I voted against him. Was my vote illegal? Am I going to jail?
Valthorn@feddit.nu 1 month ago
About 6 million fewer votes for Trump than last election, which is good, but it doesn’t matter since there are 18 million fewer votes for Harris than for Biden last election! Where were those 18 million people? It can’t be that all of them are in the “I don’t vote for genocide” camp. What happened?
It’s never been clearer that not voting gives the election to the Republicans.
Rolder@reddthat.com 1 month ago
It’s very strange to me that turnout is lower, purely because when I went out to vote there was a line goin out the building, which I have never seen before in my area
ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Maybe sexism and racism are not isolated to the right wing, possibly a lot more in the centre than assumed. Maybe just enough in certain demos to affect turnout.
dingus@lemmy.world 1 month ago
It’s weird because I even noticed this among liberals. The presidential candidates are always referred to by last name. But both times a woman tried to run, people referred to her as her first name whether you are conservative or liberal or what have you. I have found it a bit disrespectful tbh, and all sides have been guilty of this. The US will never elect a female president, let alone a female president of color. It’s bizarre.
HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Not all have been counted. That’s where they are. Not yet counted
doingthestuff@lemy.lol 1 month ago
They just called Wisconsin for Trump which puts him over 270.
doingthestuff@lemy.lol 1 month ago
If Biden hadn’t insisted on running despite his declining mental state, she wouldn’t have won a primary, not very likely anyway. She is uninspiring and she carries the baggage of the struggling/non-existent middle class, housing market, 12 million border crossings etc.
jj4211@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I don’t know what the final turnout figures will be, but if it is a lower turnout, I can think of a few: -2020 was the easiest year to mail in a ballot ever, and it got harder again as states reinstated various difficulties with mail in ballots. -So many people didn’t have to go into work in 2020, they had more flexibility to vote however they needed to do it.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine explicitly called to boycott both candidates.
“Oh no, 18 million people stopped voting the Dems! Surely it’s the voter’s fault, not democrats being genocidal ghouls who can’t offer a shred of progressiveness!”
djsoren19@yiffit.net 1 month ago
The honest truth is that the Harris/Walz campaign did not motivate their voter base. People were talking about doing fucking vote swaps with people in swing states because they didn’t want to vote for Harris.
I have no idea what the fuck the whole “courting the right” angle was, but it seems to have failed. Maybe it was the stance on Gaza, maybe it was the stance on immigration, maybe it was just feeling spurned by the party for caring about alot of issues like trans rights Harris left to the wayside while campaigning, but it didn’t motivate people to cut through the bullshit and go to the polls.
Meanwhile, Trump stayed in the news 24/7, constantly doubling down on his rhetoric, and his voters mostly all turned out again.
TheObviousSolution@lemm.ee 1 month ago
When Trump was first elected, it made me realize how stupid most of the US is. The results of this election were not surprising, I even linked to the sort of self-serving articles that preceded just before Hillary-Trump’s elections to people who were doing the same in this election. At least in this election, it’s sort of like Israel, they are leaving no doubt about who they support. I don’t even care if Kamala gets the popular vote, most criticize the electoral college word only and refuse to consider gerrymandering as electoral fraud, leading to it occurring in greater and newer ways this election.
drmoose@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Why are americans so stupid and yet manage to export so much smart stuff from tech to podcasts to scientists. Is it some sort of dystopia where 1% rules, 20% live in a bubble and 79% are just brain dead idiots?
TheObviousSolution@lemm.ee 1 month ago
Why do people from Europe go and build monuments and luxury in Saudi Arabia?
Money. Same answer in the US.
The US is an oligarchy, as attested to by this Oxford study. To answer your question, mostly yes, hence places like “Silicon Valley” and institutions like the electoral college.
jimrob4@midwest.social 1 month ago
Yes.
Then there’s us smart ones who see what’s going on, but we’re outnumbered by idiots.
funkajunk@lemm.ee 1 month ago
I fear you may have hit the nail on the head
AA5B@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Gerrymandering is clearly electoral fraud, but
- it’s not black and white. There’s no clear line between fraud and good
- the people benefiting the fraud are the ones in control of it
- gerrymandering does not affect presidential or senate elections

I am fucking gutted, I am so sad and angry and I don’t know what to do. I am overall a happy and positive person and believe in humanity but this win feels like it’s stripping me of a piece of that and I hate that! I hate that I feel so much hate right now, it’s exactly what I preach against, yet here I am. I can’t believe this is happening

Ikr… I don’t even own a car, I walk to work, take the MRT everywhere etc. and the Americans are electing a president who says “Drill baby, drill”. I’m not an American, but it will affect us all… I live in Taiwan now and I’m fucking afraid of what his presidency will do to the geopolitical balance with China.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I’m essentially an atheist too (I don’t even give it a label for myself because god and religion are just not a part of my life, and I don’t need them to be). And yet somehow I feel I have exponentially more compassion and value of morality than a large swath of these people voting in a monster, acting under the guise of being “good Christians”. Maybe I’m delusional, maybe I’m the one missing something, I don’t know. I still believe in humanity, but man I’m just sad right now. Anywho, I’ll take all the prayers and positive energy for everyone that I can get right now, so thank you

Fuck. I hope Canada has some open slots for immigrants.
iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Canada has an increasing anti immigrant sentiment right now. They’ve announced big cut backs to the number of immigrants allowed. Furthermore, moving to another country is difficult and expensive. It’s not a realistic option for most people.
gerbler@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Tbh most of the ire aimed at immigrants here is specifically targeted to either Indian or Ukrainian migrants. Infrastructure is genuinely buckling under the weight of migration but it’s a case of too little investment and not entirely the result of immigration.
I can say as a white, western immigrant to Canada that I’ve never had anyone complain about my immigration however I’ve had locals complain about immigration to me forgetting that I am indeed one of the immies.

Trump is not going to create a better economy. We’re gonna go into a recession and he’s going to blame it on democrats and COVID restrictions.
He’s going to increase immigration, lower wages due to cheap labor, and cause wages to go down. He said this and the retards that live in rural America think he’s going to benefit them. He’s going to reduce the power of Unions.

This is going to have a chilling effect on democracy, and an energizing effect on fascism, worldwide. The movement to try to limit climate change is now dead and buried, worldwide. There is no part of the world that is safe from the effects of this.
MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 1 month ago
I have a sad feeling the rest of the world feels the same way.
I’m at the point where I want to leave these borders. I want to go somewhere relatively quiet and developed that has worker’s rights and isn’t some major player in the game of global domination.
I’d respect my new home and integrate and do my best to get along with my new neighbors.
But I’m pretty sure we’re stuck here to endure this madness.
The rich have already departed though. So you’ll probably end up with less humble American refugees and more pompous real-estate moguls. And for that, I’m sorry.
MisterFrog@lemmy.world 1 month ago

Are you surprised that most people are just dumb as bricks?
Kcap@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I heard a lot of commentary about the price of eggs tonight. I live in San Diego, America’s most expensive city. I’ve seen at some major chains a dozen eggs in the $6 - $9 range. Most stores I’ve seen them around $4 or $5 bucks a dozen. I also purchased a dozen yesterday for $2.79, and that was through Doordash even. So like, I call bullshit. Americans are dumb and too lazy to shop around. The gas station closest my house is $5.80 according to Google just now, but I filled up last night about 5 miles away with cash for $3.99. So infuriating that lack of effort or stupidity is likely what drove Trump back into office.
porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 1 month ago
Yeah the thing is the average trump supporter will be hurt less than everyone else (and that’s the whole point)
jubilationtcornpone@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Oh, no. They will be hurt the same as everyone else but The Donald will just tell them that it’s the Democrats/immigrants/gay people’s/critical race theory’s fault and they will believe him because having someone else to blame for their problems is a lot easier than fixing their problems.
teamevil@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Hahahaha no they fucking won’t … they’re just too goddamn gullible to blame spurious sources, like liberal policies that are fucking them with taxes…not the trillions of tax gifts given to the billionaires the fucking moron represents.
The supporters will continue to be ignorant, stupid and blame all of their problems on liberals, instead of the 1% absolutely raking their ignorant asses over the coals
We’re fucked, the supporters are fucked too but they’re too stupid to know the leopards will eat their face too.
Mobiuthuselah@lemm.ee 1 month ago
We all know that’s not true. He hates his supporters. He just didn’t realize the first time through that they were trashy and ::gasp:: poor.
