Most of the graphical changes seem… fine I guess. The characters faceplant right into the weird hyperrealistic uncanny valley tho.
I’m not sure them mentioning more dialogue and cutscenes makes me particularly excited. Seeing what they’ve changed and added in the trailer doesn’t inspire confidence, it feels like those joke AAA gaming tutorial things where they state the obvious in a hyper positive cheesy voice and maybe I’m just picky because its different, but here we are.
The multiplayer looks sort of neat, too bad I’d have to buy a switch 2, pay for Nintendo online, and suffer on Nintendo’s shitty servers to use it.
I’ll probably just stick to the recomp. My favorite part of the game is the gameplay, and that looks completely unchanged.

Yeah, I’m not thrilled. Anthro animals with hyperrealistic human proportions give me the jibblies.
k0e3@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
I actually love the character models because they look like old times puppets. Creepy, but nostalgic creepy for an oldtimer like me.

Why not just make a new one?
chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Nintendo has had very few original ideas in a long time. They know they can just keep churning out remakes and sequels to their franchise library of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Starfox, Pokemon, etc. and keep raking in the cash, so why change the formula?
People buy this shit, so there is no motivation to do anything else.
Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
That’s genuinely not true. They’re actually infuriatingly devoted to only putting out games with new ideas. We don’t get regular sequels often because they wouldn’t deviate far enough from the previous one.
The spin for this new Star Fox is clearly the camera tie in, getting to basically be a vtuber in their chat system. It also utilizes mouse controls, a series first.
antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Don’t forget Pikmin and Splatoon.
SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Guys just play the PC port of SF64 called Starship
Glytch@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
With mod support too!
ReducedArc@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Do you know if there’s a good place to find mods for these N64 re/decomps? Googling around hasn’t produced many relavent results for me ( or maybe they don’t exist yet? )
b34k@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Is that playable on my Switch 2?
mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
AFAIK, it’s only playable on a hacked original Switch, by loading the compiled game onto an SD card.
b34k@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
G-Diffuser… seems fine. Let’s go already!
Oh you know that one’s gonna come to bite him in the butt later
RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Yeah, we know because we have already played this game like 4 times before lol
voytrekk@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
Gameplay looks fine, but I’m not buying a switch 2 to play.
What’s up with Fox’s appearance tho? He looks like he’s cone out of retirement being overweight. Remaster doesn’t mean you have to have realistic visuals that alter from the style of the original.
Uruanna@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Check out the OG Star Fox boxart on SNES, it’ll look familiar.
bilb@lemmy.ml 3 weeks ago
I actually really like the new style. It has been divisive though.
RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Ugly Sonic lookin “This will be graphics in 2013” lookin character designs.
Nintendo: We cant make a new FZero because we dont know how to make it fresh.
Also Nintendo:
Look, the music was fine. Gameplay looked fine I guess. Mouse aim added obviously in response to decompilation projects. Graphics were mixed bag, sometimes they looked good and sometimes they looked like the lava on Solar. Arwing designs are way too busy. Multiplayer looks cool and actually interesting, but gameshare over the internet with gamechat is an abomination they shouldnt have even showed. Seeing that 5fps feed for 3 screens was painful.
Definitely not a system seller.
If the rumored Ocarina of Time remake looks like his, I really hope they cancel it immediately.
4am@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Do you think that the other players are playing at 5fps?

Who’s excited for Star Fox 64 4
SarahValentine@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
Ugh, it’s Star Fox 64. I loved it as a kid because it was new and cutting edge and hey rumble pack… but the tone of the SNES original, the music, the character art, they were better than Star Fox 64’s in retrospect.
On top of that, they tried to make Fox look like a realistic fox with that goofy cartoon pattern and mohawk, and it’s just not working for me. The mohawk never worked for me and now it looks even sillier.
It’s a good thing I already laid Nintendo to rest in my heart or seeing this might have hurt a little.
mrfriki@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Not missing having a Switch 2 at all.
thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 3 weeks ago
Finally the kids will understand where the “Do a barrel roll” meme comes.
boaratio@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I’d take an updated version of the original Starfox that ran at a decent framerate.
rafoix@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
They should have included Starfox and Starfox 64 in this remake.
Benchamoneh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
But they’re basically the same game already.
They should have brought Starfox 2 up to date
_Lory98_@discuss.tchncs.de 3 weeks ago
Doesn’t look great…
From the trailer the gameplay seems fine, although I don’t get why they are remaking 64 again (again), and the graphics look decent, albeit generic. I kinda hate the character redesigns and voices. The “more cutscenes” doesn’t really feel like a selling point to me and I’m a bit worried about it.

As much as I want to play this, it’s not gonna get me to buy a switch 2. I need more, Nintendo.
samus12345@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Much as I don’t want to give money to Nintendo, I will if they release a game I absolutely must play AND haven’t raised the price of the console by then. I suspect both things won’t happen at the same time.
chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I want a NEW traditional LoZ with dungeons and an actual progression path. I want a Pokemon game that plays like a Pokemon game and doesn’t run like dog water. I want a new IP that takes a risk and does something interesting that ISN’T a multiplayer focused shitfest on Nintendo’s anemic online service. AND GIVE ME A NEW MARIO MAKER, GODDAMNIT.
mechoman444@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
70 bucks for the original version 100 for remastered. Probably.
And a switch. So 600 to play starfox64 in 2026.
They can go straight to hell.
Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Wow, seems you couldn’t be more wrong.
mechoman444@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I was in the ball bark.
Between 400 and 550. With taxes and potential accessories, you’re right around 600 bucks.
So looks like I couldn’t have been more right.
Idiot.
CordialCephalopod@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
$49.99 for digital, $59.99 for physical. I’m cool with the price. 64 is one of my favorite games of all time and all the additions they’re adding make it worth it for me
mechoman444@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
There’s no physical copy. You’re just buying a card to download the game later.
I mean you. Do you boo. You want to give Nintendo all that money feel free.
OldQWERTYbastard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Meh. I had the original Starfox 64 VHS promo cassette that hyped the game and rumble pak. The game got bumped as my birthday gift request by GoldenEye 007, but I eventually bought the game in its chunky cardboard box; Rumble Pak and all.
I thoroughly enjoyed the N64 game and had more exposure to that one than the original SNES title, but I think I’ll wait for either PC emulation or I cave and buy a Switch 2. The former is more likely at the moment.
It looks nice, but it’s no “killer app.”
Glytch@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Hard pass. Maybe they’ll take that engine and make new content with it. If so then I’ll pay attention.
ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
At least it has a multiplayer mode but I do find it odd how they full release old games instead of having it as an expansion for new games.
Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
A game that amounts to a graphically enhanced N64 game shouldn’t cost $50.
brsrklf@jlai.lu 3 weeks ago
For some reason they didn’t even push the direct/announcement to EU switches.
That said, hard to be excited for another Star Fox 64 remake, no matter how many animated cutscenes we get.
Furbag@pawb.social 3 weeks ago
Not buying a Switch 2 for a game I already played 29 years ago.
I fucking love Star Fox but it hurts to see the franchise rotting on the vine. I know Nintendo’s philosophy is that they only want to make a sequel if they can advance some new mechanics or hardware tech, and clearly they saw the mouse mode and 2-player co-op as the impetus to even make this in the first place, but god damn would I love to see a new story with the exact same gameplay.
Sometimes you just come up on a formula that works and you can let the writers take the wheel for a bit. Not every game needs to push the envelope in terms of graphics or mechanical complexity or never-before-seen gameplay loops.
Katana314@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The character design makes me think of Final Fantasy. 1-5, you’re dealing with chibi sprites and some silly situations where they’re jumping up and down, but also horrible circumstances that define the fate of the world. Even as far as 10, they improve their graphics but aim for a colorful, fantasy-driven atmosphere.
Then you get to 15, 16, and they’re pivoting to the dark and gritty, showing medieval warriors with realistic faces fighting through blood and grime to victory. And if there’s funny clips of 16, I’ve never seen them.
It speaks toward Japan really backlashing to the way the “JRPG” moniker is seen, and attempting to show they can make something “adult” and “realistic”. But it ends up doing the opposite.
Notably, take a look at Mouse, PI’s release. It’s a fully cartoony, silly aesthetic, but take two steps into the world and you’re fighting police corruption, Nazis, and coming back to a bar owned by a dour owner who can tell you dozens of stories about the way modern life hits the most vulnerable. It’s a true adult’s package, wrapped in a childish layer, rather than the opposite. Which, yeah, feels like the effort to make Starfox look “real”.
Also as someone else said, the widened fur around Fox’s neckline does somehow make him look obese.
fox2263@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Inject it in to me.
Hopefully the start of a new series.
Earthman_Jim@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Would love to see how they’d incorporate all the new tech and capability of these consoles to see a NEW Star Fox game. These games were designed based on the confines of the medium at the time. Seems like they’re just restricting a decent IP because they’re too afraid to take a risk on try new stuff, like so many flops of the last couple of decades.
pasdechance@jlai.lu 3 weeks ago
This will be one I’ll wait for my friend to buy. I’m good with Rogue Flight and Starlink until then.
But, I do like Star Fox and missed out on the 64 version so if I ever get a Swith 2, I’ll probably get it.
Guitar@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I have wanted a new Starfox game for so long. I wanted to be excited about this, but why are they remaking it AGAIN?!? 4 of the 6 Starfox games are the same fucking game! When people said they wanted a new Starfox game they meant they wanted a NEW Starfox game. If they wanted to do just a visual upgrade they could have just tweaked Zero and released it on Switch. I mean hell at least that game had new content. The franchise has so much potential and its so frustrating to see Nintendo be completely unable to innovate on this series. Fucking Konami managed to do a decent job for fucks sake. This is the only franchise of theirs that they are just completely incapable of creating something new on and its honestly baffling.

Looks fine, wish it had split screen.
64bithero@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
And if you actually play it you can see it’s also retelling StarFox …
So no matter what you play it’s a reinterpretation of StarFox 64.
I’m excited for wild blue but it needs some tweaking
Flagstaff@programming.dev 3 weeks ago
They should fuse it with that ground RPG and make their own co-op No Man’s Sky.
antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Fox did make it into the Mario Galaxy movie. Maybe they have plans…
Guitar@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I mean they directly referenced that in the direct. This remake is the plan unfortunately. Maybe we’ll actually get a new Starfox game in 2036.
NannerBanner@literature.cafe 3 weeks ago
I didn’t realize there were 7 games now, damn. I always forget the SNES and 3DS. If you want a similar game, down to the cheesy pilot headshots and text boxes while flying (with the oh so common roguelike progression and basic lack of story that modern games seem to love), you could try Whisker Squadron. The gameplay is pretty fun, if basic.
