I’m disabled and can’t afford a working computer to play video games, you rich motherfucker.
Young men are 'playing videogames all day' instead of getting jobs because they can mooch off of free healthcare, claims congressman

We have free health care? Coulda fooled me.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmings.world 5 hours ago
I’m not concerned about some young videogamer getting free healthcare. I’m more concerned with the DOGE GOBLIN getting BILLIONS in government contracts to build rockets that blow up spectacularly, wasting a billion dollars with every explosion, just so he can quip “Just a scratch.”
That’s a billion dollar scratch that could have made a huge difference in thousands of lives.
I’m not worried about American citizens getting health care, I’m worried about Foreign Sociopathic Oligarchs getting BILLIONS in government contracts, paid for by taxes on the working class, while calling those same workers/taxpayers “parasites.”
UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 hours ago

Okay, sure. But consider that they didn’t earn those billions of dollars by sucking up to the right assortment of Wall Street financiers and rich family members.

Anybody who has ever been unfortunate enough to have to apply for any of these healthcare or food stipend programs would know that it’s not as easy as the government makes it seem. In fact, the amount of bureaucracy, means testing, and highly restrictive income limitations means that most people don’t qualify period and people who do qualify have to spend an inordinate amount of time waiting to hear back from the government to know if they have been accepted or not, all the while hoping and praying they don’t get sick and can manage their money long enough to continue feeding themselves.
Case in point, my fiance is out of work right now and actively seeking work. She applied for both MediCAL and SNAP and was denied for MediCAL because she had earned too much already that year to qualify and the SNAP benefits totaled out to $20/month in food stamps, based on historical income, which is insufficient even for the most frugal of individuals to make work. This is for someone currently earning $0/month and being almost entirely supported by me.
After a certain point, it becomes a massive drain on your time and resources that could be spent looking for a job, so you stop bothering with the system altogether because who wants to spend hours doing paperwork and submitting claims just to get enough spare change to buy a bulk bag of rice to feed yourself a struggle meal?
I don’t want to hear shit about “handouts” from anybody. My fiance paid her taxes faithfully for years without ever having to rely on the program, so where are her benefits? She has undoubtedly paid more into the system than she will ever extract.

Rich people always think they pay for everyone. Wrong.
We are in the same society. A society with no hope is not a stable society.

Its a lot more rewarding than choking on a small carrot.
Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 42 minutes ago
Should have chewed first.

I don’t accept the premise that working a job to make someone else rich is axiomatically good.
Many jobs make the world worse. I’d rather someone sit at home and play Tetris than build murder-drones, or work on some sort of AI powered stalking-ad company.
Many of the jobs are just bullshit. Another “AI” company? Another product manager with no real decision making power? A few billion dollars poured into “the metaverse”? Waste of time and resources.
That aside, most jobs make the owners rich while labor gets a few crumbs. You work all day making widgets. The boss pays you $10. They sell your widgets for $1000. That’s a bum deal. But there’s a thousand desperate people waiting to take your spot, plus union busters eager to betray labor and beat you up. Pay people the real value of their labor, and treat them with respect, and you’d likely get more people working.
Johnson is a heretical, hypocritical, piece of shit. No one should take him seriously. His church should – wait, he’s southern baptist? The “we’re going to split off because we want slavery” sect? Not surprising. Those assholes suck.
owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
Can confirm. Here in Canada, nobody works. We all sit at home and play video games instead. There’s no industry, no shops, no hospitals. Only video games.
TwinTitans@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Yeah, most people I know don’t have jobs! We just run extension cords between our igloos to power our video game machines. If it weren’t for them we could totally be like the States. 🤦🏻♂️😂
NocturnalEngineer@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Can confirm, only video games in the UK too. Certainly not the 6th largest economy in the world worth £3.84 trillion. Nor a labour force with 74.9% in employment, that would be silly!

Norwegian living in Denmark. I moved from Norway because everyone was just gaming, but I wanted to go to gigs, so I moved. Turns out everyone games in Denmark all the time too! It must be why the Northern European countries score so high in the happiness rating: all we do is game all day. It’s not like these countries have any money, especially Norway.

In Québec we all own a state mandated PS5 (no Xbox’s allowed, that would be illegal) and play a variety of Fifa, Marvel Heroes and Valorant because it’s said to sharpen our skills and better society. Many women knock on my door saying they want me to grant them children, but knowing that my KDA might suffer from their demands I know not to give in, and to instead keep grinding until my next government granted dialysis appointment. Mon dieu que j’aime le Québec 🙏
dubyakay@lemmy.ca 22 hours ago
I’ve been on the waiting list for my PS5 for the past four years. Just like my family doctor.

sounds nice tbh
TheBat@lemmy.world 19 hours ago
Exactly.
Even before computers, we Indians were happily playing Chess until Mughals invaded us.
And then we showed them Chess, got them hooked, and then Brits invaded us.

I couldn't possibly do both things!

AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.ca 5 hours ago
I can’t wait to pay for groceries with my free healthcare.
ThatGirlKylie@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
This is just the “violent video games make people violent” argument from the 90s and 00s. Fear mongering at its core.
RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
“These violent games make you violent!” “These cozy games make people lazy!”
Sometimes I think they just complain because it’s a fetish for them.

Another boomer fucking idiot saying idiot fucking boomer shit because idiot fucking boomers voted like boomer fucking idiots.
raynethackery@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
He’s fucking Genx, my generation. I hate every GenXer that sold out. Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, remember we are fighting class warfare. Don’t let them divide us along generational lines. My good friend is a Boomer and is as liberal as can be. My two coworkers are GenX and both voted for Trump.
don@lemmy.ca 6 hours ago
I’m also genx (xennial if it matters) and I’m referring to the boomer mindset, not the baby boomer generation. There are zoomers who voted for the current fascist regime and baby boomers who voted Harris. I hate generational warfare too, but “boomer” is a convenient term for an appalling mindset that can infect anyone, regardless of generation.

Lmfao what free healthcare?
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
Seriously. I’d love some free healthcare.
I’d probably be able to be more functional if I had proper healthcare.
Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 9 hours ago
The argument is utterly stupid.
Ignoring that the it’s building on a fantasy reality for the moment. Even if you had free healthcare, and if only the financial costs of survival motivated people to get jobs, then the other costs of living, like for food and shelter, would still provide that motivation.
impetchewus@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
Um also, can I get some of that free healthcare? Cuz I have NEVER received free healthcare in my life!
iMastari@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
I only play computer games after I get home from working hard all day.
some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 10 hours ago
The problem is that voters are so damn stupid that someone can make a statement like this without being interrogated.
ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 10 hours ago
Or the media will be like “Yeah, that makes sense” and will not push back.
RagingRobot@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
Yeah they just move on and don’t even call out the lie. Then people see it and assume it’s true

The same old “welfare queen” argument again.
rozodru@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
working where exactly? working on a farm that will pay you minimum wage, if that? oh OH I know working in the tech sector where it’s now and has been for the past couple years an absolute nightmare to find a job in.
There are NO jobs out there that will pay for the current cost of living and the ones that COULD aren’t hiring, and if anything, are laying people off. And yeah, these unemployed young men are TOTALLY playing videogames that now cost $80 a pop paid via a job they don’t have.

Btw is $80 actually up from the oughts and 10s? I’ve had $80 as the price for the latest AAA game in my head forever and am continually surprised it hasn’t changed.

Us this Free Healthcare in the room with us now, you miserable ghoul?
Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 hours ago
What free healthcare?
Young men have to jump through the most hoops to get state level health insurance.
Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Or, what if their healthcare continued to be free so they wouldn’t have an incentive to find a way to live on $700 month?
I know one of those young men playing video games, and he REALLY wants a job, but no matter how he works the math, the medication that keeps him alive costs more than what he’d make. So, it’s budget around permanent poverty or die.
Default_Defect@midwest.social 1 day ago
Same reason I’ve been unemployed for a long while, my disability and medicare covers so much of my costs that working would likely result in less money in my pocket.
HeyJoe@lemmy.world 1 day ago
What are you going to do after all this is over, and it’s either even harder to get or just completely gone? Im sorry you have to go through any of this…
ms_lane@lemmy.world 21 hours ago
They’d have to have free healthcare in the first place…
hperrin@lemmy.ca 21 hours ago
That does make sense considering every other developed country has free healthcare and literally 100% of there young men spend every waking hour playing video games.
Gibibit@lemmy.world 19 hours ago
It does make sense because I break my legs regularly playing video games, putting a huge strain on public healthcare.
hperrin@lemmy.ca 19 hours ago
You’re probably holding your controller wrong.
BleatingZombie@lemmy.world 20 hours ago
It also makes sense considering I eat Prozac for dinner and live under a shelter made of BandAids
ieatpwns@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
Oh god they’ve been shitting on video games since pinball. Get some new lines bro
wabasso@lemmy.ca 9 hours ago
They should control video games like they control guns.

But where's the free healthcare?
