Sigh…
Wow, so, Nintendo is winning the console war by suicide? Sony jumped off the console cliff out of nowhere, and now Xbox is eating a rat poison cake for fun.
Still standing : the indie scene, the PC gaming master race, the retrogaming scene, Nintendon’t.
I hope Valve won’t die by autoerotic asphyxia. I don’t like them THAT MUCH (like, Newel is building cunt yachts instead of funding cool studios for cool new games), but they’re still on the good side of history.
We’ll still have GOG, though.
PC gaming might be standing but it's costing an arm and a leg to do so.
You’re right, these past few years have been awful to acquire a PC
As someone who has been around since the third console generation (NES, SMS), honestly I feel like we are living in one of the worst eras in gaming history, second only to the crash of '83 (but I wasn’t there for that so I can’t confirm).
It really sucks that Nintendo is winning the console wars. Between suing their fans for making their games better, and them being seemingly unable to release a console that can keep up with modern performance standards.
I mean I’m not in this fight —my last console was the 360—and I’ve been PC exclusive since, but still, we need healthy competition or things are only going to get worse for gamers.
The Switch 2 is a handheld. I don’t get why people expect it to be on par with home platforms, it’s competition is the Steam Deck.
GOG tried to kill itself with the Nazi symbols sent in emails, that they never really apologized for. They are lucky people have short memories.
I just picked up a refurbished workstation to stream my main pc to the living room via Steam. Works like a charm 😎
Oh, yeah, this will work. Why didn’t anyone else think of this?
/s
They should make Uwe Boll head of that department.
Looking at the Halo show that might even be an improvement. Maybe I have some weird rose tinted glasses but I remember Boll movies being like bad fanfic, which would be a step up from what the Halo show was.
Just combine this with DLSS 5 and everyone will be making AAA games without learning a damn thing!
Someone at Microsoft is really mad that it was Amazon who profited from Fallout tv show.
E N S H I T T I F I C A T I O N .
That’s not really enshittification, is it…?
I saw a post on blusky that summarized it: Microsoft never wanted to consolidate studios. They wanted to consolidate IP.
That was always the case. Nobody cares about workers from other companies. There is a reason why people fear for their jobs in buyouts/mergers.
Xbox now has some of the best IP in gaming.
I think they’ve really underestimated just how little consumers care about IP when the product attached to it is trash.
20 years ago, Halo was one of the most beloved gaming IPs. Now, after a decade of garage, hardly anyone gives a shit about it.
I don’t think movies don’t bring in as much money attention as they used to.
I haven’t been in a theatre in years, I can’t be bothered to watch most movies anyway, most are boring, I guess the writers strike really had a bigger effect than anticipated.
I actually haven’t even finished, took 4 attempts and gave up, project hail mary even though a lot of people liked it. And as It’s implied, I couldn’t finish it even sitting at my desk with it being free.
Then they will not release movies to get tax breaks. Bunch of geniuses.
Next for release: Master Chief vs Acme Corporation
Now that everyone hates the IP, let’s ruin them further with movies
They are absolutely fucked
Microsoft getting into the movie biz when many are no longer watching movies. Genius! Those who watch the Microsoft movies…will they need to purchase new hardware? /s
won’t be able to afford the next-gen consoles anyway.
Thought the thumbnail was Mia Khalifa for a second. “how people experience our franchises beyond the games themselves” indeed.
A brown woman with black hair
You: “is this a different brown person? Yes it must be”
C’mon man. She’s not even in the glasses.
Shame they can’t repeat the success of the 360.
Every 360 I acquired has succumbed to the RROD. Still wish I had one that worked though, it was insanely popular. I barely used my XBone
Don’t video game sales make magnitudes more money than movies. Sounds like a another brilliant Xbox move.
Depend. Pokemon doesn’t make his principal income by selling video game. Mario was a big success.
If they wanted money, they should just make a decent MMO and/or predatory gacha games
The bargain bins are full of once-great brands that haven’t produced anything in decades, but will let any old cheap factory slap their name on a product for a few bucks.
yeah this is bullshit move. copying PlayStation, which didn’t even do great with films.
but i guess part of the reason is that since hardware prices keeping going up and up, they don’t expect many ppl to buy future consoles or handhelds.
and movies/tv don’t require audience to buy any hardware upgrades, for the most part.
“Xbox XP will be headed by Kayleen Walters, who previously spent a couple years as president of Minecraft studio Mojang and before that spent close to a decade in different brand and “franchise development” roles at Microsoft. Prior to that she spent 13 years at Lucasfilm, finishing her time there as vice president of franchise marketing and integrated planning.”
That’s disaster waiting to happen, all in that one paragraph. So you’re going to have someone spearheading this, who only knows Minecraft and Marketing. Yeah, good fucking job there, idiots. There is nothing there that speaks of being a director, a producer or even having a hand working staff behind a film. Just an annoying marketer who’s going to shove this shit down our throats. Wonderful.
I can’t wait for XBox Live: The Movie!
Xbox now owns the following franchises, among many others: Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Warcraft, Diablo, Call of Duty, The Outer Worlds, Wolfenstein, Doom… Those are just most of the important ones from recent acquisitions. Some already have movies or TV shows, but they can always make new ones for those too.
Surely something from Microsoft with XP in the name will leave a lasting positive legacy...
Somehow, John Halo returned.
To now layoff actors and close more studios.
Notoriously simple industry. Anyone can do it really.
Because their foray into television had gone oh so well… Why not go bigger?
Don’t they remember thier halo debacle? I didn’t need to see master cheifs whole asshole…
We goin back to Kinect and Television?
Reminds me the time Xbox prioritized the console for TV.
Now there’s something I’ve not thought about in a while. HDMI-input…
Everyday We Stray Further From God’s Light
New Halo TV show! Yay!
AI sloppy second chances!

I could understand doing this if your brand was thriving, but this just feels like trying to squeeze money out of a sinking business instead of fixing the problems that are sinking it.

Their C-suites are in panic and know fuck all about games but they probably have seen one or two movies and have heard of Netflix. They probably proposed this because it‘s the only thing that makes sense to them in a foreign world that confuses them. It can only fail and will list likely churn out AI slop nobody wants to watch.
Zorque@lemmy.world 1 day ago
They may also think Disney or Skydance will buy them and theyll get to sail out the window on their golden parachutes.
end_stage_ligma@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Damn. Wait until they hear about Stremio.
Paradachshund@lemmy.today 1 day ago
I’m pretty sure they’re in liquidation mode right now. Everything at Microsoft is being sacrificed on the altar of AI

It makes sense when you realize they paid bank for a bunch of IPs over the last 5 years and want to squeeze more out of it.
This is just them looking to make codblops the movie.
