The actual ‘grown up’ take.
stickyprimer@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Absolutely. I would say that not liking onions is a bit of an illusion though. They really are in everything and are so elemental to cooking. I think if people understood this better they wouldn’t fear onions so much. Sometimes fear of onions is also part of a generalized “zero seasoning” palette common among some older white Americans, where even black pepper is considered “spicy” and most food is totally flavorless and usually cooked to a pulp. It’s not about growing up… this palette is just missing out on so much happiness in the world. Being just a tiny bit brave with food is a wonderful decision to make in life.
kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 2 weeks ago
It is mostly a texture thing for me, and I doubt I am the only one. I do not mind the taste that much, if it is onion powder. But even tiny chunks of cooked onions make me gag when they crunch on your teeth. Absolutely disgusting. If I have to eat something with onions, I will pick out the pieces, no matter how tiny they are.
(Yes, I am autistic.)

Is his name Carm in the show because he’s caramelizing from first episode to last, and finally becomes the onion we all love?
I am halfway through s4 and it’s boring so I stopped watching.
BigDiction@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Yes, you can’t rush carmelized onions

You should try: Growing the hell up

Seppo@sopuli.xyz 2 weeks ago
Nah. I’ll judge the fuck out of dudes pushing 40 who still can’t cook anything other than instant ramen.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I would agree, but my sil used to only eat chicken nuggets and canned green beans. In their family growing up, food was not for enjoyment, it was strictly for calories. Both her husband and I have been working on expanding her palate (we got her hooked on gyro a few years back. That was a happy moment for her family).
We don’t and didn’t judge her, we just wanted her to be able to enjoy nicer meals. Her husband is a great cook, so he’s gotten to vicariously experience amazing foods for the first time again. I would be envious, but I get this experience with my nieces and nephews (only four of them have parents who can cook well). It’s a great feeling, sharing delicious foods with loved ones, and also rubbing in your siblings’ faces that their kids aren’t picky when you cook for them.
wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
We don’t and didn’t judge her
So, this is an entirely separate case from the OP, then.
mabeledo@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I judge people for what they eat every time I put a foot in a Target.
Let’s normalize shaming adults who eat like five year olds.

This is my wife… I then had to explain to her multiple times that yes you do like onions and also garlic. I know this because over 90% of the things I cook include one or the other or both!
Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 weeks ago
Tbf that’s totally diffent, it’s just a tiny bit, it’s like saying that if you like ketchup you also should like tomatoes, it’s not the same
SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Are you married to my wife? Are we a throuple now?
kuberoot@discuss.tchncs.de 2 weeks ago
As a person that generally dislikes onions, it’s different - I’m not a fan of onion flavor and don’t like the texture, but I know it can positively contribute to a dish for me, primarily if it’s not overly prominent.
It’s like seasoning, eating some seasoning alone might make it taste bad, you might dislike dishes that use it as a main flavor, but if it’s just a small component of a dish it might be a good thing. I haven’t had marmite, but from what I’ve seen it seems kinda like that, very strong offputting flavor that complements other things very well.
Viceversa@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
That’s dishonest.
mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
yes, it’s dishonest of her to say that she doesn’t like them, when she clearly does like them as an ingredient
nobody said he was hiding the ingredients from her, grow the fuck up
SirCosmoBluebeard@piefed.world 2 weeks ago
For me it’s primarily the texture. I do like the flavor of onion as long as it’s not overpowering. Cooked or not, biting into onion is like nails on a chalkboard but on my teeth. If it’s chopped up small enough or powdered I don’t have a problem. When my wife makes food with bigger pieces of onion, she makes them big enough that I can pick out.
For a long time, though, I would just say I don’t like onion and try to avoid it altogether.
fritobugger2017@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I love onions but OP needs to fuck right off with dictating how other folks should deal with food.

Tikiporch@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Onions have their place, and it’s diced so fine they’re practically molecular.
Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Agree. Excellent flavor. Gawdawful texture.
BigDiction@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Raw, carmelized, fried, pickled, grilled.
There’s so many ways to eat onions and they all taste different. Someone who just ‘doesn’t like onions’ is like someone not liking potatoes…which version and what do you not like??
mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I love onions in stew, or in gumbo or jambalaya - some place where I can’t see 'em, and certainly don’t have to chew through them.
otherwise fuck onions lol
Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
Onion powder ftw
YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
Seriously, pre caramelized actually! But I will add chopped onion too. Also garlic powder, and actual garlic. They taste different and both are good.
kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Just get onion powder, dude. Save yourself the tears and trouble.
Tikiporch@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
It’s not the same, and deep in your heart you know that, too.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
when I make salsa I just throw the tomato, peppers, onion, tomatillo, cilantro, coleslaw, and a drip of lime juice in the food processor and let it chop for me.

mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago

have you tried growing up yet?
itsjustachairmary@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Unfortunately they died at the age of 5 due to a lack of onions
Oppopity@lemmy.ml 2 weeks ago
I agree that it’s dumb because people have their preferences but comparing not liking someone to literally being incapable of consuming it is a bit much.
kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I have a gag reflex when eating onions (and a couple other random things). It’s not a preference. My body physically rejects it.
itsjustachairmary@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I don’t like fish. I have tried salmon, cod, tuna, sardines and a couple others MULTIPLE TIMES and my brains just refuse to accept any and all of it. I have tried it as a filet, in salads, on bread, with onions, with whatever else in all sorts of dishes
Doesn’t matter. Brains go ‘nope’. I’ll keep trying it I guess until my brains no longer try to convince me fish are literal poison.
french snickering
kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I’m not fish averse, but my wife is. I have managed to make one fish she likes. Take a frozen Mahi Mahi filet, preheat air fryer to 400F, rub the filet with a bit of oil, and season with garlic salt, bit of black pepper, and a pinch of crushed red pepper. Place on the airfryer (still frozen) for 14 minutes, flipping halfway through. It should end up slighty crispy on the edges, moist and flaky inside. Finish with lemon (it’s essential).
Mahi mahi is the least fishy fishy out there. It still has a fish texture, but tastes like meat. Not dissimilar to chicken.
But also, it’s perfectly okay to not like something. Don’t waste your money unless you really want to try it.
Vibi@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 weeks ago
Fructan sensitivity 🥲 I appreciate the flavor they add, buuut don’t appreciate how they digest in my body. I carry food enzymes with me when I’m out though- kind of hard to avoid when I’m not the one cooking. I do want to try adding them to my oil infusions sometime!

I didn’t like onions as a kid, turns out my mother just sucks at cooking.
ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 2 weeks ago
I always liked onions in things. In fact I liked all things kids were supposed to hate… Except for eggplant. I just don’t like eggplant.
Thorry@feddit.org 2 weeks ago
Fuck you asshole, I love onions, but I’m allergic. After a major incident I have learnt to avoid them completely. Luckily this seems like a common enough thing that onion free versions of stuff are usually available.
CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 2 weeks ago
Can confirm. Didn’t like onions as a kid, always thought they were useless and added no flavor to a dish. Got older, learned a bit more about how to cook them and now I like putting onions in things.
Grostleton@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
I have a minor allergy to onions and can only eat them without suffering if they’re caramelized or otherwise thoroughly cooked.
KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I know the cilantro example is famous, but as a super taster and having other people with the gene onions are very divisive. For me, anything more than a hint is overpoweringly disgusting and the idea of actually biting into one directly fills me with dread.
Onion powder and garlic powder are both very preferable to the actual substance taste wise.
If you know someone in your life that really likes diet soda and other artificially sweetened things and even prefers it to the regular, they just might be a super taster.
If you know someone that finds wine, beer, tea and coffee horrifically bitter to the point that they can’t even understand how you enjoy it. They may also be a super taster.
If you know someone that complains Seltzer’s like white claw and lacroix are absurdly bitter and completely disgusting. That is likely because they can taste a profile called bitter two, which is prevalent in these things because they are a super taster.
I know nobody will read this and learn to quit bitching at people about what they like, but I figured I’d at least try.
daggermoon@piefed.world 2 weeks ago
Fuck onions and fuck god.
frozenfoxx@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Tell that to my gut. You get onions in there, mushrooms, etc I’ll be absolutely crippled with cramps, gas, and worse.
I’m glad people love onions. I don’t even mind the taste. But you know what I like more? NOT being stuck in agony on the toilet for hours.

Remember kids: all shaming of “picky” eating is just socially acceptable ableism, and you should be fucking ashamed of yourself.
melfie@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
Children often just want sweets and unhealthy snacks, and it’s up to adults to make sure they get the nutrition their little bodies require. If a grown ass adult decides they don’t want to eat something, though, they likely have tried it and their reasons for avoiding it. It’s really nobody else’s damned business.

As soon as a feel that slimey texture in my mouth I gag
Teknikal@anarchist.nexus 2 weeks ago

Love onions, but they give me migraines
mechoman444@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I’m 40 and I hate just about everything about onions. I can’t stand the taste the smell the texture especially.
The thing I have to grow up about is that there can’t be food without them there would be no flavor. So unfortunate… I love food and I hate onions.
Bieren@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
You know what. I should. I should grow up. I already love onions. But this sends a message.

cattywampas@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
If you don’t like onions you should try cooking them in butter on low heat for 30-45 minutes until they’re a deep amber and mixing them with sour cream, a bit of mayo, salt and pepper, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Boom, caramelized onion dip.

This is genuinely good culinary advice. Thank you for sharing. I may try it soon.
That said, you bastard! You took all the delicious mustard gas tingle out of the onion! Poor ex-delicious onions.
ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 2 weeks ago
Yeah. Raw onions are just about the only food ingredient I absolutely can’t stand to eat. But I love sauteed onions. I work at a fire house and do a lot of the cooking on shift. If anyone bitches about a pack of onions, I tell them I’ll add onions at the same time I add Habaneros. I love crazy hot stuff, but contrary to popular firefighter belief, most of the guys are huge weenies when it comes to spicy.
Fawkes@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
Same actually. But I later discovered the reason why I don’t like raw onions is because I have an allergy that gives me migraines when I eat them. Cooking them is fine and delicious though.
But yeah, used to be teased incessantly by family for being “Picky.”
teslekova@lemmy.ml 2 weeks ago
Why do I keep seeing removed instead of some words? If anyone removed about a pack of onions?
webhead@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I used to be that way. I think you’ll eventually find that you like them. Not enough to take a bite out of a raw onion but being cool with them on a burger at least. Sometimes stuff like this just clicks for me as I get older. No idea why lol.
goosehorse@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
You probably know this since you work in a kitchen, but a buddy recently taught me that the trick for taking the edge off raw onion—e.g. to put on a salad or burger—is to soak the slices in cold water for a few minutes. Keeps the sweetness and flavor, but seriously reduces the sulfuric burn!
LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Yeah, anyone eating cold red onions can suck a dick. But I’ll suck a dick for a good onion dip.
iamericandre@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
You never had raw onions on a sangwich? Red onion especially, very tasty raw.
RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 2 weeks ago
I’d be sucking dick more if it tasted like raw onion.
Diddlydee@feddit.uk 2 weeks ago
Screw red onions. White onions rule.
socsa@piefed.social 2 weeks ago
Just biting into a raw onion by itself is psychopath behavior but you gotta have raw onions on a proper Italian sub.
Rinox@feddit.it 2 weeks ago
Try putting those red onion in water and vinegar (with a pinch of salt and sugar). They’ll become a deep red/purple and loose all acidity, gaining a sweet and vinegary taste. You can keep them in there for quite a long time too if done correctly
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Huh, we just call that onion dip here
