very clearly the best metal is mercury because it's the only one you can drink at room temperature
FaceDeer@fedia.io 2 years ago
Gallium wants a word.
slurpyslop@kbin.social 2 years ago
you need your hvac serviced if your room is 85F
UNCOMFORTABLE
Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Gallium is like M&M’s.
Melts in your mouth, not in your hands.
bi_tux@lemmy.world 2 years ago
but you can eat potassium at room temperature

big pop rock
Mango@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Well I wanna drink a cold metal.
FatTony@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Really? No one on the Tungsten train over here? Highest melting point of all metals. It’s also called ‘the devourer of tin’. Now that’s metal for ya.
YerbaYerba@lemm.ee 2 years ago
Tin will devour itself anyway
lemonmelon@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Only because it knows tungsten is out there lurking. Waiting. Hunting.
iiGxC@slrpnk.net 1 year ago
Highly recommend getting a tungsten cube. The density is surprising

Tungsten gang represent

I’m partial to titanium and nickel-chrome alloys. There’s a reason they’re named “super alloys”!
FellowEnt@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
More of an Aluminium/Magnesium or Iron/Titanium alloy guy myself but you do you!
SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 2 years ago
I only fly in airplanes made of 100% American steel.
JayDee@lemmy.ml 2 years ago
The true tossup is actually mercury or lead.
Both insanely useful metals with a massive variety of helpful traits.
And the universe made them poisonous to us as a big “FUCK YOU”.
Liz@midwest.social 2 years ago
It’s very annoying that gold is so expensive. Much less toxic and still has loads of great properties. It’s just, you know, expensive.
repungnant_canary@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yeah, and it’s expensive because it’s …well, expensive. It’s not any less abundant than some other metals or more difficult to extract. We just decided it’s gonna be expensive
PenisWenisGenius@lemmynsfw.com 1 year ago
There’s also silver which is an off brand ripoff version of gold. It kind of sucks because it discolors and turns purple.
hellfire103@lemmy.ca 2 years ago
Amateurs! It’s gotta be silver!
- Looks nice in jewellery
- Antimicrobial properties
- An essential component of camera film
- Highly conductive (e.g. used for electrodes and thermal paste in computing)
- Catalyst in many chemical reactions
- Used to make mirrors
- A critical component of solar panels
- The only metal capable of incapacitating werewolves, and also somewhat effective against vampires
rtxn@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Highly conductive
Until it oxidizes, and silver is a complete whore for oxygen.
IzzyScissor@lemmy.world 2 years ago
- Turns you blue if you consume it daily

Great if you want to cosplay a smurf
zik@lemmy.world 2 years ago
It’s a great heat conductor roo

Iron and bronze have entire ages of history named after them, so…
Assman@sh.itjust.works 2 years ago
This idiot forgot the beer can age
alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 2 years ago
Beer cans have a plastic liner, otherwise the beer would eat through the aluminum.
Sanctus@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Yeah but the iron age is more the iron alloy age, it just doesn’t sound as cool.
Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Aluminum “rusts” as well. White rust. Aluminum oxide.
SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 2 years ago
in fact, it rusts so fast, that it’s pretty much impossible to get a “clean” aluminium surface while oxygen is around
Maalus@lemmy.world 1 year ago
They had to invent an entirely new style of welding to weld it correctly because it rusts so much you can’t even melt it for welding reliably.
Kolanaki@yiffit.net 2 years ago
You also need both iron oxide and aluminum powder to make thermite. It’s amazing what metal can achieve when it works together.
Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 years ago
And if you combine that with magnesium powder, you can make a historic doping agent to coat your zeppelin with!

YOU ARE WRONG COLONEL SANDERS, MOMMA’S RIGHT
Liz@midwest.social 2 years ago
Yeah but like, in order to get significant amounts of it you gotta be in a relatively harsh environment.
Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 1 year ago
You get a lot of it at sea. Not supposed to polish it off though, because the aluminum oxide acts as a barrier to further corrosion, whereas iron oxide flakes and continually exposes fresh surface.
the_third@feddit.de 1 year ago
Under a car and in contact with iron is enough. I love my aluminum body cars but man, you need to be careful selecting fasteners.
Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Dunno how harsh a warehouse is. We used to get oxidized stuff for our presses a lot
PenisWenisGenius@lemmynsfw.com 2 years ago
You should sneak into his garage in the night and sabotage all his aluminum ingots by hitting them with a hammer until they crack. When he tries to sneak into your garage to get revenge, he’ll wear out his hammer because your iron ingots are superior. That’ll show him.
JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 year ago
Wouldn’t they just bend? Aluminum is very flexible.
PenisWenisGenius@lemmynsfw.com 1 year ago
They’d bend a little but they would eventually crack. Aluminum ingots don’t bend like aluminum foil does.

Carbon is the best metal, ask any astrophysicist.
Gullible@sh.itjust.works 2 years ago
It’s been proven without a doubt that diamonds are the hardest metal of all time, if not just the hardest metal known to man.

Everyone knows Titanium is the best metal, fuck these nerds
You999@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Titanium is great up until you try to machine it. Now my boy platinum is where it’s at.

Gallium or bust.
It’s not really useful but it looks cool and it’ll eat away at both if their metals.
mojo_raisin@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s not really useful
I feel like I hear about it all the time in advanced tech like batteries and semi-conductors.
piccolo@ani.social 1 year ago
Without gallium blue leds wouldn’t exist. It’s also very useful in other semiconductors.
alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 1 year ago
Also LEDs and screens.
KillingTimeItself@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 years ago
i like uranium better.
Cursed as fuck metal.
gmtom@lemmy.world 2 years ago
God damn rustcucks can’t deal with their own inferiority. When’s the last time you even used pure iron for something instead of alloy, you fucking loser.🤡
Tabula_stercore@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Sad to see so low level of intellect in the comment section; can’t even spell the element aluminium correctly
Blackout@kbin.run 2 years ago
Aluminum is great, until you want to machine it. Then it's a gummy piece of shit.

Why is nobody here for-copper?
iiGxC@slrpnk.net 2 years ago
www.primaryconnections.org.au/…/corrosion.htm
aluminum actually corrodes quicker, but it oxidizes to a layer of aluminum oxide that seals out air and water, whereas iron has a permeable oxide that lets air and water get to the iron under the oxide. So in practice it doesn’t rust nearly as fast as iron
nexguy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Zinc is by FAR the best element. I also like Plutonium. It’s just fun to say. Plutonium. How’s your Plutonium? Good thank you.
The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 2 years ago
I would listen to this person’s extremely specific rant.
randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 2 years ago
Aluminum has always been my favorite element and metal. I feel the urge to punch this anon in his aluminum-hating fuckface.
Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works 2 years ago
Counterpoint for iron, stainless steal. Or 1014L (the L stands for lead) its .14% carbon and the lead makes it more dense and resistent to rust
Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 2 years ago
Iron is dogshit compared to aluminum
