- Comment on How come on The Price is Right you can't bid in change like 999.99 or for the jackoffs 1000.01? Or can you but has never been attempted? 14 hours ago:
bid in whole dollars–and values of items bid on are also rounded to the nearest dollar, too. i think that’s just part of the rules. as far as i can remember, only a few of the pricing ‘games’ (and the big wheel, of course) had things in cents or dollars+cents.
- Comment on Have a Tootsie Roll, Fatso! 15 hours ago:
the whole thing was advertisements for tootsie roll candies. so the name ‘fit’, i guess.

- Comment on Can I freeze already cooked burger patties? 1 day ago:
yea, you can freeze it. i’d do something like 2 big or 4 juniors per sandwich bag, then put those bags into a couple larger gallon size bags. pull out one of the small bags at a time to thaw in the fridge.
back in the before times, when i could afford beef, i’d do 3-5 lbs at a time that way. now i just get 'em every now and then from my boss when they cook a few extra on the grill and she brings me a couple (home raised, the very good stuff). and yea, they’re often frozen when i get 'em from her, too.
- Comment on Is this machine good enough to install QEMU considering that it runs on windows 10 ? 1 day ago:
i see a ram upgrade in your future. 4gb is barely enough for win10 to boot and run a browser or something. will need more on top of that for what you’re gonna be running with qemu. other than that, as long as you have virtualization enabled, the rest is ‘good enough’
- Comment on Is it safe to use a non-gaming computer for light gaming? 1 day ago:
absolutely… but you may need to turn down graphics settings in-game. also make sure you don’t block the ventilation–most have intakes on the bottom and output the side or the back of the base.

if i was changing mine, i’d want something literally ungoogleable… something so common it gets completely lost in the crowd.

we’ve been going backwards on fuel efficiency. the little compact i had back in the early 90s got over 40mpg.

gonna guess the other bathroom is the same, just ‘backwards’. someone mixed-up the counters and nobody cared enough to correct the error.

My Little Pony gardening sim
that would be an improvement for some.
- Comment on Do you remember every single scene and dialogue of a show or movie you just watched? 1 week ago:
it takes watching (or reading) something many times to remember even just a few choice quotes. i dunno how people pull quotes out of thin air from obscure things they’ve seen or read one time.
- Comment on How are you using your laptop (with internet) that still runs Windows10? 1 week ago:
debian trixie was released at just the right time, about two months before win10 went on life support.
- Comment on How are you using your laptop (with internet) that still runs Windows10? 1 week ago:
we still have some win10 here. not too worried given who is using them and for what purposes. we’ve retired from some of our work so we don’t have or access any sensitive data (medical records mostly) anymore.
if you need it, try to score the extra update time for ‘free’ (check settings-windows update for the offer). i’ve done that for a few people and it didn’t even mess up their ‘backup’ status… but do check to make sure it’s off if you do that method. there are other ‘methods’ but idk if LW lets you discuss them.
- Comment on As adults, do you still watch kids’ cartoons, either old or new? 1 week ago:
the best ones usually do sneak a little something in for the grown-ups “stuck” watching them.
- Comment on As adults, do you still watch kids’ cartoons, either old or new? 1 week ago:
“still watch”? i never stopped.
- Comment on 1 week ago:
pretty much anything can serve files… would probably need to be on a wired lan connection, not slow wifi, and there obviously wouldn’t be any real-time transcoding available as there are no hardware encoders on that chip. it does have decoders to playback mpeg2, wmv9 and h264, though.
- Comment on 1 week ago:
your old laptop has a 45 watt a4-3330mx processor. it’s slow. very slow. it uses a lot of power for that slowness. use it to learn on, but once you’re ready to ‘deploy’ an always-on service, i would highly recommend something a little newer and more energy efficient. especially if you live in a part of the world with high electricity costs.
the intel n100 processor in popular minipc draw a max of just 6 watts while also being 6-8x faster than the 3300mx
- Comment on If the next president said screw the norms, and rented or put Camp David up for sale to create a program to increase SNAP benefits could he? 1 week ago:
the defense dept ‘owns’ camp david.
all of the bullshit policy and ‘executive orders’ could be undone in a day. legislation and court decisions will take longer, perhaps much longer, to ‘undo’.
turning the white house into an airbnb wouldn’t be allowed for security reasons (among other things).
policy can be made, and without congressional oversight, over how tax enforcement and evasion investigations go. legislation would be needed, though, to ‘give’ the proceeds back to the ‘middle class’ by way of tax credits or somesuch.
- Comment on Tech support for mum 1 week ago:
if she won’t use or learn a password manager, then get her an address book to write them down in. it’s got tabs for organizing sites alphabetically and plenty of room for each entry to have the site, username, password and a date (it was added to the book or updated). there are ‘password books’, but an address book works just as well. the labels on the blanks don’t need to match with what you’re actually using it for.
i make my own for people that need one, using a page layout i made, printed and 3-hole punched, then put into either a folder with clips to hold the paper or a small 3-ring binder.

- Comment on 60% of PC gamers have no plans to build a new PC in the next two years — AI pricing crunch on RAM and other components paralyze enthusiast market 2 weeks ago:
my 1st gen is still going. it’s i7 and 32gb ram so still plenty good for what i need it to do (hell, so is the older athlon next to it, ftm), even with the unsupported ‘upgrade’ and ancient hdd for boot and storage. i have a spare identical mb and cpu, just in case. i have better systems, i just like that one. we have a long history together and everything is right where i want, and expect, it to be.
- Comment on Planning a World Cup Watch Party at a Bar? The ‘FIFA Police’ Are Lurking 2 weeks ago:
i don’t even have to work that hard to avoid it. there’s no soccer here. the local school doesn’t field a team, there isn’t a youth soccer program either. it’s either hockey season or conditioning-and-training for next hockey season.
- Comment on Sony hasn't decided on PS6 release date or price yet, and may even "change business models" in response to the memory crisis 2 weeks ago:
in my ‘rural’ part of the u.s., sub-1mbit dsl is common outside of town, and expensive–if you even have that option at all. cellular service sucks and there are no fixed wireless services, so satellite is the only other game available…if you don’t have bluffs, hills, or trees obstructing your view.
- Comment on Missed call 3 weeks ago:
i do that too. if it’s from a number i’m gonna answer, i do. and then watch the call timer on the phone and don’t say anything until after three seconds. legit callers are always still there, the computers–never are.
if a call rings through that the phone company has tagged in caller id as probably bogus. i just answer and hang-up right away. they don’t call back.
- Comment on Missed call 3 weeks ago:
since STIR/SHAKEN rolled out, the scam and robocalls here have really dropped off. only a few per week now… even to the phone numbers that are published (intentionally) online.
of the ones that get through, nearly all of them are coming through new voip points-of-presence popping-up in small towns all over our very rural part of the country.
- Comment on Introducing Google Cloud Fraud Defense, the next evolution of reCAPTCHA | Google Cloud Blog 3 weeks ago:
the qr itself is just a link to a recaptcha web page with a unique identifier in the url.
the magic is all hidden in the required app that’s linked to your google account and device, and the interactions that take place between it and google’s servers once it sees that code or link.
