Wow they look like two completely different people
Sean Connery in 1964 (on the set of Goldfinger) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster in 2024. Both age 34 in their respective photos.

Before reading the title i was like “wonder what happened to that kid?”. Lo and behold, mf is older than me and, on second glance, I prolly look older than Connery.
kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
The difference is 1 part genetics, 1 part skin care routines, 8 parts a lifetime with or without smoking and being surrounded by people smoking at nearly all times.
stickyprimer@lemmy.world 31 minutes ago
I wonder if it is also differing beauty standards. Older men used to be considered more sexy. Nowadays a guy over 40 is basically a corpse but if you watch old movies you’ll see guys who look 59 or even 60 in hero roles, and they get the girl, too.
So what I’m saying is, Sean Connery might never be chosen as a leading actor today because he looks too old.
cobysev@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
Sean Connery also wore a toupée ever since he was in his 20s. Dude went bald early and hid it from the world until he was an old man.

You forgot “1 part warlock’s curse”
I mean, the
boyman literally looks 13!It’s like Stephen King’s Thinner, but with visual age rather than weight.

Sean is always cool, but I wonder how Thomas would look had he been smoking a pack a day for 20 years too.
Eq0@literature.cafe 5 hours ago
Is this really it? I thought the non smoking would be compensated by the increased pollution of everything
Ariselas@piefed.ca 5 hours ago
I’m sure sun exposure also plays a role, everyone wears SPF 8000 sunblock now, while they were putting on tanning oil back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s
undree@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
Air pollution was worse in the last century ourworldindata.org/outdoor-air-pollution
someguy3@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
Pollution was worse back then, look up smog in the 70s. We’ve introduced catalytic converters, emissions standards, etc. Most people now question why we need clean air laws because we have clean air, much like people thinking we don’t need vaccines because those diseases aren’t around.
Ledivin@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
There’s significantly less air and water pollution now than the past, with the only exception being microplastics. We haven’t found many short-term impacts from that yet, though
boatswain@infosec.pub 5 hours ago
Pollution was probably another contributing factor; I’d be surprised if it wasn’t a lot worse in the 60s than it is now: a lot of environmental controls got put in place in the intervening decades. Remember, there was leaded gasoline everywhere, and acid rain scares and the ozone layer depletion in the 80s.
zewm@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
It’s a combination of many factors over time. Diet, sun exposure, smoking. Lots of things we have more information about now than we did then. Medicine is better, genetics, etc.
Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 5 hours ago
Oh ya, because removing lead from the air made it so much worse. /s

It’s funny that culturally 34 was considered a middle aged man back then whereas 34 today feels like an old 20 something.

You made my entire week and added spring in my step, I just hope it won’t ruin my knees.

What knees? Your bones are gone, dumb vegoon. They evaporated the moment you stopped consuming animals.

Re: the other comment, isn’t it weird how people just come up to you on the internet, and say, “hey, I’m an asshole, block me!” That’s weird.

The one on the right is also married to Elon Musk’s twice divorce ex-wife. As in the wife married Elon, divorced him, married Elon again, divorced him, then marred the guy on the right.

The fuck? I really liked this actor before but now I just feel gross.

“Autism face” is a thing that makes you look way younger than you should. I know I’ve got it. It’s weird being carded at 37.

Wait is perpetual teen guy going to be a bond?
boonhet@sopuli.xyz 28 minutes ago
Well unlike Sir Connery, he at least is English! Though I think Connery impressed Fleming so much that Bond was rewritten to be half-Scottish
But no, there has been no story published on the next Bond having been chosen yet. There are a lot of theories floating around and many of them are fairly unbelievable to the point that it may as well be perpetual teen guy.

That’s what smoking and sun exposure can do to a person. Smoking especially ages you fast.

Brodie-Sangster is also like preternaturally youthful looking. 1999 Kyle Chandler in Early Edition at age 34 sort of splits the difference, and Jesse Plemons at 36-38, after he lost some weight, is closing in on Connery levels of character in his face.
