Teaching students to not conflate correlation with causation by pointing out absurd assumptions of causality from correlation.
Hrmmm 🤔

only 7 years to save for a house? well maybe i guess if you don’t have major emergencies. i’m going to go laugh madly in the corner now.
DudleyMason@lemmy.ml 4 hours ago
I believe the correct answer to OPs question is "an object lesson in the difference between correlation and causality.
Or proof he doesn’t understand that difference, whichever applies.

Violent crime precedes ice cream consumption. Clearly crime makes people hungry for ice cream.
TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
You scream, I scream?
lugal@sopuli.xyz 8 hours ago
While I do not disagree with you, we shouldn’t underestimate the consumption of stolen ice cream which increases both.
Zidane@lemmy.ca 6 hours ago
I always violent crime before I ice cream
taiyang@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
I like the Nic Cage movies and drowning deaths correlation more. Lol

That “teacher” has interpretation, extrapolation, and interpolation issues.
YoFrodo@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
its just an AI meme anyways
kylie_kraft@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
I don’t know that it’s AI, but the graph is obviously drawn over the picture. I think the original was just making of the professor for wearing a t-shirt over a flannel shirt
TachyonTele@piefed.social 9 hours ago
It’s like people forgot Photoshop exists
doingthestuff@lemy.lol 2 hours ago
Clearly he has studied history.

I can’t debate it
Mac@mander.xyz 38 minutes ago
There’s nothing to debate—it’s just an example of correlation.
tidderuuf@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Gonna need to call in the master at debatin.

voxthefox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 hours ago
Probably trying to make a point that correlation and causation are not always related.
nailingjello@piefed.zip 10 hours ago
Yep. The image is fake, but the graph by itself is an excellent example that correlation does not equal causation.
anugeshtu@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
Wait, did you know that there’s a direct correlation between the decline of Spirograph and the rise in gang activity?
JennaR8r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 hours ago
The last time I played with a Spirograph was early 2020 so that’s my alibi. I’m not guilty of any of this gang activity you speak of.
redlemace@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
Even though you could argue the graphs are right, that still does not mean the variables are related in some way.
crank0271@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
Line go up 📈 But also sometimes line go down 📉
Kwiila@slrpnk.net 10 hours ago
It’s a round about way of expressing that correlation does not imply causation. It was done so that everytime someone shares this meme of a guy wearing a T-shirt over his flannel, someone in the audience can explain that the graphs intentionally represent a fallacy.
JennaR8r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 hours ago
Teacher wore his undershirt on top of his outer shirt. Was it backwards day?
humanspiral@lemmy.ca 4 hours ago
smoking withdrawal and not letting the expletives flow together with therapy mandated to deflect social responsibility for your problems increases the frequency of those flying off the handle. Vidya game complexity increases from pong could be a factor too. :P

Lirton@lemmy.today 7 hours ago
Looks more like MS Paint to me, but can be wrong.
Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 5 hours ago
Hey, I wear t-shirts over plaid sometimes. It’s not fashionable right now, but this is a little too judgemental.

this image is photoshopped. i can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
Janx@piefed.social 9 hours ago
That’s correct. I checked with David Photoshop and he confirmed it.
GreenShimada@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
Hey, does he know John Reader and Jeff Lightroom?
dditty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 hours ago
The amount of photoshops has also dramatically increased since 1970

There is something about his face that doesn’t look natural but I’m not quite sure if it’s Photoshop or AI
yermaw@sh.itjust.works 6 hours ago
Its resting DOOM face
dditty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 hours ago
I see it too but it’s a little bit blurry on the details
Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 5 hours ago
They cut his fingers off. It’s definitely AI.
driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 5 hours ago
A imagem foi feita em photoshop. Posso falar pelos pixels e por que ja vi alguns shops no meu tempo.
Tiral@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
Sim, concordo. Me impressiona o quanto a IA consegue economizar tempo na edição de fotos atualmente.
