Elon pushes right wing and nazi adjacent stuff in the algorithm. Anyone he replies to also gets boosts and he constantly replies “!” To right wing conspiracy theorists etc

remember when all the Redditors were celebrating him being forced to buy Twitter because he would lose a small fraction of hos income?
fubbernuckin@lemmy.world 5 months ago
I’m still happy about that. We have blue sky and mastodon. Anyone still putting content on Twitter is just doing this to themselves at this point.

It’s amazing anyone has to say this. Like, Elon isn’t a subtle person. How do some people not know what’s going on - particularly people who USE his platform?!

Get the fuck OFF of “X”!

-
They auto-promote anyone with a blue check, which are disproportionately elon stans, which are increasingly nazis.
-
The Russian troll farms are active on Xitter.
-
The algorithm likes engagement. The actual nazis, the trolls, and the useful idiots are only feeding each other since that’s a huge portion of accounts left on that site.
dactylotheca@suppo.fi 5 months ago
And Musk is a reich-wing edgelord, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d told the poor bastards still working at Twitter to specifically boost fascist posts
BleatingZombie@lemmy.world 5 months ago
3b. The negative interactions are still counted as “engagement” so anybody commenting against it is unfortunately just fueling it

I’m not saying that right-wingers are Nazis or racists,
I am.
Delusional@lemmy.world 5 months ago
It’s really fucking hard for them to deny it at this point. Hate and racism has become their entire platform and the only reason they even have a chance of winning is because of decades of brainwashing idiots with propaganda.

That’s part of it, but without exploiting the massive failures of the US electoral system they’d never have enough people in the government to be able to take it over like they have.

Bears though amiright?
aStonedSanta@lemm.ee 5 months ago
Same. And they are in this persons feed cause they are paying money to amplify hate. We allow corporations to make money off people spreading toxic ideology through the “veil” of advertising. We really need to fix up citizens united or whatever it was. Can’t recall which recent fuckery it was.
Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
When people say they aren’t Nazi’s, but all they do is tweet about Nazi’s, and support Nazi ideas, and defend Nazi’s…
Well, then yes I think they may, in fact, be Nazi’s.
ICastFist@programming.dev 5 months ago
The snarky answer is “because you’re on twitter”
The better answer is because Elon Musk likes that kind of content and not only allows it to proliferate, but also encourages it. Not only that, the nazis and their sympathizers have loads of money to spend on ads and bots

No starlink alternative
enbyecho@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Of course you get downvoted. Because people don’t know. Let me try to help educate y’all.
In many rural areas in the US there is NO (as in zero, nada, zilch) cable, DSL or even mobile/LTE. Nothing. I know because I live in one of those areas. So your internet options are:
- Read books and talk to people
- A traditional satellite provider like Hughesnet or Viasat, where you’ll have 10 GB daytime MONTHLY quotas, 800ms latency and extremely poor service.
- Twiddle your thumbs and call it twidder.
Until Starlink came along I could not work remotely, stream any content or game. Despite being usually 20 MBps down, Hughesnet was so high latency that page loads were usually 10-20 seconds or more. A lot of things that had short timeouts simply didn’t work. So yeah, I self-flaggilate every time I pay the bill but Starlink has allowed us to have a normal internet life.
echodot@feddit.uk 5 months ago
That literally is, it’s called Oneweb. SpaceX even launch their satellites rather amusingly.
FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 5 months ago
If you use corporate social media, be it TikTok, YouTube, FB, Twitter, or whatever, your feed is programmed to feed you content that will do two things:
- Keep you perpetually angry
- Convince you that everything you believe is correct, no matter how outlandish.
Politics achieves that for the largest number of people, therefore the algorithm is feeding that to you. It’ll keep most people clicking on ads.
Codilingus@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
I’m too lazy to verify, but I remember a strong sentence that stuck with me. Reading an article that makes you angry produces dopamine all the same as a feel good article. It’s easier to make people angry at a situation.

Ironically that’s not too different from the content we’re seeing on Lemmy as well. I never fully figured out why that is but it seems like we’re somehow addicted to outrage and when there’s no algorithm to serve us that we do it ourselves.

schwim@lemm.ee 5 months ago
It wouldn’t surprise me if Twitter is pushing it due to it being proven that outrage boosts engagement. Facebook has been doing that for years.
Zwiebel@feddit.org 5 months ago
Since you’re already on Lemmy, why not give Mastodon a try? joinmastodon.org

Maggoty@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Dude, Elon Musk bought it with the express purpose of amplifying far right voices. He just finally figured out how to get the algorithm to do it instead of pinning his favorite retweets and self tweets to the top of everyone’s feed.

I’m seeing this on YouTube, as well. I’m interested in gaming and entertainment, but in the last couple of months, I’ve been getting absolute right-wing dipsh*ttery in my “Recommended” list.
It feels to me like YouTube is trying to rage-bait users into engaging in this trash, even though they’ve shown no interest in it.
card797@champserver.net 5 months ago
Every corporate media outlet is trying to get Joe Biden to drop out of the race, but none of those outlets is talking about how horrible Donald Trump is. Coincidence? I think not.
Katana314@lemmy.world 5 months ago
I could be wrong, but it might be unintentional. The algorithm seeing a process by which rage and reaction generates more views (and hence more ad revenue) and tries to see if it can get it to spread. Same thing that lead to all those stupid “open mouth yelling” thumbnails.
It’s still irresponsible, and I’m all for assuming evil out of Google, I just don’t think they’d gain much from getting you specifically indoctrinated by Ben Shapiro.
kent_eh@lemmy.ca 5 months ago
Click on the 3 dots menu and choose “do not recommend this channel”.
Despite people’s cynicism, it actually does work.
rozodru@lemmy.ca 5 months ago
Youtubes algo, especially with shorts, is unforgiving. Even if you mistakenly click on a video or leave a short on then they assume “oh, you want more of this!”

I think they’re just trying to get the conservative fucks off their ass, just like every fucking company that is cancelling DEI programs and scaling back community LGBTQ activities.

Elon Musk is a literal fascist.
mecfs@lemmy.world 5 months ago
My rule is even though I still begrudgingly use twitter, I stay the hell away from the for you feed and stay on the following feed.
The answer to your question is that Musk is a right wing propagandist.
AsherahTheEnd@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Because it’s fucking Twitter, are you serious? That place is a haven for right-wing asshats, of course it’s going to be overflowing with their shitty content.
Stop fucking using that website.
The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 5 months ago
It’s a total culture shock any time I check twitter. After browsing user-moderated spaces (like lemmy or reddit) for so long, I’ve gotten used to very rarely seeing anything more than a mildly conservative opinion. Seeing extreme right-wing stuff, outside of spammers trying to shock people, is almost non-existent.
Then you open twitter and get reminded what largely unmoderated internet looks like again.
There’s still good content mixed in with everything, but right wing outrage bait is absolutely winning the algorithm battle over there.
lord_ryvan@ttrpg.network 5 months ago
Your user moderated spaces are also spaces where you choose your own information bubble, the same goes with Mastodon. So you’re only seeing extreme right wing content if that’s what you selected. Simple as.
forrgott@lemm.ee 5 months ago
And that’s actually not relevant, but thanks.
OldWoodFrame@lemm.ee 5 months ago
Real answer, Elon made it more friendly to the far right (the racists and Nazis) and unbanned a bunch of them who had previously been banned for being too racist and Nazi. Then he introduced a subscription service where you pay to have Twitter spread your content.
So that started a doom loop: The far right bought the additional views, people who didn’t appreciate the extra racism and Nazi views on their timeline left Twitter, but the view boost was paid for so it kept pushing those views to the fewer people who remained, then THAT volume of hate pushed more people away, etc.
It probably got to the point that they couldn’t keep paid views high enough with just people who care about politics and they had to just push at all costs, eventually to you.

Election season. It’s inescapable.
istanbullu@lemmy.ml 5 months ago
A better question is why you are still on Twitter.
givesomefucks@lemmy.world 5 months ago
That’s what Elon wants you to see.
Not just on a personal level, but the algorithm knows if you get hooked, you’re gonna be on the platform a lot.
Like, you’re basically asking why your shady drug dealer keeps trying to get you to try meth.
They care about profit more than you’re well being. So they’re throwing an addictive thing at you at every opportunity
lord_ryvan@ttrpg.network 5 months ago
I want to add that I’ve left Twitter to escape its right wingness even before Musk bought the platform.
Though he may have fanned the fire, he bought an already right wing platform.
fubbernuckin@lemmy.world 5 months ago
To be fair, there were extremists of every wing. He just fanned the right wing.
