For anyone lamenting they don’t have a Switch 2, or looking for OoT with QoL improvements for cheaper than whatever Nintendo’s asking price is, there is a free PC port of OoT that will run as fast as your hardware can handle it without messing up gameplay speed etc, has a ton of switchable QoL features, and has mod support for using 3DS (and better) graphics/models. You can even use Master Quest’s edited dungeons with all the benefits of the 3DS version.

It’s called Ship of Harkinian. All you have to do is provide a copy of the game ROM.

Never played the orig (never had a console after the Atari 2600), but as much as I’ve hears of the zelda-games, it’s probably worth a shot?

A pirated ROM will probably do fine too? Before even thinking of giving nintendo a single Buck

I think so, I think Ocarina of Time earns its high esteem, and Ship of Harkinian irons out a lot of the QoL issues that make the original annoying, like being able to toggle boots without going into the menu.

After you finish OoT I’d recommend running Majora’s Mask via 2 Ship 2 Harkinian as well. It’s less popular than OoT but every bit as good, I think. I can’t pick just one, but if I had to pick a “#1 favorite video game of all time”, Majora’s Mask would be a finalist. It’s really good.

Okay so. A primer on the Zelda franchise:

Nintendo dislikes video games with stories, and they nakedly hate video game franchises with overall lore. Nintendo wants to make video games that are mechanically fun, “it’s fun to jump on the thing.” “It’s fun to swing a sword ad the thing.” “It’s fun to throw a ball at the thing.” Look no farther than their primary flagship franchise, the Mario series, for games with an excuse plot and highly polished primary gameplay loops. You can tell they truly, madly, deeply resent their secondary flagship franchise, the Zelda series, for being a more narrative driven adventure saga that attracts gamers who like deep overall lore.

Ocarina of Time is the most important game in the Zelda series’ deep overall lore.

Another option is the Ocarina of Time 3D single screen hack for 3DS. Less messing around required.

I play SoH all the time! It’s awesome! But how do you get the master quest stuff in it? SoH doesn’t accept the master quest ROM.

Last I checked you can import it when you first run it, or from an option menu somewhere, and it adds it to the options you have when starting a new save. I just followed instructions from the GitHub.

    The Nintendo discourse cycle:

    1. Months of furious, irrational debate
    2. Releases to record sales
    3. 1 year later, no lasting cultural impact and most people agree that you should probably just play the original for the historical context (maybe the 3DS remaster, more debate ensues)

    • victorz@lemmy.world ⁨7⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I prefer their remakes, not gonna lie. Improvements to gameplay QoL here and there, good looking graphics, better frame rates(!).

And I grew up with on NES and N64. I know what it was like. The slow frame rate is a big source of frustration for me, personally. But upgraded visuals are a big plus to me also.

      source
      • MimicJar@lemmy.world ⁨6⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I think most people would agree with you, the remakes have QoL improvements that basically make them the best version.

Sure some people will always be nostalgic for the originals, but as remakes continue what is the original?

Let’s look at Link’s Awakening. If you played it on the Game Boy, it’s a great game. But if you played it on the Game Boy Color it had the camera side quest and color dungeon, those were excellent. But if you played it on the Switch the camera side quest is now Dampe’s Dungeon Creator.

I personally liked the camera side quest, but Dampe’s Dungeon Creator was an interesting addition and I think it was cool to see.

At this point we already have the ridiculously extensible PC ports. There’s no shot that there won’t be mods to bring over whatever QoL this remake adds (assuming it’s anything not already in the port) within weeks of release. I’ll give it maybe a year or two for homebrew graphics mods to catch up or for someone to extract the new assets into a mod.

And there’s no debate regarding the 3DS remaster anymore. You can just shove its graphics into the port if you prefer them and flip a few settings to toggle the changed behavior.

Plus everyone knows the best way to play is with the Beatles in OOT mods (seriously go search up the stupid fucking fever dream that is the remixed OST).

    Nintendo finally hired that guy!

Jokes aside, looks pretty good. The faces are throwing me off a lot though. They’re so… weird. I was expecting something closer to breath of the wild than the semi-realistic style. I hope they adjust kid link, at least.

Looking closer I think all the child characters look really uncanny. They’re all so stubby with huge eyes and it’s just weird. Adult link and Ganon look great though.

Whenever someone tries to remake a Nintendo game in a realistic art style people would sarcastically say “Nintendo, hire this man!!!”

Probably CryzenX, who has been remaking OoT in Unreal Engine for a while now. Seems Nintendo didn’t bother to try making theirs look any better than CryzenX’s attempt, sadly.

The water on people makes them look a bit too shiny. I hope they adjust it before release. Otherwise I think they mostly look pretty good.

Since UE5 all new major games look exactly the same. Well, at least I will be saving lots of money.

    source
    • blunderworld@lemmy.ca ⁨3⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I mean you’re certainly entitled to not like the art style or buy the game…but this isn’t using UE5 nor does it look like a UE5 game in my opinion.

  • RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world ⁨5⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

“This will be graphics in 2013.”

Nintendo really is stuck in 2013, huh? Wonder when they’ll get to the UE5 Slop trend… 2040s maybe?

    • ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com ⁨4⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I can’t remember which game it was now, but I’ve definitely played some indie game that has fake load screens because I remember someone modded them out and asked the dev why they existed, and the response was that the dev found the instant transition between scenes jarring. It’s not crazy to think Big N would do the same thing.

      source
      • RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Transitions and a minor less-than-a-second pause are one thing. That’s not what I am talking about.

The triforce animation instantly tells me that’s a 4+ second loading screen. Nobody puts those in for stylistic choice. Even Resident Evil 1 style door transition screens are significantly faster than in the original RE when they show up in modern indie games. RE1 had them because of a hardware limitation, and the creatives decided to hide them with the door animation. Modern developers aren’t usually so creative and they just shove a tiny animated sprite in the bottom corner, as seen here with the animated triforce.

This is officially the first Switch 2 release I am sad because I don’t have a Switch 2 and won’t be able to anytime soon… at least this fall is stacked with a ton of other great releases. Hopefully next year ill be able to get one.

    • HalifaxJones@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨hour⁩ ago

My hope hope hope is that someone much smarter than me figures out how to illegally get it onto a steam deck. That way I’ll be able to play as well. I have no plans to buy a switch unfortunately but really want to play this remake.

Looks awesome! Can’t wait to relive my childhood. I love Ocarina of Time so much, but it hasn’t aged well like pretty much every N64 game. Really looking forward to playing it again with modern quality of life.

    • M137@lemmy.today ⁨6⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

I don’t see that at all, they’ve aged great IMO. And that seems to be the opinion of most people as they’re still loved and played so much.

let me guess… this will cost just as much as a new, original, top tier title made this year

wrong. It will cost more because of the Nostalgia surcharge

Luckily there are exactly 3 games coming out this year to be excited for, so it’s fine anyway.

      source
  • MimicJar@lemmy.world ⁨6⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I believe the physical release is an actual physical release and not a game key card.

So far all first party Nintendo games have had a physical release and not a game key card, I would bet you’re correct.

  • sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz ⁨5⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I’m still not sure if I want to get a Switch 2 over this as much as I love OoT (and the Zelda version of the Switch looks really nice). But the Link and Zelda amiibo statues are so cute, I might grab those just to put on my shelf.

    source
  • Tango@piefed.ca ⁨7⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

So it appears to be a 1:1 straight remake, but with modern graphics, better sound and probably some improvements to the UI.

I’ll be honest though; I preferred how all the characters looked in the 3DS remaster. Oh well; I don’t have a Switch 2 anyway, so it’s not like I was gonna get this either way.

    source
    • blunderworld@lemmy.ca ⁨3⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

They mention that you can run around some of the areas that were previously just backgrounds in the original, so I suspect there will be some new content there at least. And a some cool new UI elements and ocarina accessibility stuff has been added if you’re into that. Time will tell how similar it will be to the original, but either way, I’m feeling pretty excited for it!
