalism, the rest of the world does not have the time to wait for you.
One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn’t toe the line and you’ll be right where I am.
Good, if I ever become as libbed up as you then I deserve to get banned.
You crazies won and proved me wrong. The fediverse isn’t worth saving after all.
Bye
Hell yeah we’re fucking crazy, and I wouldn’t want it any other way ancom-heart

some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
The fuck is this drama even about? Is everyone involved like 13 years old?
Grimy@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Well you are involved.
Admiral Patrick, dev of tesseract and admin of Startrek.website, made a shadowban list and slipped it into his front end. Instead of using modding tools like an adult, he decided to block people and communities through his app, which he was distributing and sharing with users and other instances (it’s a front end you can add for your instance website). The list was hidden and only loaded from his website at the start, it caused a bug for db0 and they traced it back.
The list was of course at his sole discretion and involves personal vendettas, leftist comms, LGBTQ comms, small news comms and a mixed bag of random ones.
The list also includes you. So a bunch of users weren’t seeing any of your posts or comments show up, and were never informed or given a choice about it.
SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Well, you are involved. The list also includes you
some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Oh, sweet. Thanks for the breakdown. Cool that I made his list I guess? Or is this like an Epstein list and most are actually horrible people? Do I need to grow at all as a person, is what I’m asking.
breezeblock@lemmy.ca 2 hours ago
The list also includes you.
I’m dying of laughter.
I’m also very sad I wasn’t included.
Kowowow@lemmy.ca 2 hours ago
Huh guess I’m not active enough to have made the list
lime@feddit.nu 2 hours ago
they built a lemmy frontend that silently fetches a list of people and communities the creator doesn’t like from a server and just… erases them from the ui. people were upset that there was basically a hit list for them compiled for no apparent reason, and when pressed about why he thought anyone would think this was a good idea the dev just left.
WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 2 hours ago
Patrick hates people like Luigi and secretly has been shadowbanning people, communities, etc who celebrate celebrate actions such as Luigi’s. People realized it was happening and got mad they weren’t on the list.
db2@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Now you insulted him, he won’t save you anymore!
curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 1 hour ago
Dev of a Lemmy frontend made a block list, as well as a triple super secret download at runtime (base64 encoded then decoded at run).
db0, admin of dbzer0, noticed the original block list and forked as well as posted about what was found. Others found the super secret download.
ptz (aka… A whole bunch of alts, someone else can list) got mad about people finding out then claimed it was a harassment campaign because… db0 found the dirty list.
Followed by a whole bunch of posts and then this “final” crashout.
victorz@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
Over the course of the last several days, have receiveda constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing over DM, Matrix, Github, and Codeberg. All of it instigated and eggged on by another instance’s top admin. This is unacceptable for all of the reasons in the world,
I mean, Jesus Christ. I have no choice but to agree with this first part of the manifesto. The people who did those things should be ashamed of themselves.
Just stop using Tesseract. That’s all you needed to do. Just stop using it.
Death threats? Over an open source fediverse frontend? Pathetic. Assuming it’s true, of course. Shame!
fizzle@quokk.au 1 hour ago
Complete lack of self awareness.
If you can’t act transparently then you’re probably the asshole.
Larry@piefed.social 2 hours ago
He could have started an instance and moderated it as he saw fit but no, he wanted to underhandedly silence hundreds and thought people would thank him for it.
He also could have just blocked people, communities, and instances he didn’t like on his own account..
WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 2 hours ago
Could even share a blocklist as its own thing for people who wanted to outsource that job to someone else.
Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 1 hour ago
He did have an instance didnt he? Dubvee.org

The blocklist was crazy but I don’t think anyone should be receiving death threats, that part is frustrating.

The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. Look, I don’t always agree with dbzer0 and the flotilla. I think they’re a bunch of purity testing wangrods sometimes, and they were even taking time out of their day to libel Piefed for no reason during the original Tesseract callout.
But I don’t believe that these “death threats” are a serious problem, seriously connected to db0. I think this death threat thing is made up. It’s awful convenient how if you’re being boycotted or ridiculed for your beliefs and values, you can just make a post about some death threats and get sympathy. And it ain’t DARVO when you got no history of abusing the other person before calling out their politics.
istdaslol@feddit.org 2 hours ago
It’s something weird that if someone does something wrong on the internet it seems everyone else gets a free pass to harass them. Just have him have them have their little crash out in peace. I know their past days weren’t fun and now just to keep clowning on them doesn’t make one better than them.
SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Who’s harassing? He put out this message for people to read… well, people are reading it and they have some criticisms. That’s not harassment, that’s getting feedback.
otter@lemmy.ca 1 hour ago
This bit:
Over the course of the last several days, I have received a constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing over DM, Matrix, Github, and Codeberg
I don’t know the extent of it, but I can definitely see this happening. Its not a fediverse thing, or a social media thing, some people take things too far.
XLE@piefed.social 2 hours ago
Can somebody explain who this person is and what they’re complaining about, because all I can gather is db0 is involved

DarkCloud@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Wait, wasn’t Tesseract a front end for mods to ignore problem users?
I’m on the list and I just assumed it was a “users who can be extra work to deal with”… type list.
But yeah, big reacts are never that great… And I can understand someone feeling targeted by online outrage.
justOnePersistentKbinPlease@fedia.io 1 hour ago
The problem is that he added a secret, undocumented list that was only added when you were running the program that only he maintained.
If you were on an affected server, it gave an incompatible server message. If you were an affected user, it just hid you completely.
He went to extreme lengths to try and avoid this being discovered.
He seriously compromised the fundamental nature and trust of the entire activitypub project sphere.
DarkCloud@lemmy.world 51 minutes ago
Wow, what a cunt. Glad he rage quit.
SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
nope, it was frontend for anyone/everyone.
If you were on the list then anyone using it never saw your posts. You were basically shadowbanned without knowing you were banned.
DarkCloud@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Ahh I see. Thanks.
Looks like it was pitched as an option that had "better moderation tools* that might have just become reddit style hide lists.
DandomRude@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
That reads exactly like this absurd video message from a power trippin reddit mod after he was removed for promoting a scam.
It’s just as completely out of touch with reality that you almost have to feel sorry for guys like that, because it’s obviously pathological.
On the other hand, though, these people are a threat to others—for freedom of expression and open discourse, the cornerstones of the Fediverse.
