We live in the UK. I got her to download TOR and use the “old.Reddit” trick to bypass this so it was only mildly infuriating for her in the end
Cant see that picture as it’s blocked in the UK.

This sounds more like a “fuck UK age restriction laws” not reddit
Because Lemmy is mostly just a political soapbox, there’s not enough actual non-political content.
post some non political content then. encourage others to.
Would you rather have a place where you can’t talk about it or else you get banned and any dissent is killed and banned and it’s slowly getting worse day by day?
Or a foss freedom free structure platform where people can ACTUALLY talk about what’s on their mind? Hmmmm?
Sounds like you have some privileges you maybe need to realize you have.
If there was some decent political discussion I wouldn’t mind it as much
The problem is that people here can’t stand to see anything they might disagree with.
Having apolitical fun over in !selfhosted@lemmy.world 😁
“Estimate age from selfie”?! Wtf have we become…
When I was 14, I looked like I was 20. When I was 20, I looked like I was 35. When I was 35, I looked like I was 50. You can’t determine someone’s actual age from a fucking photo. Jesus.
I have perpetually looked like I’m 12 since 2008. That’s the most common number people always give me when they guess my age. I’m so sure an AI would somehow guess correctly.
Am 45. Constantly get told by 20 somethings that I look 26-28. I still get carded…
My 25 year old SO got carded while my 19 year old wasn’t questioned when we were at a liquor store. I think because my brother had a big beard they assumed he must be old lol.
Yep, same. I’m not a fan of people thinking I’m not old and grumpy, but they usually find out.
Reddit doesn’t really care; they’re going to do the bare minimum legally so they can feed more ads and get more clicks.
When I was working at a local supermarket, we had the instructions to explicitly ask anyone for ID that we deemed 40 or younger, when they tried to buy tobacco or alcohol. For that exact reason.
Just send them a random selfie from the internet, no?
You nees to do a video looking left, right, saying some numbers. The companies that do the verification are owned by Peter thiell and co
Well, was it a photo of an adult tooth or a baby tooth? Adult teeth are too mature for the younguns.
Reddit needs a better tagging system than just NSFW. It was pointless having a filter when you don’t subscribe to any porn subreddits and all the ones you are subscribed to don’t allow porn in the first place. It’s only natural people started using NSFW for other things, most notably spoilers, which I believe they’ve added in recent years. If you had the filter enabled, you ended up missing out on content.
It does need better tagging but honestly thats not the issue here. This is because of the new UK law, simple as.
Also some shitty Republican states in the US.
Rofl what a piece of piss website
Can’t have kids looking at teeth! Next thing you know, they’ll want to become, forgive me for this, dentists.
That’s a cavity in the law right there. Guess they don’t want us to brace ourselves for the harsh realities of molars online 😂
Oi mate! Ya got a loicense fer dat dental advice?
Fun fact: I can’t see the screenshot as I’m in the UK and your instance has taken the maximally paranoid literal meaning of the OSA and blocked access just in case anything’s accidentally not flagged as NSFW.
The idiots here are your lawmakers and their supporters.
You know how everybody blames boomers for various things, which had nothing to do with them, they were merely victims of the capitalist corrupt systems they lived under? This is your generation’s failure to address the needs of the future. Good luck.
Don’t forget to use obfs4 bridges
I wouldn’t bother with bridges honestly
If anything use snowflakes
taken the maximally paranoid literal meaning
Them people won’t get hung on a technicality. You have to be nuts not to be paranoid these days.
With how the law is written, if you think anyone might ever make a mistake (likely), think the government might ever bother going through the hassle of enforcing it (probably less likely if you’re not running a big website), and don’t have loads of spare money to pay huge fines with or to pay an age verification service with (likely), then blocking the UK is the only way to be compliant. It doesn’t require a technicality. The law just doesn’t have any leeway for honest minor mistakes or small hobbyist websites.
At least on lemmy we can just block instances that do idiotic things like that and still use the rest of the service
Images should load from your local Lemmy instance right?
But checking now I see you, OP and the com are all from the same instance. So I’m confused.
No, OP is lemmings.world, not lemmy. world.
Reddit isn’t worth it any more IMO, It’s all just downvoting and moaning over everything. Yes that happens here but at least people seem to talk more.
Left 2 1/2 years ago, whenever I’m forced back because of some tech question I see the constant anger and anxiety in the comments. It may be smaller here but goddamn if it’s not more pleasant
Even worse, it’s all just corporate and nation-state shill accounts. They’re the only ones willing to put up with all the bullshit required to post.
I know they say half of Reddit is fake but I’m willing to bet it’s more, they can’t be be real people with some of the stuff they come out with.
It as way more interesting content than Lemmy
Shit like this is why I’m using a VPN
Reddit bans a lot of IP ranges.
They got you covered, their network security will ban you and block you from access.
Remember when reddit was about being anonymous?
As a person who uses a VPN - what?!
Do I need to fuck around the UK servers for a bit to get this feature?
redlib?
I was gonna say the same
Simple delete Reddit
If she replaces “www.reddit” with “old.reddit” too?
Yeah, dental issue. Sure.
Upload a random selfie?
it’s not an image, they ask for live camera feed where you turn your head to the side to make sure you exist in 3d and stuff
lol wtf!
I went to use Marketplace last year which meant signing into my old FB account for the first time since like 2013, even though I barely used it before that. Turns out it had been hacked at some point in the last decade and I had to upload a bunch of pics and ID stuff to get it back with a 48 hr review time or something…
Ooooooor… Just made a new account.
There was less important dt on that account then there was me giving Meta my latest update on where I am in life now.
I wonder if it could be fooled with video clips.
Facebook’s doing this too iirc
Actually in France they have that too, right ?

Christ. Stop using fucking reddit already

We would love to, if not for the accumulated knowledge which can’t be (easily) found elsewhere.

Honestly Lemmy gets mentally draining, constant political drama that is guaranteed to lean left, barely any non-partisan or neutral discussions happen here and god forbid anyone say anything that can be seen as conservative because a barrage of insults are certain to come your way.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 hour ago
something tells me you whining about not having enough conservative propaganda on a site, that wants nothing to do with it, go back to reddit.

There are orders of magnitude difference in the severity.

Lemmy sucks it just sucks different, its the photo negative of truth social and anyone who thinks that this place isnt just a different echo chamber is deluded.

No matter what happens, I always expect Lemmy to have the worse possible take.
I also don’t like that politics seems to spill into every community

I had to make an account that had no news and tried to limit anything that could regularly get too political for mental health
