trying to force the app, force the networking… get the printer online and sending data back, trick an account signup too… because, hey. user data nom nom nom.
and of course, also trick you into enabling automatic firmware updates–the first of which will be waiting for you and ramps-up blocking of third-party consumables.

- Comment on How is TikTok being blocked in the US? 3 days ago:
he wouldn’t be able to, anyway.
the deadline is the sunday the 19th. monday the 20th is mlk day (federal holiday) and the last morning of the biden administration. diaperking is then in charge. even though it was his idea to begin with, he’s flopped on the issue.
- Comment on How is TikTok being blocked in the US? 3 days ago:
afaik the legislation doesn’t include active blocking of a qualifying service’s (which includes tiktok by name, but is not limited to only it or bytedance) traffic…
it only prohibits the distribution of their ‘apps’ (such as via google/apple ‘stores’)–this is the part that does most the heavy lifting, and hosting of their services within the u.s.
- Comment on Will getting my drivers liscense renewed mess with my employer checking my driving record? 5 days ago:
a simple renewal won’t mess up their driving records check. it’s not even worth a mention to the new employer or anything. just do it and get it done before its expiry.

- Comment on Why it redownloads files that are rendered in my app\browser? 1 week ago:
a straight, ordinary image display in a page or tab will save to the cache, and if you then save it to disk yourself from there, firefox will utilise the cache. i see this behaviour every day.
some addons will interfere with this. and cache settings, of course, do as well. there’s also some ways to construct a web page that makes it harder to save an image, or doesn’t save the image to the client’s cache at all–requiring another hit to and download from the origin to do the requested ‘save’

i’ve seen that, also doctored screenshots…
one they just transferred money from savings into checking, then doctored a screenshot and put that on the screen instead (photoshopped by a second actor also accessing the pc remotely) to make it look like an errant payment came in… of $14,000.
they almost got taken, made it all the way to the bank to pull the money out (to take to moneygram or something iirc) and the teller shut it down right there. wouldn’t let 'em. sent 'em to me instead.
the screenshot was nearly perfect… the font wasn’t quite right and they fucked up the math at the bottom showing that sub-account’s balance… forgot about the cents, just put an even dollar amount there.
- Comment on We overpaid you and need you to pay back $.23 1 week ago:
boss here was havin’ a fit over 2 cents last week.
it was her goof. and involved numbers much larger than 0.02. i think she got it all sorted now.
- Comment on We overpaid you and need you to pay back $.23 1 week ago:
i think it’s higher now. but yea, it’s gonna cost them. plus the labor involved with setting up the whole ‘get the money back’ operation, and receiving and tracking what does come back.

those who have used it exclusively for a decade or two can utilize that stick better than the trackpad, or even a mouse. they’re crazy good with it. i fumble with it like i’m trying to move the mouse with an old 2600 joystick that leans to the left.

i haven’t even turned on my tv in over a year because of that bullshit. i’ve just been using a monitor + laptop + 2.1 pc speakers.
- Comment on what unbiased media sources do you use? 2 weeks ago:
‘the chart’ is a good starting point.
note: linking to harvard because they have a static snapshot that is viewable without scripting enabled. just click it to go to the source at ad fontes.
i tend to stick with local public radio. it’s always on when i’m in the car. when i see a post or headline that i want to read more about, i feed it to the duck and look for relevant content at places like reuters, ap, npr, or the nearest major papers (milwaukee, madison) that aren’t in chicago (too much ‘chicagoland’ in them, and i avoid the city).
- Comment on what unbiased media sources do you use? 2 weeks ago:
note that in addition to staff reporting, the ap is also reliant on member publications–which means that those biases end up on ‘the wire’, too.

the building’s lifetime? nope.
the lifetime of their marketplace seller account.
- Comment on I need a flicker free LED lightbulb running in the 3000 K range. 2 weeks ago:
of course they wanna charge you. they’ve been purposefully fucking with incandescent light bulb lifetimes for a hundred years as a means to increase profits.
they can’t do that anymore, so they need another racket to get you to keep coming back and giving them money…
and they found it.
just like every other greedy bastard corporation—subscriptions.
at least they aren’t gimping the led units to some arbitrary lifespan, but you know damn well they’re using the cheapest shortest-lasting sub-components and cheapest manufacturing they can find.
