Aeonflux, except I don’t actually bother trying to defend it.

I put Ultraviolet next to this too. I’m not here for cohesive world building, I’m here for gratuitous sci-fi action perpetrated by a woman with a bad haircut.

Mirror’s Edge was if both of these movies merged into one and made something actually good.

I jest, but I’ve seen both and while they’re gorgeous, I basically ended up ignoring plot.

The film was better than the old MTV series it was based on. They built a compelling world in the animated version, but the film delivered on that vision.

Okay, I’ve got one that no one has mentioned.

    Space Truckers.

Without clicking the link, just imagine what it might be.

    Got it pictured?

Yes. It is exactly what you imagined. But somehow it’s also just all around…good? It’s good. I can’t explain it. But… it’s just… a pretty good movie.

    source
    • SwingingTheLamp@midwest.social ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Freaky! For the most part, name a movie, any movie, and I haven’t seen it. But I’m one of the few people who saw Space Truckers in a theater. Stuart Gordon went to school here, so he had screening of the film at the student union, followed by a Q&A session, back in '96.

Yes, it was a hoot! Gordon was a founder of an experimental theater company here which has the improv mentality of treating goofy ideas seriously and just going with them. That sensibility shows through in the movie, for sure.

      source
      • pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

It absolutely shows through. Watching Space Truckers is surreal like leaning over to look at a drawing on someone’s refrigerator, only to gradually realize that it’s a Picasso or a Rembrandt, just from their “crayon” phase. Space Truckers absolutely is what it says on the movie cover, just executed with a surprising mastery than even a casual movie fan like me couldn’t miss.

Square hogs! The square hogs are one of my all time favorite movie details. They’re so goofy, but still enhance the world building.

Mine’s gotta be The Brothers’ Grimm staring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. It’s the same camp vibe as the Van Helsing movie starring Hugh Jackman, but there’s no badass super hero to save the day - there’s just a bunch of imperfect people trying their best, and it’s almost entirely by luck or destiny that they snatch victory from the clutches of defeat. It’s also one of the most morbid depictions of childish horror i’ve seen on-screen, where it gives no fucks about being realistic.

Super Mario Bros. No, not the new CGI one, the old live action one. I know I’m not alone in loving this movie, but man is it divisive— those that don’t like like HATE it, and I think that’s the majority opinion.

I unironically love this movie. It’s not just nostalgia either, though I did watch it as a kid. I also watched the old Zelda cartoon as a kid when it first came out, and I loved it then but I can’t stand it now. No, I’ve watched this movie recently and it still rocks. It’s perfect for what it is, I think.

    source
    • Lucky_777@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Mario Bros is hated on hardcore, but to a fan, it was a great movie. You’ll never see something like Mario Bros again, I dont think they had any CGI in that movie.

      source
      • Iunnrais@lemm.ee ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

Maybe just a touch of cgi, like for the rippling wall when they cross dimensions, or morphing species when hit with the de-evolution ray. But that barely counts. The practical effects and set design were wonderful, and despite the weirdness of the mushroom king, definitely still hold up.

Ice Pirates (1984): A bunch of A-Listers before they were big. Great practical effects. Spaceships, Pirates, Time Travel, ‘robots’ It was magnificent.
