Not a shitty movie
medem@lemmy.wtf 2 months ago
I hate the fact that they made ‘The Descent 2’. Totally (and unnecessarily) killed the ambiguous ending of the original.
psycho_driver@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Well, you’re right, but it should have been.
Ok, then, circa early 2000s House on Haunted Hill
Grabthar@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Once Bitten, Joe vs the Volcano, and Mortal Kombat are all way better movies than they should have been.
noride@lemm.ee 2 months ago
Those are all absolute bangers, what are you going on about?
RacerX@lemm.ee 2 months ago
There’s a movie called Unstoppable (2010) with Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson. It’s about a runaway train causing trouble in Pennsylvania.
I’ve watched it no less than 30 times.
It’s not like I’m into trains or anything. I just think it’s a really good movie and every single actor in it is giving 100%.

My wife’s family loves The Princess Bride, but I love telling them that Stardust is better. It might not be correct, but it’s a pretty fun hill to die on.

No, I think you’re right.
Being lesser known doesn’t make it worse.

Additionally the VH1 TV edit is even worse. (In a bad way)

Super Mario Bros. No, not the new CGI one, the old live action one. I know I’m not alone in loving this movie, but man is it divisive— those that don’t like like HATE it, and I think that’s the majority opinion.
I unironically love this movie. It’s not just nostalgia either, though I did watch it as a kid. I also watched the old Zelda cartoon as a kid when it first came out, and I loved it then but I can’t stand it now. No, I’ve watched this movie recently and it still rocks. It’s perfect for what it is, I think.
Lucky_777@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Mario Bros is hated on hardcore, but to a fan, it was a great movie. You’ll never see something like Mario Bros again, I dont think they had any CGI in that movie.
Iunnrais@lemm.ee 1 month ago
Maybe just a touch of cgi, like for the rippling wall when they cross dimensions, or morphing species when hit with the de-evolution ray. But that barely counts. The practical effects and set design were wonderful, and despite the weirdness of the mushroom king, definitely still hold up.

Interstate 60 - a cute quirky B movie with some hella famous actors. Gary Oldman, Christopher Lloyd, Michael J Fox, James Maraden, Chris Cooper, Amy Smart, Kurt Russell. It is a fun and imaginative ride along a made up highway. My favorite scene was the town of Morelaw.
Big Trouble - a great movie shut down by circumstance. It was set for release in late 2001, the end of the movie involves hijacking a plane with a nuclear bomb, but then 9/11 happened so they sent it straight to video and stopped advertising it. Based on a Dave Barry novel, it’s a hilarious story involving a crazy cast of characters you may meet in Florida. Another star studded cast including Tim Allen, The Tooch, Martha Stewart, Janine Garofalo, Zoey Deschanel, Omar Epps, Jason Lee, Johnny Knoxville, and many more.
I have only met a couple people ever who have seen either of these movies.

I don’t think anyone out there would call Big trouble a crappy movie.
I do love that on rewatches, Jack is not even the main character and he’s more of a McGuffin that moves the story forward, while the supporting cast does the actual ass kicking and save the day
callouscomic@lemm.ee 1 month ago
There are comics nowadays too, and that series was so good.

Perfect movie.
But I’m biased, because my religion gives me the ability to navigate turbulent wormholes, too. So obviously I found it relatable.

Drinking anti freeze to resist being sprayed with liquid nitrogen is peak too.
Also I knew I could never be an actor when I tried to do the line “you gotta leave. Now.” in the same intonation as Chris Lloyd but couldn’t.

Das Millionenspiel.
It’s The Running Man except twelve years earlier and a media satire instead of an action movie. It comments on TV phenomena that wouldn’t exist in Germany until two decades later (like scripted “reality” TV). Also, it has early appearances of one of Germany’s most famous TV hosts (as the show’s host, fittingly) and one of Germany’s most famous comedians of the 70s to 90s (in a completely serious role, unfittingly). And unlike the Schwarzenegger movie it doesn’t construct a dystopian future to introduce public bloodsports but merely gives a terse reference to a “law on active recreation” dated three years after the movie first aired.
To make it even more odd, it’s actually a good movie despite being from Germany and made for TV.
CancerMancer@sh.itjust.works 2 months ago
That sounds amazing and we can always use more commentary on how media is made and consumed. I particularly enjoyed Network (1976) and Fahrenheit 451 (novel).

The need for speed movie. It’s not bad. I feel like the game they chose to reference is the worst and best choice for it.

Over the top premise, fantastical technology (ship armor is called UNOBTAIUM), some rough edges on the acting.
But I still love it dearly <3

Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies. No, not Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, the parody of that film made on the budget of the “plot” portion of a porn flick. I don’t know why I like it, but it’s some good dumb fun

Loads of classics in this thread, worth bookmarking to revisit later. Let me add one of my own that I haven’t seen mentioned:
Babe: Pig in the City (1998) - The first movie I saw in the theater by myself, because nobody could be arsed to come along. In the end I was glad, because I cried so much.
Lucky_777@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I didn’t go to a movie by myself till I was like 35. Underrated experience for sure. Saw Endgame while out at a work conference.

90 minutes of prime Gina Davis in a bikini doesn’t hurt either.

Fantastic movie! When I was single, a woman’s response to it was something I’d use to gauge compatibility. Mind you, they didn’t have to like it.

Half the reason I love Drop Dead Fred so much is because my wife hates it so much.
RowRowRowYourBot@sh.itjust.works 2 months ago
You need to listen to the “How Did This Get Made?” podcast episode about this movie and the follow up the next week. Two if the hosts, Paul Scheer and June Diane Raphael, are married and she loved the film as a child. Their other host Jason Mantzoukas sides with June and June’s BFF Casey Wilson sides with Paul.
It’s an insane episode as everyone is friends and they all have written scripts for films/TV. It gets so heated Casey and June didn’t talk much for a year after it.
It’s totally worth the time to listen to.

I haven’t really had time or enough commitment to listen to a podcast in a long while, but if I can find either I’ll give this a shot, as it sounds interesting. Thank you!

My mother used to call me a mean name and tell me she was quoting the movie. She thought it was funny. I’ve never seen that movie, but I don’t like it.
toynbee@lemmy.world 2 months ago
That’s plausible (lots of mean names are bandied about in the movie) and your reaction is understandable. I’m sorry for bringing up the memory.

Buddy of mine grew up on it and loves it, so we watched it. No idea what the fuck I watched lol weird movie
toynbee@lemmy.world 2 months ago
No disagreement here! I watched it a few times as a kid. I probably would feel similarly to how my wife does if I had first seen it as an adult.
