‘Wayne, I think we’ve established that “Ca-Caw Ca-Caw” and “Tookie Tookie” don’t work.’
Ah, I’m glad I was reminded that this movie exists.

d00phy@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Underrated movie IMO.

It’s not a movie, it’s an ad for Head&Shoulders.
Tehhund@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Dude, Where’s My Car? is so much better than it had any right to be. And while the main characters are stoners, most of the humor isn’t stoner humor.
corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
We got free tickets to DWmC after Shaft burned in a slow dialogue scene. So we saw this for free.
I’m reminded of the reviewer differences between this and The Emperor’s New Groove when I mention we still wanted a refund.

I’ve literally never heard a bad word uttered about Kung Fury.

Any movie where the protagonist is offing nazis is a great movie.
spirinolas@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Last Action Hero. I know the editing is pretty bad and the rhythm is a bit messed up in the last part but it’s the most meta movie ever and an homage/parody to classic action movies. Having Arnold play the main part is the cherry on top.
captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
True lies was a better executed tongue-in-cheek send up of the action movie genre, but Last Action Hero is a good and interesting movie.
SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
True Lies is a fantastic movie, doesn’t belong on this thread at all!

Rubber baby buggie bumpers!
PartyAt15thAndSummit@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Where I live, this is being aired on TV on Christmas every year, as a tradition.
agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Mystery Men is a phenomenal send up of the superhero genre. It’s simultaneously extremely 1999 and decades ahead of its time.
Bytemeister@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Honestly, Geoffrey Rush is just really good and being bad. I’ll watch any movie where he plays the villain.
Delphia@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I really want to meet super tallented actors like Geoffrey Rush and tell them they were amazing in the most artistically devoid thing they have done.

Rubber. An anthropomorphic car tire. If that doesn’t describe a masterclass in directing I don’t know what does.
otacon239@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I own this one! An homage to the no reason.
chocosoldier@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
Rubber is fucking brilliant!
moakley@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
It’s pretty rare that I haven’t heard of a movie, but this is only the second time I’ve heard of this movie, and the first time was on reddit yesterday. Was that you?
BotsRuinedEverything@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I definitely wasn’t commenting on Reddit yesterday lol. Refugee here.
I’m not going to call Rubber one of the best undiscovered indie flicks out there, but is IS an experience every movie fan should have. The storytelling is unlike any movie you’ve seen. The fact that you understand the emotional motivation of a friggin car tire is unreal.
Kaput@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The cable guy. Scary Jim Carey is scary. And the ending was visionary.
Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I feel this way about 23 as well. Jim Carey as a normal guy who’s absolutely losing it just hits different.
buddascrayon@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I blame the marketing for that movie not doing well. People went expecting a “wacky Jim Carrey flick” and what they got was a surreal and frightening thriller.
Eddie Murphy’s “Holy Man” suffers that bad marketing issue as well. They plastered so many ads making it out to be a loony Eddie Murphy film and the film is more of a drama about believing in one’s self and not seeking external validation, with a few gags in it making fun of television shopping networks and the stupid shit people buy from them cause yeah, it’s Eddie Murphy of course they’re gonna have fun with it. But that’s only like 1/3rd of the film.

The Last Starfighter is not a shitty movie. Now go to sleep, Louis, before I tell ma about your Playboys.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space needs no defending. It’s just a terrible great time.
Bytemeister@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Tremors 2 is peak cinema IMHO. I only wish they had spent a little more on the CGI, or replaced it all with practical effects.

Treasure Planet. There’s weird plot choices, but I loved the mixed animation, the music, the characters.
An actually bad but amazing movie would be Miami Connection. Karate rock band sings about friendship fights motorcycle drug ninjas. Fuck yeah bro.

Chronicles of Riddick. Not sure it’s considered a “bad” movie, but I definitely like it more than most. Just a crazy entertaining world and system they build in a short 2 hour long movie.

If you remember the 80s at all, then “Hot Tub Time Machine” is the greatest comedy ever created.

I unironically love Armageddon and The Core. Yes, they’re both stupid and unrealistic movies, but that works in their favor about as often as against. Something about the way they play with the core concepts makes me love them.
Apeman42@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I unironically enjoy the old 2005 Fantastic 4 movie. It was cheesy as fuck, I don’t deny that. But it was fun. And the comics themselves can be as bad or worse sometimes.
Also I like Julian McMahon.
Also also, Chris Evans towel scene.

Dredd (2012) is a near perfect 90’s style action movie made 15 years too late.
Karl Urban manages to do more acting with only his mouth and chin, and line delivery, than many other actors do with their whole face.
Olivia Thrilby is also very, very good, I do not understand why some other director has not cast her in an action oriented role since… now that Nintendo seems to actually allow their IP in films: Make her blonde again and she is Samus Aran.
JayDee@lemmy.sdf.org 3 weeks ago
Mine’s gotta be The Brothers’ Grimm staring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. It’s the same camp vibe as the Van Helsing movie starring Hugh Jackman, but there’s no badass super hero to save the day - there’s just a bunch of imperfect people trying their best, and it’s almost entirely by luck or destiny that they snatch victory from the clutches of defeat. It’s also one of the most morbid depictions of childish horror i’ve seen on-screen, where it gives no fucks about being realistic.

In the same vein:
Johnny Mnemonic is unironically pretty damn good.
The pacing gets clunky in some spots, production quality is a bit off in some sections… honestly not really worse than say Escape from New York… its honestly overall pretty damn good.
supernicepojo@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
This one deserves its own thread fr. Keanu Reeves worked his ass off to try and pull this together and it works in its cheesy way.

ssfckdt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
I can’t like that movie because it was so insulting for the culture at the time. Tacky and stupid. No self respecting 90s technology person respects that movie.
supernicepojo@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
