The only difference is that the combustion event in an ICE is subsonic (deflagration) while the combustion in a gun is supersonic (detonation).

Nope, there’s a fundamental difference between a fuel/air mixture burning and something like gunpowder, which is a self oxidising propellant. Most explosives are in the latter category.

No, they’re a combustion event. An actual explosion (detonation, pre ignition) is really bad news for an engine.

Firearms use a self oxidising propellant, so it would be quite easy to say that just doesn’t work.

At college, there were 16 and 17 year old girls with boyfriends in their twenties. Even at the time, I thought that was weird.

That would be effectively worthless if it was used as displayed, with the panel on the backpack. Solar panels perform best when directly facing the sun, as soon as you start to angle them away, they lose output.

I’ve had reasonable results with leaving them on the ground all day though.

Yeah, that’s my experience as well, you leave them out all day and get half a power bank if you’re lucky. Basically only worthwhile if you’re camping somewhere remote for an extended period of time.
