I’ve been calling it 21st Century Blah. Is there a name for the architecture that goes with it? They rebuilt the Taco Bell down the road and looks likes this inside and outside.
BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
I remember the yuts raking millennials for their passion for grey.
I think the decades of stagflation makes everyone think they can resell whatever and it must be neutral to facilitate this eventual sale and escape from poverty.
dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 6 hours ago
I have served in the industry. This is exactly the rationale. I heard this one all the time: “But this isn’t our forever home. We’re only going to be in this house 20, maybe 25 more years. What if the new buyers don’t like it??? We have to make the safe choice.”
No statement. Only grey. Never mind that all four of those craptastic Frigidaire appliances in the picture will be scrap within six years anyway, if not less.
DagwoodIII@piefed.social 6 hours ago
Same thing with cars.
They used to be really colorful and fun. Now I’m surprised when I see a red car.
ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
The house I bought three years ago has those fake wood gray planks in the living room. I deliberately left the floor uncovered during renovation on the assumption that it would be destroyed and I’d have to replace it with something I actually like. Unfortunately, that shit is indestructible.
Saapas@piefed.zip 6 hours ago
I’m a millennial and it does appeal to me. It looks clean. Though I prefer the Nordic look.
janus2@lemmy.zip 1 hour ago
there are dozens of us! haha I’m just glad I’m not the only one.
though the criticisms of the aesthetic are valid. I just like my surroundings to be as non-distracting as possible and that overlaps with largely unimaginative design lol
Damage@slrpnk.net 8 hours ago
Our house at first looked like this, mostly because we couldn’t agree on colors. The bedroom area is still quite desaturated, but the living area and kitchen are much more colorful now.
boaratio@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
When we sold our house in the city 4 years ago, the realtor suggested we paint over our accent wall, and have all the walls in the house painted “reliable gray.” Apparently that’s the color that sells houses to white people.
adarza@lemmy.ca 1 hour ago
i call that ‘zillow gray’
BigPotato@lemmy.world 3 hours ago
It presents possibilities. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen people shut down a listing based on the current color… Changing it from puke green to… Anything else is apparently more work than changing from gray to anything.
I’m obviously washing over needing to reprime the walls depending on the color and quality of paint but it’s not just white people. White is too sterile but gray strikes the right balance. Same with staging furniture. Sets too many expectations for people sometimes.

Fuck me that’s literally the exact vinyl plank flooring in my apartment right now
Huge upgrade over the carpet I had originally though… Fuck carpet
im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 6 hours ago
Yeah carpet is nuts.
Why would you not want to cover your floor in something to trap all the dust and soak up any liquid which is impossible to clean.
rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
City apartment dweller here. My lease requires having carpet or rugs over a certain percentage of the floor area. It’s a basic necessity to avoid aggravating one’s neighbors on the floor below.
Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
Helps retain heat. The solution is a throw rug in the winter that you hose off in the spring though.
Cheebus@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
at one point we had carpet in our bathroom

Pre-war?
This country has been in a constant state of war since I was 14, I’m 38 now. We were out of war for like what? 6 months to a year before we started this clusterfuck?
Trex202@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
Pre-WWIII, that’s the big one, fatty!
ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 5 hours ago
One day we’ll accept the seven years war as ww1.
Phanlix@lemmy.zip 7 hours ago
Fatty? Certainly making some assumptions there lol.
But okay, even if it is WW3, with WW1 and WW2 we weren’t in a continuous near 30 year state of war leading up to those wars.
BigPotato@lemmy.world 3 hours ago
Hate to tell you but the Gulf war was going on before you were fourteen.
SillyDude@lemmy.zip 4 hours ago
Even RVs and campers are like this, its cancer. Mine was built in the early 90s and has such a awesome vibe.
some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 3 hours ago
I grew up using a 1975 fifth wheel trailer as a cottage and it was cozy as shit. The new ones are really uncomfortably reminiscent of the “studio” condos they’re building all over the country. Why do people think anyone wants to camp in that atmosphere?!
TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
This was the answer to all beige/“off white” of the preceding decades.
When you sell a house, it needs to be as generic as possible, to appeal to as many people as possible. The staging furniture is suppose to take up the style slack. Except we made all the furniture gray, too. And, cars, for some reason.
Fucking gray cars, WTH?
Agent641@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
All the colour in the ink cartridge was used up in the 70s and 80s, now it’s just black ink left, and not much of it.

I'm not a fan of this, but I'm also not a fan of things that are so fashionable that I will not be able to look at them after a year or 2. So... I don't know if I care enough.
Hedup@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
I really like these kinds of designs:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIAqyVSp-xA
It feels old timey, but somehow specific to geographical area/country. I guess, what I’m trying to say is that I like designs that have “character” whatever that means.

GreenShimada@lemmy.world 9 hours ago
Ugh - I can’t express how much I hate this. It’s not clean or sterile, just… straight lines dingy. Eeyore as an interior design aesthetic.
ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 7 hours ago
As a certified Old Fart™, it’s better than the colored porcelain bathrooms of the 70s and 80s…
Chrome was shiny & futuristic, so stainless steel appliances looked sleek and modern when they were first introduced, but now that they’re everywhere they look drab and sterile. I’m waiting for things to shift back the opposite direction where everything will have integrated LED panels and the whole kitchen will glow in RGB like a desktop computer rig. (Honestly, I don’t know if that would be terrible ore awesome.)
ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 6 hours ago
Eeyore is quite often purple or blue nowadays
For shame dragging Eeyore into this dingy millennial Epstein shit

Wait … there are microwaves and fridges in your luxury apartments? We bring our own!
adarza@lemmy.ca 1 hour ago
rentals in the u.s. generally include stovetop and oven (or combined ‘range’) and refrigerator (with freezer), and microwave if it’s ‘built-in’.

They are made to look like steel, because good quality steel is expensive as compared to the materials they use in it.
The flooring?
IDK what that BS is. I’d rather have granite, which is again, a luxury because it is hard to machine.
jj4211@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
I am eager for faux wood vinyl planks to go out.
I don’t mind vinyl, but just find the attempt to imitate wood makes it feel obviously like cheaping out.
mirshafie@europe.pub 13 minutes ago
In general, making things look like something it’s not just feels wrong. Unironically painting plaster walls to look like stone or brick comes to mind - you’re ruining the plaster.
adarza@lemmy.ca 1 hour ago
that shit has a layer that is literally printed onto a thin sheet of vinyl.
