Reflecting pool between Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument in Washington D.C. in the gal’dang U S of A.
Last month it was drained to be painted with a blue swimming pool liner.
Because that’s what you do when you’re losing another war in Asia.

I think it’s the wading pool outside the Lincoln memorial.

“Trump said he made the pool a priority after an unnamed friend of his visiting from Germany called it “filthy, disgusting … not representative of the country.”
Sounds pretty representative to me.

I’m laughing because I grew up in the ghetto and I saw plenty houses painted in both this color and a few in this manner. My mom would always say “free paint!”

PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 2 days ago
This is the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. You may have seen it in movies like Forrest Gump.
Trump decided to paint it blue like a swimming pool and the job looks to be going bad.
Trump personally chose the color, contractors without asking anyone really or going through the proper channels like getting approval from congress and input from the public.
In the years to come, the blue pool will mark the time during which Trump was the president of the USA. Its visitors will look down upon their reflection and see blue, as another reminder they were the ones who elected him.ICastFist@programming.dev 1 day ago
I’m willing to bet the water was sold to an AI datacenter and won’t be refilled, thus why its being painted blue, so it can fake being full of water

He got 7 million to do this job. He’ll probably do a half ass job and spend half (if that) to do the actual work.
In 2 months people will forget about this and that dude can basically retire.

Why are they so bad at this? This isn’t rocket science…
A child could do this.
RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 2 days ago
A child is doing this. A child surrounded by people who all kick his commands down the ladder, each person down the rung knowing even less how to do their job right than the Orange Twitler at the top. So by the time it gets to the last person who sends it it’s just: use some leftover blue paint they found in some warehouse from the 1980s and pay some trump crony contractor a crapload of money to hire another contractor who will be lucky to be paid to do the shitty painting job.
Shindo66@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Its so much harder than you think. This would take a team of about 20 guys a month to do right. He got some little company for maralago to do it. He probably flew them up and got them hotel rooms and tours and everything. They just started putting blue paint down. That is concrete that has been under water for decades.
The process: Power wash the entire pool with high pressure for about a week Have professional concrete guys patch any holes Vacuum up any particulate Seal with two coats of concrete primer tinted blue rated to be under water Clean the whole surface again to ensure there arent loose particles anywhere by thoroughly vacuuming again Then two coats of the blue topcoat
It would take at least a month and the guys they got to do it just know how to do smaller swimming pools that dont need as much prep and they are “ccommercial” work, which usually means its done as cheaply as possible.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk

When all you know is grifting, you can’t just pivot to actually bidding out and completing large and expensive projects.
It goes entirely against his nature.

I’m thinking, since it is only cleaned once a year, paint color will be irrelevant after a week or soof algae growth.
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 2 days ago
Isn’t part of the purpose of the paint to be algae resistant?
fizzle@quokk.au 2 days ago
The paint might be but… it’s an outdoor pool with a huge surface area where ducks live. Previously the bottom was grey duck-pond-sludge color so you couldn’t see that it was full of grey duck pond sludge.
That is to say, the paint might be algae resistant but the shit that will be all over it will not be algae resistant.

Any contractors or painters or swimming pool people care to comment?
I suck at home repair – can’t tell if this is normal, crappy, or masterful
SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 days ago
Well the main takeaway is that like so many things, Trump heard “pool” and he thinks “swimming pool” because he’s a fucking idiot. So he thinks it’s supposed to be like a national swimming pool, and wants it painted so people are more likely to use it or who the fuck knows.
Real answer: Corruption, money laundering, and bad taste combined
Prove_your_argument@piefed.social 2 days ago
It’s his contractors. They’ll do a bunch of free private work by charging 10x+ for this.
Quid pro quo / corruption per usual.

f314@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Is it Zima blue?
Jokes aside, this says so much about the way Trump sees the world. It’s a pool, so it must look like a swimming pool because that’s all he knows.
fizzle@quokk.au 2 days ago
Not trying to defend Trump but I don’t think that’s necessarily what’s going on.
Someone linked an article. The thing has cost heaps of money to maintain over the last hundred years. It leaks so bad it costs $1m a year just to keep it topped up with water.
The article says it’s the marshy soil, which makes sense. The whole thing has sunk quite a bit - article says 12 inches which seems absurd. Different areas would decompose at different rates so the joints would open up all the time.
Sounds like they decided to “fix” it with a spray on pool liner stuff, which of course is blue because swimming pools are blue.
f314@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Oh, it definitely seems like it is in need of repairs. But the article also says the contractor talked Trump out of a “Bahamas turquoise” color for the liner, so I feel like this is at least a little bit of both 😅
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 day ago
My guess would be that fixing it would be a massive undertaking, that would cost money and require a competent and qualified contractor, and that’s just not something Trump knows how to do.
In these kinds of situations, all he knows how to do is grift and enrich himself, and that means really shoddy work (if there’s any work at all).
Nautalax@lemmy.world 1 day ago
12 inches isn’t that bad as far as subsidence issues can get. The ground below you is filled with very tiny holes and gaps that water seeps down into and fills and flows through, kind of like a sponge. While water fills those pores it’s difficult to squish down the soil.
If a heavy weight is on them like a building, though, that can put on enough pressure to push the water out of those pores and flow down out and around. A mix of soil and voids/air give much less resistance to weight than a mix of soil and water filling the gaps so then the voids get compacted down and the ground sinks. Different soils in different conditions may not evenly subside and that can give you a situation like the Leaning Tower of Pisa where one side was subsiding faster than the other side. In modern construction people try to get the water out and compact the ground ahead of time so that it acts more consistently and doesn’t make big changes when a heavy object is placed on it.
Here’s a picture from an agricultural area in California illustrating ~30 ft of subsidence that occurred in that area over a half century of pumping out the groundwater to water the crops.
Image
(This also makes flooding worse… ground that used to be filled with holes that could channel the water down and away into large aquifers is now compacted such that those holes are gone. So instead water piles up on the surface in huge sheets that flow and wipe out whatever is between them and a lower elevation.)
johnyreeferseed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 day ago
1 million a year topping it off isn’t even that much, relatively. We probably spend more than that in a month on the military.
