The Odyssey happened a long time ago. Before Google Maps. Those were the MapQuest days so things weren't so accurate and they probably got lost
The most unrealistic part of Odyssey is the journey taking 20 years

You’d need to print them out for reference on the journey.
hoch@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Look at Mr. Moneybags with a printer.
My parents would make me copy down directions by hand.
runner_g@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
and even then it was early MapQuest days and I’m sure Odysseus “knew a shortcut”.
Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Only the best navigators could hold the map quest printout up at dashboard height with one hand and simultaneously watch the road signs, the road, and the turn by turn instructions simultaneously. Many failed and simply drove off the face of the earth.
jrubal1462@mander.xyz 2 weeks ago
Oh God that anxiety when the printed directions tell you to turn right in 3.5 miles, and you feel like you’ve gone about 5 but you’re not sure, and maybe that slight split in the road counted as a right turn, and now you should be moving on to the next step but you’re not quite sure…

Also taking a boat overland takes forever, they don’t sail well on land
helvetpuli@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
slaacaa@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Were they stupid?
cannibalkitteh@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
No, they were just drawing it out for the Odysseus Cinematic Universe.
Fishy@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
They took a boat, clearly a detour
aeronmelon@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
They used Bing maps.
late_list@piefed.zip 2 weeks ago
That explains it. No direct water route. The Erie canal hadn’t been dug yet.

FluidBeef@quokk.au 2 weeks ago
Always was.

This guy was so bad at sailing, it’s astounding.
anguo@piefed.ca 2 weeks ago
I mean, he was a victim of the wrath of Poseidon, not that much you can do about that when at sea.
AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Seems to be decent at the sailing part. Navigation doesn’t seem to be even a minor part of his bailiwick
Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
Looks like the good old “Didn’t took a right at the crossroads and continued forward instead and then kept on insisting ‘I know the way’” driving problem.

Most of the bad stuff happened in Italy
hakunawazo@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
That’s… a creative attempt at the traveling salesman problem.
Sibshops@lemmy.myserv.one 3 weeks ago
Honda Odyssey is a good choice for that type of trip, but I’m more partial to a Crystler Pacifica, my self.
kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
I prefer the Christler Pacifica, personally
WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I have one of those I love that thing
myster0n@feddit.nl 3 weeks ago
Yeah, but once you factor in traffic …
TomMasz@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Just off the upper left of the map there’s Greece, NY. It’s a Rochester suburb. Just throwing that out there.
SpacePanda@mander.xyz 3 weeks ago
Looks like Rome is right there too.
jrubal1462@mander.xyz 2 weeks ago
Also Syracuse. And Marathon is in the map area but not labeled at this zoom.
Fmstrat@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Turn off highways and watch what happens.
tmyakal@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
Pretty sure you can still take Rt 13 and Rt 20 most of the way. Going through each town and hitting lights will add some time, sure, but we’re talking an hour, maybe 90 minutes. Odysseus has no excuse.
Fmstrat@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I did it by accident. It was interesting.
Bakkoda@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
20 goes coast to coast still i think
kungen@feddit.nu 3 weeks ago
Everyone’s talking about driving… but you actually can take a boat from Troy to Ithaca. Just take the Erie Canal west until you reach Montezuma, at the confluence proceed to the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, and continue south through Cayuga Lake, and at the end you’ll reach Ithaca.
Easy enough and only takes a couple days at the most. I have no idea why they needed to make some movie about this.
gray@lemmy.ml 2 weeks ago
It was back in the days before cars
Allero@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
Also probably not in New York
PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Probably? Do you have proof it wasn’t?
WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
New Amsterdam?

That was the whole point, wasn’t it?

Most of that time was just hanging out on an island not traveling

Don’t eat the lotuses in Schenectady.
rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
spitfire@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Scranton doesn’t seem to be on the route. If they’d take a detour like in the original though…
rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Come on, how can you not make that detour…
Bakkoda@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The problem is they turned onto Chrysler Ave instead of hitting 890 on crosstown and once you get on Chrysler Ave it’s impossible to get off and then you’re just stuck at Schenectady.
tmyakal@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
Hi neighbor! I love seeing other locals on lemmy.
4am@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Troy NY is a fucking psychotic place
tmyakal@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
It’s a hell of a lot better than it used to be. I remember being scared to be there in the '90s. They’ve put a lot of money into cleaning up downtown and the waterfront. Crime has plummeted through the floor. New construction and new restaurants have moved in. These days, it’s nearly the hipster Brooklyn scene of the Capital Region.
4am@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
That’s good to hear, I think around 2005 was my last experience there. Hope they figure it out!
Kcap@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
If you’re making this arduous journey, I strongly recommend stopping by the Hi-way Dairy Bar in Candor on 96B. Grab a Berry Twist, you won’t be disappointed.
sundray@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re having fun.
SourDragon@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Unrelated to the content at hand, but I recognise your pfp. Hello, fellow stoner.
azimir@lemmy.ml 3 weeks ago
That’s with a car, is it’s totally different.
If you had to push a Greek penteconter the whole way down that freeway, with occasional side trips for special requests, it might take you a long time too.
No_Money_Just_Change@feddit.org 2 weeks ago
As I probably will never see either: are any of the places on the map, especially itaka and troy (us) worth a visit?
1984@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
That’s not the most unrealistic part, unfortunately…
skvlp@lemmy.wtf 3 weeks ago
Ok, now show me the trip estimate for making that trip in a big boat…
DrSoap@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Took a quick detour for a garbage plate i see
itisileclerk@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
It’s a “fast food” version of the Odyssey compared to the original Michelin-starred meal.

Now you try rowing a boat on the highway!
eestileib@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Don’t do it during fall colors or you’ll be going 25 down one-lane roads.
ZeDoTelhado@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Reminds me of this cdebd838-092d-4c11-9c58-9eeab8d4c63e
Bakkoda@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I am going to downboat you because I’m a Subaru fan not because you are incorrect in your choice of vehicle.
ZeDoTelhado@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
When I first saw Subaru impresa back in 1998 I was a child, but I could see how special the car was. In fact, during late 90s and 2000s we had some very special cars coming out of rally.

Most movies would end faster if the main character was driving a Lancer.
vrek@programming.dev 2 weeks ago
The exorcist would be a VERY different movie though…

Juvyn00b@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
This is actually the correct answer. The journey to and within Mordor would be nothing for a SHERP!!

“Sam, you’re breaking the car!”
ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 2 weeks ago
Lol. Reminds me of Moses wondering the desert for 40 years to go like 400 miles.
theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
I don’t know not sure there is usable road? And this isn’t quiet the nazgul would be waiting for them and an ambush would be easy to set up.
omega_x3@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
One does not simply drive into Mordor…oh hell you have an Evo? Go on you’re good
Bluewing@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
When I see a rally car, I see a Lancer careening through a missed curve at high speed and flying off into the forest only to get wraped around several innocent trees.
Gwot@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Idk, maybe one of those Dakar cars could take gnarlier shortcuts
