We usually think in linguistic concepts even when reading a book, one of the most difficult things to do with a student when they are learning drawing is teaching them to really see instead of thinking of linguistic traits. I have aphantasia and it is difficult for me to recall visual traits so instead i focus on visual recipes, or construction while drawing. It is difficult for me to recall faces for example but if i reduce a face to geometric shapes and proportions and do a lot of trial and error so i can approximate a face I’ve seen.
So when reading is not that I am seeing things, but i am making a conceptual map, an abstraction. Kinda like how dreams are like stories we tell ourselves to the point they might seem like intangible images. Sometimes I feel my brain relate stuff i read to things i’ve already seen, or builds some conceptual bridge between known concepts to unknown ones.
But reading is also a practice on itself different than hearing. Language has aesthetics, rhythm character. I feel i learn more about the aesthetic beauty of language by reading it on the page than hearing it on an audio book because it forces me to build that bridge between my horizon of understanding and the authors’.
This is especially true for authors that have an entirely different background than me because to understand them i need to read slower and research. Something that audio books doesn’t allow with it’s predisposed presentation.

- Comment on Drop your unpopular opinions here because c/unpopularopinions is filled with popular opinions 1 week ago:
To be honest i like anime because how comfortable it is with being shit and outrageous and i love to hate watch stuff like kingdoms of ruin simply to marvel at how bad it can get. Also i feel stuff like Baki loops back into being so bad it’s good. I can’t get over the fact that the last season finale was a feud with his martial art master dad about being served imaginary dinner that escalated to Baki being used as a human nunchuck in a public brawl.
No western writer would commit to that kind of madness.

velvet paper; It also feels deliciously buttery dragging a dry pastel over it or a very soft vine charcoal.

- Comment on Dead Space creator Glen Schofield is retiring after 35 years 5 weeks ago:
He had two good dead space games under his arm but i always felt that what this team’s legacy to gaming was more about seamless ui and diagetic interface design.
Back in the day the dead space games had the common criticism of mistaking being loud and in your face with being horror, and over reliying on “shooting galleries” of respawning enemies. The callisto protocol ran with these flaws and made them worse to the point where in late levels progression felt choppy and repetitive because you just knew there was another closed space with monsters spawning from vents around the corner that ruined the atmosphere.
I always wanted to like their games, hell i remember enjoying dead space 2 even if the overall game was very forgettable as a horror fan. It kind of makes sense that this guy sees promise in generstive AI because a lot of the creative decisions and writing of his games feel lacking substance.
- Comment on After laying off thousands, Ubisoft says losing "key talents and skills" is a big danger for the company 5 weeks ago:
I feel you can rush through the game in 15-30 hours and get most of the story. I’m not a completionist in any way but getting most of the dungeons and upgrades and beating some hidden bosses took me about 60 hours. I also didn’t feel the run time at all; The fighting system can be a lot of fun and there is always an interesting dungeon mechanic or twist on an old boss around the corner.

I read somewhere that cats see grooming another cat as domineering behavior. So cats are basically telling you what to do and to get a better job/get your shit together

I played all the 16 bit Phantasy star games when i was a kid. Phantasy star 3 is considered to be the black sheep of the series but it is tje one that stuck with me the most, something about the music and atmosphere, and odd take on scifi fantasy it portrays.
