What do you mean by cultural entropy, exactly? It seems like a rather nebulous term.
Pudutr0n@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I mean the general degradation of good faith, values, trust and aspiring to a shared goal within a society. Sure, some people will never have these things. The problem is when they become a majority.
GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
Super unpopular around these parts, i’m sure

If you’re looking for intelligent conversation with people in a niche community, you’re better off looking on Reddit than Lemmy.
VelvetPinkOtter123@lemmy.world 1 month ago
my experience is that lemmy users are actually worse than reddit users, but there are less people here so you don’t have to put up with as much stupid shit
I think the average reddit users is like 30, where the average lemmy user seems to be 15
That being said, I can stand to come here once every couple of days and browse for 15 minute
I rarely see anybody say anything of any intelligence while I’m here as it’s just more of the same doomer bullshit I’d find everywhere else, but it’s like 6 people saying it here instead of 1,000 saying it there

Rust is an “industry plant” language. There’s an active campaign to shield it from criticism, by claiming no part of the language has any drawbacks, and that all haters are Brian Lunduke fans angry about trans people. In reality, it is being pushed onto things where its strengths are more often shortcomings, such as game development, where it’s causing active harm, especially as you’d need something with an actual C++ interop, and not just a trendy language written by someone who got angry for management forcing them to write
FactoryFactoryclasses for stuff that could been a single function. I get that Functional Programming is “mathematically correct”, but it shouldn’t be the only tool, and you just go back being the person who forced you to write theFactoryFactoryclass, just because they read Uncle Bob.0x0@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
Cherry on top is wanting to replace well-established, battle-tested, decades old software that had all of its serious issues ironed out long ago with Rust… because said software is written in C.
Rust, the new Java.
chunes@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Java’s syntax is at least nice to look at. Rust on the other hand…
davidagain@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Rust isn’t a functional programming language. Like many modern languages it has some concepts and features borrowed from functional programming languages, but fundamentally its an imperative language, not a functional one.
Katana314@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I ended up avoiding game development in part because of C/C++. Part of that is because you inevitably write C for various library imports, with little object-oriented operation. The other part is the archaic mess of the templating, which is totally unnecessary.
I don’t mind being forced to manage memory carefully, to follow what is actually happening to RAM. RAII also makes a lot of sense to me. But the obtuse declarations are often sideways from that. Worse, while there were new language features around the time I stopped, they were actively avoided.
I wanted to mention that because it seems like the few people who have any knowledge of C are devoted to it. I don’t know enough of Rust to actually champion it, but it isn’t the only language shielded from criticism.
kunaltyagi@programming.dev 1 month ago
If you want a higher language for game dev, use Godot + C#
G_M0N3Y_2503@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
I think the best analogy to highlight the drawbacks of Rust is to say it’s like “Good test coverage.”. If you read that as 100% test coverage you can spend a lot of time doing some trivial overhead that probably isn’t doing a whole lot. But, if you have half a brain it’s probably not particularly harmful. If you read that as effective test coverage, you probably know the problem quite well and it’s probably some overhead, but you get to feel a bit more confident and have some executable documentation.
Neither of which I have heard to be useful or converted in the game industry so it sounds like a waste of time.
That said, if you’re like me and that overhead sounds nice, then you might like Rust :P
kunaltyagi@programming.dev 1 month ago
Tests can improve prove absence of a big. They can’t eliminate it.
In a similar vein, languages like rust can only raise the bar of shooting yourself in the foot, they can’t eliminate it.
My main reason for hating rust is the npm like cargo cult. Please don’t have 50 reps which you update every few months. It’s impossible to do anything else except vendor most rust crates.

I think it’s worth it. It’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God given rights.
Everyone with guns is worth school shootings, basically. Sandy Hook isn’t an issue for him, because it’s worth it.

Feels weird to downvote anything in this whole thread, but this gets an exception for being a dangerous opinion.
We have a lifesaving medication that’s not just for addicts but ANYONE overdosing (children getting into parents meds, college kids not knowing what their friend just gave them, etc). Yes, many addicts may wind up needing it again if they aren’t careful, but to say a lifesaving medication is bad for society is just absurd.

Epstein didn’t kill himself.
There is a conspiracy. The fact that he was taken off suicide watch, nobody was watching him, and he was given the tools to kill himself was 100% deliberate. That’s the conspiracy.
I think most conspiracies are stupid, people stepping over $20 to pick up a dime. There are background actions driving events that they ignore but instead people look for UFOs, assassinations, or “second shooters” like they’ve got it all figured out.

The reverence for artists in our society is way overdone. I’m not just talking about the Andy Worhols and Taylor Swifts that make WAY too much money for what they give to society. I’m talking about the every day artists. People are way too excited for people who make art as a career, and many of them who complain that they are underpaid are wrong. Art is a fun thing that everyone enjoys doing. Be grateful you are able to monetize it at all.

I posted an unpopular opinion there and people just downvoted it and got mad, lol.
Basically I said that complaining about a paywalled article in comments is annoying and contributes nothing, especially if it’s from an independent long form writer. If someone links to paid media and you don’t want to pay, the post isn’t for you. Just go away.
Some people said “nooo if you make a post and I can’t see the content without paying you’re being a meanie because I can’t participate”
Not every post is for everyone.

Politicians are should not have security, if they are going to have security near them it should only be for the safety of the local environment and those taking actions against non political officials. My biggest problem with Jan 6th is that they were a bunch of filthy fascists and not that they wanted to lunch Congress, frankly speaking it’d be funny and politicians are easily replaceable even the ones I vaguely like.
Human life is cheap and in the case of politicians all but forfeited apon their oaths.
Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not but IMO the whole concept of “support the visibility of opinions you don’t like” was doomed from the start because you can’t force people to play along with an alternate vote meaning (and the version this is an alternate to also wasn’t the intention behind the voting system, so there already was a drive to use votes as support of the idea rather than the discussion).
Also, if posts make it to all, then there will be voters who don’t even realize the community wants votes to work differently, even if they care about what the community wants.

No, they will get me killed.
One unpopular opinion which is safe for me to share is that we should all own less pets, and need to cultivate much more green space in our cities if we want to have them.
- If you’re American in the suburbs, this would mean people should not have lawns, but fill em with plants or crops.
- where i live this would mean more pocket parks and room for wildlife to thrive. Which requires some houses and disused buildings going, or more roads closed up for pedestrianised greenspace.
One reason i believe this is because cats, for instance, slaughter loads of little creatures. Just imagine - if half the households on a street has their own pet cat, all the mice in the area are getting killed. They’re actually so much better st getting mice than rats, too, so it barely has that benefit. Rats are huge.
Another reason is because dogs … they should be working, and they should have access to interesting greenspace. Sorry if you have a dog and can’t provide this, i just think it’s so fucked up that we have more dogs in the world than we can actually take care of in this way. Would you force a human to live most of its life indoors with nothing to do? Dogs need more company than many people afford them - i remember reading that people returned their dogs after lockdown because they wouldn’t be able to take care of them when working full time, etc cetera.
So I would only have a dog if I had a big garden for it or a huge park nearby. I would ideally have some sort of role sharing with neighbours or friends where we both take the dog on walks. And, best case scenario, I would only have a dog to perform a specific task e.g on a farm.

It’s so liberating. I can just take my 3ds with me and play some levels, then I’m at work. It doesn’t even take me longer than commuting by car, if I take parking into account. And driving through cities is stressful and hurts the citizens’ health and their mobility.
