I’ve not seen or played Expedition 33 but that’s hilarious.
If it were up to people the entire DMC series, Zelda series, all metroidvanias, any sort of action RPG, and any game where you fight a boss would be a soulslike game. It’s goofy.
It reminds me of the metal genre. It was rock, then punk, then grunge and slowly all of that became lumped into a metal genre of some sort and now any music that is remotely heavy is metal-something completely washing out the foundation that it was built upon.
Legend of Zelda and Metroid were the classic, find an item to beat the next boss/puzzle game. Shadow if Colossus, Super Mario RPG, hell even the resident evil games all offered things that lead up to the soulslike genre. Nobody is gonna convince me to use that term as a serious way to describe a game. It’s a very specific game type.

That’s also the third game. I tried Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 and they both felt pretty much roll, jump and smack em with a stick.
I’m thinking Nioh, Bloodborne, Sekiro, stuff like that.
I also think the genre itself has become sort of weird where people will describe everything from Shovel Knight to Titan Souls to Jedi Fallen Order as soulslike which is insane in my opinion. I guess because you fight bosses in them or roll in some of them? I dunno. It has somehow absorbed all hack and slash, boss rush, metroidvania games to be labeled “soulslike”. Which is insane to me.

I think they’d benefit taking a note from the witcher but not as linear.
For instance spirit/ghost creatures have them be susceptible to salt, silver, iron, holy water and a specific wood like holly. None are required to kill it, some have advantages over others or affect certain spirits more.
Maybe then I could be sneaky and have rare wood arrows with silver tips and eliminate from afar, I could be full rogue and sneak attack with blessed iron daggers, or just a big man with a plain sword and brute force my way through.
I think if you slapped Hatsune Miku on a dark souls screen and have her dancing going “jump!, roll!, duck!” People would realize it’s not as much of a skill game as they thought.

That usually requires you to play the game in a traditional way first to learn/acquire that information and/or bang your skull repeatedly against a boss that feels like bullshit because you failed to dodge one single ability. It’s just not my schtick.

Not the original commenter but I do feel the same. I dislike souls games. Although I did enjoy sekiro and made it to the stupid lightning samurai guy.
The problem with souls-like games for me is the combat doesn’t feel good for the challenge and I believe you can see this in high tier players lazily dodging attacks.
The game isn’t about skill and strategy. It’s timing and flat experience to kill some bosses you just gotta fight them 600 times and learn the attacks patterns which to me feels mentally exhausting and frustrating. It’s like a glorified DDR game with swords. I have to do the right combos to win, some strategies exist sure but at the end of the day it’s DDR.
The big argument everyone has is “mechanics vs numbers” thinking mechanics is the true skill side but mechanics isn’t just what you do with a controller, it’s also what the game allows you to do.
Too many games equate difficulty with time sink. I want a game that I can be smart and play the numbers OR be skilled and play the mechanics or both. Souls games don’t offer that, they’re peg legged

No we did not.
Computers gave us calculators and suddenly we had rockets. Then we made them smaller and went into space. They became prevalent and we got automation. They connected and we got the Internet.
All of that merged together and made something that became very good at making models of anything with strong predictive capabilities because it can now run massive computing sequences logging immense variables regular people and even advanced computers before could not. You get our ability to understand protein folding, human behavior, economics and aspects of geometry we couldn’t.
Are you expecting AI and then suddenly a bunch of change? The industrial revolution started in the mid 1700s, it wasn’t until over 100 years later did we have full on industrial style warfare and electricity use became more common in everyday use(still to this day not everywhere has electricity). The understanding of nuclear energy started at the break of the 20th century but it wasn’t until 60/70 years later that it was common.
AI as a breakthrough tech only really started 16 years ago and already it’s established itself as a fledgling key tech. I’ll bet you $500 the majority of technological advancement ahead of us will be tied to AI - it has already impacted how we diagnose people, accelerating understanding of drugs through it’s ability to understand protein folding and drug discovery. It’s given scientists the ability to expand our visual understanding of the universe and weather with it’s predictive capabilities, and it’s also threatening to advance automation to an insane level where we might have actually decent robots to perform human tasks.
Look at the combine harvester for instance. Almost 200 years old, came from the industrial revolution, took teams of animals to pull, advancements allowed it to be fueled with oil, then the introduction of computers made it manage itself, satellites allowed more precise control, now it’s reaching a point where it can even monitor the health of the field for you and require such a minor amount of human interaction compared to it’s original introduction. That’s fucking insane. We might have a means to grow food that require almost no human involvement.
You’re being intentionally obtuse over this because I think you just don’t like the tech.

Whether people want to admit it or not. AI will be the thing that takes the next step in most areas of influence. It’s literally the next industrial or atomic revolution. Just because there is an AI bubble and the companies around it are doing all they can to bail out the water of a sinking ship doesn’t make the actual tech itself bad or stupid.
That said all systems are corrupt. This whole capitalism vs socialism shit just exposes anyone who thinks that way as an idiot. It’s not red vs blue , it’s not an is or isn’t sort of thing.
