The word has been used as a euphemism for “poison” since Old High German, a semantic loan from Late Latin dosis (“dose”), from Ancient Greek δόσις (dósis, “gift; dose of medicine”).
I wondered how the heck it got that meaning. Pretty strange to apply a term for giving something in general to poison specifically.

Yeah, that one stood out to me, too. The green guy saying “it’s not a theory” is incorrect - it’s just not the colloquial definition that the blue guy is using. Why couldn’t “hypothesis” have been used instead, since it’s closer to the definition you said at the end of your comment? “But that’s just a hypothesis - a game hypothesis!”

It’s an unfortunate false cognate that the word Gift means poison in English.

If enough people use it wrong, it becomes right.

I mean, if they’re being an asshole about it there’s no excuse - it’s just imprecise wording that may cause confusion.

You’re culturally British, therefore you’re British.

Say you have German and Scottish ancestry. Omitting that part makes it sound like you’re saying you’re culturally German and Scottish.

In their case, you can’t play the “stuffed animal” card, but you can still play the “anthropomorphized” card that all the others can as well. Animals that are able to reason and talk to one another are less likely to consider each other prey.
