It’s me, I’m in this meme. Those are still technically medications, just self-prescribed.
Me this morning

I love Adderall. But I didn’t really feel right until I started using weed. The combination leave me with a blank, calm mind that allows me to focus. You’ll take weed from my cold, dead hands.
infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 1 month ago
I’m unfortunate because while weed is a great disassociative recreation for me and basically a part of my culture, it seriously suppresses my ability to think through complex issues in the way that’s required for the technical work / hobbies I do, while adderal and other stimulant-type meds make me very tense and aggravated. I’ve heard good things about clonadine though, non-stimulant adhd med, I’ve got plans to ask my doc about it.
obvs@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I have an extended-release Ritalin prescription that I take every morning. It’s amazing. Best stuff in the world.
But oh, man, adding an edible 2-3 times a week before bed leaves me SO much more able to function during the week.
Before those two, life was stressful as all hell.
But with those two things, I’m kicking ass and taking names all week long.

weed makes me anxious and panic. why? booze makes me puke. so ya. cheap date, i am.
turtlesareneat@piefed.ca 1 month ago
Actually self medication theory teaches us that some individuals will wind up choosing the correct medication, so yeah.
flandish@lemmy.world 1 month ago
i’ve been on ritalin a while and recently also got rx’d 0.25 xanax for obv reasons. 5 pills a month. i kinda know it helps “de edge” anxiety, but also know it helps sleep. what i have trouble with is a “bad month” or two when i might need more just oddly anxious (ironically) to talk to dr abt it for fear of becoming addicted. :/
whoisearth@lemmy.ca 1 month ago
So glad I grew out of this. I still drink copious amounts of tea but any amount of weed is destructive.
I’ll share something I posted a good decade ago on Reddit.
I used to smoke at least a joint a day sometimes multiple. I was consistently wake and bake outside of work. You know what weed does that no one wants to discuss? It makes you complacent. It sucks your drive to do anything. As a young person that’s a horrible place to be. You are young, you should be taking risks and you should be striving for better.
Zink@programming.dev 1 month ago
I agree with you, and I think weed really helped me even though I’m not using any right now.
Sometimes it’s extremely beneficial to be chemically pushed into a good mood and satisfied with just existing, when otherwise existence just seems to be misery and pain.
But it is not a permanent fix. It’s a band-aid while you find more permanent ways to improve your life. But band-aids can hurt to take off when you’re done with them.
IPeaceInYourFace@lemmy.world 1 month ago
It’s the opposite for me. Weed gives me the motivation to do things.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Same. If I’m in too much pain, the only motivation I have is to fix the pain. You’ll never guess what does that.
architect@thelemmy.club 1 month ago
My people right here. Weed would NOT want me to go to some corporate drone job but, thankfully, that’s not my life.

The weed years are a blur.
To be fair I miss it compared to experiencing the rise of fascism real time.
Unfortunately, weed only sends my anxiety over the top these days.
whoisearth@lemmy.ca 1 month ago
Gotta power through the anxiety lol. I did it so much I became functional even when on it the problem was it sucked away my drive to do anything that amounted to anything I just wanted to smoke more weed and mountain bike with a shitty do nothing job.
I now have 3 kids I adore immensely and a job that I love that pays insanely well. I still keep weed around but I can never bring myself to do it because there’s too much to enjoy in life why dull my senses?
To your experiencing fascism real time. I hear you. For me it’s putting things into perspective. When you look at the world objectively it’s a shit show regardless. Make sure you and those around you are safe and you are capable to survive the coming storm and you’re good. If you find yourself or someone you love on one of their hit lists you take as many of those degenerate fuckers as you can by any means possible.
captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I find weed is like alcohol, if it’s a sometimes thing it’s perfectly fine, but if it’s something you’re doing daily or every time you have a night to relax it’s a problem.
whoisearth@lemmy.ca 1 month ago
Exactly. The danger is using it to escape your life. Life shouldn’t need an escape. If you feel it does you have a larger more difficult conversation you need to have with yourself.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I mean I get you, but if I don’t smoke my weed my gut shits out everything. Like, things it shouldn’t be shitting out. Five different doctors argued with me to start smoking weed before I started (three of them doctors I was paying, two that I am just friends with), and now I ain’t stopping.
andros_rex@lemmy.world 1 month ago
It makes you complacent.
Sometimes that’s good.
I quit for a while to try to get a government job. My dream job. They offered, then rescinded because of trans/Trump’s EO.
Now I don’t give a fuck. I’m sober for work, but otherwise when I’m home I’m high.
Like I can’t do anything about climate change/the fact that the president is a rapist, but I can get stoned, enjoy food that feels like it’s making love to my taste buds, make art that my fucked up brain tells me is a masterpiece and have mind blowing sex that means I don’t have to engage with conscious thought at all.
Zink@programming.dev 1 month ago
I’m a medicated ADHDer and I treat coffee like just yet another medication.
I was never a coffee drinker (or medicated in general) until my 40s. But now I literally prepare myself a cup of coffee in the morning and at lunch time, the same times I take my adderall. The combination is working great, even if it doesn’t fix everything.
WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 month ago
I just quit my coffee, and roughing it out, so that the psych can see me in my true state.
Used to gulp down more coffee than water.

1 month for me. Not sure if I’ll stick or just reduce, been looking for a new job so I figured I’d get it out of my system. Honestly don’t feel much different, I find reading a little harder to stick to.
TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 1 month ago
The dose makes the poison. Weed is not a panacea but it sure as hell isn’t the devil. If you are getting F’d up you need to cut back the dose or switch to edibles; you don’t get as functionally high, but it’s more intense and lasts longer. Also know your weed Indicas are more of a “body high” (Sleepy, pain reduction, relaxation, “vibes”) where as Sativas are more of a “mental high” (mental “buzz,” creativity, giggles, anxiety reduction) get a good hybrid that focuses more on the thing you want to fix. If you are in a funk, a Sativa dominant strain is what you need, if you are burnt out, you need an indica dominant one.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Terpenes are where the health effects are, but they don’t line up neatly with the indica / sativa dichotomy. I love a good hybrid with limonene and pinene but it’s kind of hard to find both in the same flower out here
TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 1 month ago
we really need to properly decriminalize so we can study these compounds. There was a study using some naturally derived psychotropics done in Brazil some years ago that showed promising benefits in reducing the mechanisms that activate PTSD triggers, for instance, but nothing ever really came of it, because of stigma surrounding the “recreational” uses.
Basically the study found that if you take a psychotropic shortly after the traumatizing event, it disrupts the amygdala’s ability to parse and store the memory in a way that becomes malignant. This makes it FAR easier to process the event through therapy, and outcomes were greatly improved.
architect@thelemmy.club 1 month ago
As a long time smoker, I can not understand how people think taking edibles is the answer to getting too high smoking. Edibles will fuck you up. I smoke A LOT and a 10mg gummy will destroy me. My experience is the exact opposite of your recommendations. I’d tell a new person to hit a vape a couple of times and relax.
TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 1 month ago
TBF, I have a rather high tolerance because I was dropping 4 Zenias every 3 hours just to feel a nice buzz. I had a medical grade brownie once and that was a sweet spot.
_fryerDan@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
i switched my coffee for a B complex gummy in the AM and a B12+D after lunch. It’s been working gangbusters for my mood. Probably too much B vitamins but idgaf
Lupus108@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Check whats in you B complex, if B6 is a high dosage you should check in with your doctor, prolonged intake of high B6 doses can cause minor nerve damage. While you’re at it let them check your potassium levels, too much Vitamin D can lead to drastic Potassium levels which can cause health problems. At least in Germany the blood work for both is about 25€ and you tune your dose to what’s safe :)
It’s probably safe but some people metabolize those vitamins differently and the tests are quick and simple.
DokPsy@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I wish I lived in a developed nation where I could just “go get blood work done” for a nominal fee or be able to afford to care about long term effects instead of surviving day to day. Not sarcastic, I legit wish that
runner_g@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
vitamin b is water soluble so any excess is just getting peed out, so you’re safe there. the ones you gotta look out for are a, d, and e. those are all fat should’ve and can build up inside you body and eventually cause issues
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Huh. I do a B12 (missing the absorbtive parts) every other day and it’s not that noticeable now that my b levels are right. I wonder if I take a bit more…

Thx mate.

So, it’s weird but coffee just runs through my gut. Espresso is what wakes me up. I can’t explain it. If I use the aeropress, it’s concentrated enough.

Coffee makes me sleepy. Weed makes me anxious. Focalin is like walking through a peaceful meadow with a god holding my hand and a muse whispering in my ear.
Jarix@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Sorry I couldn’t find it, but caffeine and coffee can have opposite effects on a person. Iirc caffeine making you sleepy is a symptom of ADHD or autism(it could be something else entirely, it was a long time ago I read the article) but was a very strong indicator of the thing in the article. This assumes it wasn’t a junk article, the acidity of the coffee apparently can have an effect on your metabolism depending on what else you put in it. Cinnamon apparently had a noticeable effect on the results.
Again apologies for not being able to locate it, but Ill update this if I do manage to find the one I remember. It was pre covid when I read it if that matters

In my late 40s, hippie speed balls every morning. Bad(?) habit I picked up (again) within the past five years. Like a few other have said, it really levels me out, giving me the ability to fine tune my focus first thing in the morning. The absurdities at work nearly require marijuana consumption. Being a midday slug has been the only downside.
Bakkoda@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I’m 43 and TIL about a hippy speedball. I’ve been doing this shit for over half my life lol.
I was a little bummed to see so much half tobacco/half marijuana when i went to Amsterdam this spring. My lungs weren’t thrilled but the nicotine was surprisingly nice especially after day drinking and walking literally all day.
peteypete420@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
I dont understand how my coworkers deal with the public without a wake and bake. Now given, not all of them are as nice to the customers as I am, but dam. Id have to kill someone if I was just rawdogging this job 5 days a week.
pitiable_sandwich540@feddit.org 1 month ago
Ah yes, the good ol’ hippie speedball. Was fun while it lasted but I’m glad I quit. Looking back, it didn’t really make my ADD any easyier to handle, tbh. Just gave me a reward to focus on to do the mundane shit…

They just take too long, but I like edibles.
Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
Honestly both are fine as long as you stay within or below the average healthy limits (roughly 320mg/day for caffeine, weed might be less tested in that regard).
Just know your limits and make sure you have water with you.
tetris11@feddit.uk 1 month ago
