I knew a guy like this. He said he didn’t like sunflower seeds for the same reason he didn’t like shrimp. “Too crunchy”. Apparently he was eating the shell and all of both of these things…

I had that experience with Lychees. Nobody told me you weren’t supposed to eat the crunchy center!
Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 23 hours ago
I had the opposite experience eating pomegranate the first time. So fucking delicious, but the pips were an unsettling crunch/texture that I couldn’t get over. However, it’s too much work to remove them from the pips, so no fresh pomegranate for me.

Did he like bananas?

You take of the skin? Such a waste… that’s where all the electrolytes are.
ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 23 hours ago
Okay but a properly fried shrimp is peak with the shell on. Good snappy crunch to it, they help hold the flavor in, wonderful. And for tails I usually don’t even care how they’re cooked I just go ahead and eat the tails shell in saves a lot of hassle and they’re pretty good
snoons@lemmy.ca 21 hours ago
Also a good source of [compound that lubricates your joints].
Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 22 hours ago
Depends on the shrimp.
Pandasdontfly@anarchist.nexus 14 hours ago
For most of my life I willingly ate them shell and all
BeUnique@lemmy.zip 8 hours ago
At least you didn’t know that wasn’t the social norm. Eating sunflower seeds whole is like swallowing splinters and causes constipation. As for shrimp, it’s just an unpleasant chew as far as I’m concerned.
zaphod@sopuli.xyz 23 hours ago
But that’s how you eat sunflower seeds. You don’t chew or swallow the shell, but you put it in your mouth and crack it with your teeth.
BeUnique@lemmy.zip 15 hours ago
Nah I confirmed. He was just tossing them in his mouth and eating them whole. This is how the conversation came to be in the first place. He was a work friend and I offered him some sunflower seeds and he said “nah man too crunchy” and that unravelled the whole thing. He was a pretty sheltered guy, eating mostly processed garbage and nobody cooked in his house growing up. He was a nice guy just pretty oblivious at times. I once got him to eat one of those Airborne capsules you put in water and drink as a chewable.
sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 1 day ago
Sometimes I intentionally eat the shells as well. So tasty and crunchy
BeUnique@lemmy.zip 15 hours ago
Yeah, til you have to shit them out the next day.
Zacryon@feddit.org 7 hours ago
Well at least anon was nutritionmaxxing, because frozen fruits and vegetables have higher content in nutrients than those stored at room temperature. Not cooking them also keeps a lot of the good stuff intact. But please go ahead and cook and eat vegetables and fruit regardless of temperature. Because it’s more important to have plenty of them regularly in your diet and the nutrition differences barely matter.
Furthermore, although somewhat funny post, there are way too many people who don’t know how to cook even basic stuff. This is bad. For them, their health, finances, and independence, and a shame on a societal level.
RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 19 hours ago
Yeah this is silly and cringe but eating frozen fruits while they’re still frozen is amazing.
cheat700000007@lemmy.world 4 hours ago
Especially banana
Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 11 hours ago
They are better while they are still frozen. Love me a bowl of frozen mixed berries, even worth the seeds that stick in the teeth.
Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 7 hours ago
If you have a good blender frozen fruit is great with some soy milk. Makes a nice smoothie.
Nangijala@feddit.dk 15 hours ago
So true! I really think that banana, grapes and pineapple work particularly well when frozen 🤤
What fruits do you enjoy frozen?
MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works 11 hours ago
Cherries. Mmm, especially with plain yoghurt.

My father likes to tell this tale of when he made fried spaghetti because he was a poor student and his buddy liked it so much that he asked how to make them. My father replied “Like normal spaghetti. But you fry them in a pan.”
That’s what he did. Instead of cooking he fried the dry spaghetti in a pan.

Ok I’m going to attempt that

Going in another direction, but ramen is great if you fry it after boiling it. Just drain the water (save it if it’s a broth type as you can add the noodles back after frying), then drop them in a pan with heated oil, fry them for a few minutes, just to the point where the noodles on the bottom start to burn a bit (don’t stir them before this but do stir after to interrupt the burning) and your ramen will have a satisfying crunch.
Widdershins@lemmy.world 14 hours ago
My dad tried frying frozen peas once. Turned the kitchen into Viet goddamn Nam. I still have flashbacks.
bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 14 hours ago
I actually love frozen peas because they can easily be thrown into whatever I’m currently making. Especially something like fried rice.
Of course, just frying them alone is probably pretty difficult.
diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 19 hours ago
Italians also do it. Although they put tomatoes in and smash them first.
TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I won’t dog on them since the context implies this is ESL, but seeing “etc.” punctuated as though it’s an acronym is unholy.
TwilightKiddy@programming.dev 1 day ago
Why did you have to point it out? I didn’t even notice until you did!
grue@lemmy.world 1 day ago
If their first language is a Romance language it still isn’t an excuse, because “etc” comes from the Latin.
sukhmel@programming.dev 13 hours ago
But punctuation rules might be very different, e.g. in Spanish ordinal numerals are supposed to have a dot to denote that it’s a contraction: 1.º
Nowadays this seems to die down, but it still is in the rules:
Entre el número y la letra volada debe haber un punto.
There must be a period between the number and the superscript letter.

Tell me you’re white without telling me you’re white.
No shade to fair folks who are fair cooks, but I ain’t never seen a person with melanin who does not know that cooked veggies are a thing. It’s always the pigmentally challenged.
too_high_for_this@lemmy.world 12 hours ago
Do you think it’s okay to be racist as long as it’s towards white people?
craftrabbit@lemmy.zip 23 hours ago
Belongs in the category of things you know once somebody told you. I think we all have little things that nobody has ever taught us and everyone else knows.

tbf, ignorance is something you giggle at once, before getting over it and educating them. Hopefully OP and their friend got over it and managed some actual change

This isn’t ignorance, it’s pure idiocy.
PuddleOfKittens@sh.itjust.works 3 hours ago
“Eat some frozen peas!”
“Ew WTF why are your frozen peas frozen?”
No, it’s just ignorance. Expecting the name to be literally accurate is completely understandable. Unashamedly pointing and laughing just makes you a dick.

Legitimately I’ve snacked on frozen veggies in the hot summer. Anyways, just get all your macros and take in fewer calories than you burn and you’ll lose weight.
RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 14 hours ago
Peas and carrots are too full of sugar. I mean, they’re better than chips or candy bars by a long shot, but minimizing them or mixing peas and carrots with other less sugary veg is a better idea.
rhymeswithduck@sh.itjust.works 14 hours ago
Good grief, can we stop shaming people for eating the “wrong types of vegetables” as if that’s even a thing? Just be happy they’re eating any at all.
Darkenfolk@sh.itjust.works 13 hours ago
Things that cauliflower people say.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
No. Health obsessed people are mostly obsessed with feeling superior to others based on diet, so they won’t ever stop shaming anyone who eats differently than they do. They are projecting their insecurity with themselves, and they are so insecure eating some peas might as well by drinking 2L of soda per day.
AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 5 hours ago
Adding to this, because despite the kneejerk reactions, you’re pretty correct on this one. Carrots and peas are both more on the high starch side, not quite as high fiber as other plant foods. So basically you can think of them as being in the same category as potatoes. Starchy vegetables are actually more strongly associated with unhealthy aging than even refined grains.
And like you said, this isn’t to demonize them. They still have a place in any reasonable diet, it’s just a good idea to be aware of the need for balance with other more beneficial foods like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, sources of unsaturated fats, legumes, and nuts and seeds.
some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
You do understand all sugar isn’t created equal, yes? And sugar interacts with other components of a given food? Carbs don’t exist in a vacuum. You’re comparing actual whole foods to literal trash.
Please educate yourself and also stop spreading bullshit.
AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 5 hours ago
No, they are actually correct about the effects of starchy vegetables. They have some benefits - like carrots having beta-carotene, but they are about as unhealthy as refined grains are. Maybe slightly worse. Their consumption should be kept on the lower side, and their detriments can be mitigated or even canceled out by being eaten in the same meal as other high fiber whole foods and sources of unsaturated fats.
SirHery@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
Dam, better go eating drywall.
heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 13 hours ago
Dude, let’em eat vegetables they like. They can venture further without the gatekeeping; otherwise, they’ll say “why bother.”
Glowstick@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I love frozen fruit and veg! If you’ve never tried it then don’t knock it
sukhmel@programming.dev 12 hours ago
Yeah, frozen peas sounds pretty edible and even nice for current weather
NottaLottaOcelot@lemmy.ca 21 hours ago
Me too! When I was a kid, my grandmother would give me a little bowl of frozen peas and corn to snack on. Now I give my kids the same and they strongly prefer them cold.
Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 23 hours ago
I work with a kid who really likes cold sensations in his mouth (autism, this experience isn’t uncommon.) At snack time he eats frozen peas and frozen blueberries.
Which is why when I recently cooked with frozen peas, I tried a few before cooking. I get it, I’m a fan of peas and the novelty of them being frozen was interesting. I didn’t love it enough to make a new snack out of it, but you’re right - you never know until you try.
Glowstick@lemmy.world 22 hours ago
Try frozen fruit. Dude, so good. Frozen cherries, frozen pineapple, frozen mango, mmmmm
southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 1 day ago
Totally gay, because office bro was totally hoping to get some booty.
But damn if I can’t believe this is true. I’ve met people that are that unaware of that kind of thing. Shit, I once had to teach a 76 year old man how to operate a can opener because up until then, his wife had done all kitchen stuff.
I started the case maybe two weeks before and had been doing the meal prep because home health. One morning, I show up and my man is stabbing at the top of a can with an old butcher knife. I freak out a little because, damn, dude needs a nurse’s assistant, so an already less than ideal tool was crazy dangerous. Also, dude had decided to ignore the nicely arranged food I had cooked the day before, which is story in itself.
So I dig through the drawers and find a shitty old can opener. Show him how to use it, and Bob’s your uncle. Mostly.
Dude wasn’t senile, believe it or not. Just not the brightest crayon in the box and woefully a product of his generation. Nice guy though! Not always the case on a case.

I swear some people act so fucking alien about life, like they had not learned some of the most basic things, or lack what you would consider to be the most obvious social skills.
I think some families just royally fucked up their kids heads growing up.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
No, they just didn’t have your life. or your standards, or your ‘skills’.
I grew up working-class, and upper middle class people think my social skills are shit, because I’m not endlessly passive-aggressive like they are. I have no issue communicating with with other working-class people, but upper class people think i’m a social freak because I speak my mind directly, which to them is an impossible idea.

This is something an alien would do. It would perfectly fit as a scene in the Resident Alien series. And now I’m kinda disappointed it wasn’t.
Psythik@lemmy.world 3 hours ago
“Resident Alien Series”? Is that like a spinoff/knockoff of Third Rock from the Sun?
