Ever used one for honey? You’ll never go back to trying to use anything else.
Why does every commercial depiction of honey involve one of this things? Literally nobody has ever seen one of these in real life

You keep slowly rotating it as you move it from the honey to whatever you’re going to put the honey in so the viscous liquid essentially “orbits” this thing instead of dripping onto your countertop. Then when over the target you stop rotating and let it pour off.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 hours ago
Or you could use a teaspoon.
Slovene@feddit.nl 2 hours ago
Why, when this thing makes it easier? Unless you have a spoon with a round handle.
clif@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
Went to a wedding shower that was nature themed awhile back and the attendance prize was a small jar of local honey with one of these attached. I’ve never used one so I am curious to give it a try.

These are bear butt plugs. Its how they stop themselves from shitting themselves during hibernation

Yeah, prove it! Send us a picture with the honey dipper sticking out your fart hole, or we ain’t buying it!
Diddlydee@feddit.uk 10 hours ago
I have at least 3 of these. They’re hardly rare. I think it’s just you.
Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl 8 hours ago
I’ve wondered the same as OP and never saw one in real life.
Probably it’s a regional thing, like how in some countries (as I recently discovered) they don’t know what a cheese slicer is and just butcher cheese with a knife.
Railcar8095@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
Of course you had to be Dutch. I swear, all my Dutch friends have like 3 of those an a couple of those electric grills with mini pans for melting cheese below
In all fairness, the slicer isn’t even useful for all cheeses. It’s convenient for Edam and similar ones though.

Damn, this guy’s fancy

So once upon a time, you actually got honey at the market replenishing your pot, rather than buying jars in the supermarket.
This thing was always in the pot, and you did not use a spoon to get your honey, it works better than a spoon and you just leave it in the pot.
Today americans probably bleach their jars, spoons and bees, but honey is surprisingly shelf stable, having a pot with a little hole with this little plunger sticking out is fine really.
MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 4 hours ago
bleach their … bees
Yes.
Empricorn@feddit.nl 2 hours ago
I have never tried bleaching my b.
Takapapatapaka@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 7 hours ago
Ooooh it makes so much sense to leave it perpetually in the pot! I never understood why it was a thing, because there was always a bit of honey remaining on it and that felt weird, but now i get it, thank you for explaining.
Quill7513@slrpnk.net 4 hours ago
it’s the easiest tool to use to get the honey out of the jar and into your mug for tea. i got mine at the farmer’s market because local honey is thicker than store honey, but even stores that sell local honey don’t sell these. highly recommend one if you’ve never seen one. it makes making tea so much easier
Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 1 hour ago
You know they have invented the thing called teaspoon, it makes it very easy to get the honey out of the jar and into your mug of tea. Try it and you’ll be amazed. I’m sure you can find it at a some farmers market too.
Quill7513@slrpnk.net 1 hour ago
i have and that’s what i’m comparing against. thank you for your unconstructive input. with the teaspoon you can’t twist it to break a run before putting it in your mug and adding the hot water. so the teaspoon ends up being messier.
also what… did you think i was comparing against? my hands?
some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Y’know they sell honey in squeezable bottles like ketchup and other condiments, right? This stupid wooden barrel on a stick solution seems like a recipe for a sticky mess. Also, do you just leave it in the jar, making it impossible to put the lid back on? Take it out, covered in honey, and wash it for later?
My disdain for bad tools is irrational, I know.
Xella@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
You should have more disdain for that low quality ass honey in a squeeze bottle. You should try local honey, it’ll change your life and then you’ll find yourself buying these dumbass barrels on a stick.
Quill7513@slrpnk.net 1 hour ago
the honey that comes in the squeezable bottles is lower quality and the bottles themselves are wasteful. i’d rather pay a little extra, get honey from a beekeeper, know my local agriculture is being pollinated by a local beekeeper, and deal with a little piece of wood i have to rinse a little bit.
the convenience is distinctly not worth the degradation in all of the things i like about honey
Hootwog@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
Valid points except that squeezable bottle honey ain’t shit so it is worth the extra bother.

fartsparkles@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
We’ve got four different sized ones in our house!
Next they’re going to say they don’t own any wooden butter knives…
grranibal@lemmy.zip 2 hours ago
Like a metal knife with a wooden handle?
TimeNaan@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
You can buy them in every cutlery section in my country. But it’s kind of useless, I’m not sure why this is the design that is associated with honey. A spoon works better.
Diddlydee@feddit.uk 10 hours ago
You can rotate this as it’s dripping to manage the flow due to grooves which you can’t do with a spoon.
TimeNaan@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
And then many more dropa are stuck between the ridges and get wasted.
edwardbear@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
Spoon is made out of metal. Changes the taste of honey.
Thorry@feddit.org 7 hours ago
Really? How does that work? I’ve never heard that before
Katana314@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
I see this design on earwax cleaners. I think the idea is to be useful for retrieving a thick, viscous substance from a tight place. Rather than scooping it, it provides a space designed for the stuff to “get stuck in” the cracks.
Given honey appears in various consistencies, I can see how that would be useful; maybe more for the beekeepers than the consumer.
morgunkorn@discuss.tchncs.de 10 hours ago
it’s sold in every souvenir shop of stuff made with olive tree wood in Greece. and it’s a stupid device, so much honey stays stuck in it after using it, absolutely not worth it
Wolf314159@startrek.website 7 hours ago
You’re supposed to leave it in the jar when not in use.
morgunkorn@discuss.tchncs.de 3 hours ago
okay but my honey jars have a screw on lid, that’s not very practical ^^
Balaquina@lemmy.ca 8 hours ago
I used these all the time as a kid. I haven’t seen one in a few years though.

taxet_@sopuli.xyz 7 hours ago
I guess that works if you use more runny honey but my honey is so stiff that you need to use a hammer and a chisel. I friggin hate honey that is almost liquid, it needs to be more like a rock.
baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 5 hours ago
Is your house really cold, or has the honey crystallized? You can heat up the honey to re-liquefy it, look up how.
Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
Why? They like it that way. Look it up
zakobjoa@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
The only kind I like even more than rock hard honey is the really tangy kind with lots of crunchy little crystals in it.
FosterMolasses@leminal.space 4 hours ago
That’s the good stuff.
derpgon@programming.dev 7 hours ago
I don’t like honey much - the taste, that is. But I use it to sweeten tea or curd (with raspberries or banana, for breakfast)
Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 7 hours ago
I’ve seen them. No advantage over using a spoon or even a knive as long as there’s no cross contamination.
M137@lemmy.world 5 hours ago

I’ve got a couple variations in a drawer. I don’t use a lot of honey so I don’t use them a lot.
Pringles@sopuli.xyz 48 minutes ago
I’ve got 3 of those at home (actually got one as a gift last week) but we don’t use it because the open honey jar attracts ants. So we use spoons. I do like it though.
