I think the answer is obvious: because that’s what sells and is popular. There are all black cases to be found though.
dpkonofa@lemmy.world 1 year ago
And it’s an amazing case. Every other time I go to update my PCs, I do this little dance. I’ve done a back and forth between a Fractal case from this line and then some other case the next time I update and I always end up going back to the Fractals. They’re just very well designed and look great with plenty of airflow and fan mounting. I’m a big fan.
fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Both my desktop and my server are in Define R4s. Plenty of room, dead silent, and still good airflow for a silent case.
Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 1 year ago
Yeah. Computer fashion has been a thing since even before the blueberry imac and hello kitty purse macbook made computers status symbols. A current fashion trend is “RGBLEDs make gaming machines go brrrr!”
p5f20w18k@lemmy.world 1 year ago
This is the case I use for my home server :)
troglodytis@lemmy.world 1 year ago
They’re not.
You can.

Don’t know where your looking. Most are.

…when if you wanted a non-beige case with a window and lights, you had to cut a hole in it, paint it, and install cold-cathode tubes in it yourself.
shalafi@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Cold-cathode tubes please. I was soldering my own connectors and finding MB pins to jack into in 2002.
Joking aside, I got a lot of 20 ancient PCs off a dude in the Thrifty Nickel. Took months tearing them up and going crazy with the LEDs and parts. Still have some!
grue@lemmy.world 1 year ago

Cold-cathode tubes were popular starting in the '90s.

“Plain solid black case” *laughs in yellowing beige.
Blamemeta@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Does it have a turbo button?
ZagamTheVile@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Shit yes. And a key to turn it on.
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
So long as its metal, keep on going. Plastic has an unfortunate habit of breaking when its old.
oDDmON@lemmy.world 1 year ago
The urge to LEDify every bloody thing has never made sense to me.
I get having a discreet, physical indicator of activity, but having a USB cable that can light up a wall in a dark room, from LEDs on both ends? Too goddamn common now.
dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Uh. You can.
In fact, the vast majority of desktop computer cases in the world are plain black boxes (or grey, or beige, but black seems most popular among the major manufacturers like Dell and HP these days). That’s because the majority of PC’s in the world are actually boring business boxes squatting on untold numbers of office desks. Just, no one posts pictures of those online because no one gives a shit about the 4,897 identical low-spec computers some megacorporation bought and had delivered on a pallet.
The PC’s you’re seeing are gaming rigs, and gamers festoon their stuff with silly LED’s because it’s cool, or at least they think it’s cool, or possibly just because it’s a meme by now. Or, in some cases, the piece of enthusiast gear you want comes with RGB LED’s all over it anyway, whether you like it or not.
You can absolutely build a gaming PC without the LED stuff, including buying a plain non-windowed case for it. I have a machine like that sitting on my desk right now, in fact.
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
If I could have gotten the boring cases that HP, Dell, and the others make, I would have. But other than system integrators, you can’t really find stand alone plane cases.
dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I mean, like… Yes you can?
ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social 1 year ago
Like these aren't the "boring cases" you are referring to but they are black boxes with at least decent airflow since those boring HP,Dell, and other big system integrator use are pretty horrid for cpus gamers actually use. That was just from a cursory look of 2 case manufacturers .
inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Literally one minute, mostly for to mobile load times.
www.newegg.com/p/N82E16811147334
They make plenty of parts that don’t have LEDs and even then most of them have the option to turn them off.
Or do you just want to continue to yell at clouds?
NaoPb@eviltoast.org 1 year ago
Solid casea are still available and ao are parts without LEDs.
glimse@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Why do case manufacturers make cases that sell well? I don’t understand!
sbexpert@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Just filter out glass and LED in your search. There are plenty of plain black towers. They’re usually pretty cheap too, I think mine was $20.
Kolanaki@yiffit.net 1 year ago
Because people got bored of plain white, black or beige boxes and then manufacturers noticed if they slap colored lights on their shit, they can get people to spend more money on them. So now everything has lights.
EatYouWell@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Your mobo likely has a utility that can control a chunk of the lights. Usually GPUs do too.
Kolanaki@yiffit.net 1 year ago
The stuff on the inside of the case, yes. The mouse and keyboard I have I can just change the color. There is no “off” :(
vivadanang@lemm.ee 1 year ago
reminds me of the auto market - they can sell SUV’s for more… there are no more cheap handy pickups…
CmdrShepard@lemmy.one 1 year ago
I’m sure with a little late night cruise, you’ll have no trouble finding a cheap handy to pickup.
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
I have a sheet of paper that lives on top of my power light. Its soo bright, and its not even in my bedroom. I should throw a resistor inline there, I just can’t be bothered.
0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
I switched all of the bright UV or white leds with regular ones (green and red).

I don’t really watch South Park, but if you think I’m that clever, I’ll take that as a compliment ;)
FireTower@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s a minor thing in addition to what everyone else has pointed out but led parts helps with trouble shooting.
Fan not moving, but lit up? Your definitely getting power to it.

Black box on the floor gang represent
I’m not looking at my PC, take that led money and upgrade your monitor
The curved ultra wide OLED from Alienware is pretty rad
XEAL@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Stupid fads, sometimes customers are to blame, other times companies (SUVs plague, touch screens on cars, smarphone screen notches and removed conectors…).
And even worse than RGB everywhere… glass panels. Yes, of course, put something heavy and fragile on my already heavy PC. And a glass panel is an accident waiting to happen.
This is the case I wanted for a build a decade ago: quickhard.com/…/Caja-ANTEC-NINE-HUNDRED-EU-Negra-…
I finally ended up with this one earlier this year: en.sharkoon.com/product/37933
No glass. No included or purchased fan for the build has leds. However, I have to admit that I recycled a couple of old transparent fans with blue leds (14mm and 12mm) that were the best ones I had lying around, and they are installed behind the frontal dush mesh… which is behind the front grill panel.
Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I hate how tempered glass is the premium standard. I’d rather have glass that is easier to break if I fuck up but doesn’t have a chance to spontaneously shatter.
I had a TV stand do that once, luckily I was the only one there when it happened. If it had happened two nights earlier, it would have sprayed glass shards all over my sleeping daughter. It was energetic enough that I found some pieces I missed on the other side of the room when I was moving out.
Tempered glass furniture looks great, I’ll admit, but never again.
Blackout@kbin.social 1 year ago
Cause we are all just a few days away from becoming catboys in stockings on Linux machines. Give in to the RGB side and join us meow
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
No. I’m already on mint, and I’m commenting from a furry instance. How much credit do I get?
gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
My current build is in a Define XL R2 (it doubles as a very lazily implemented NAS)
My gf’s build is in a Define C (tempered glass, because the metal side model was sold out when we were building it)
Inktvip@lemm.ee 1 year ago
We have a bunch of torrent compacts at work and they’re honestly great cases too. Also very good at keeping high end parts cool at a low noise level.
I’ve always been a fan of closed Fractal cases. They do no-non sense right.
gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
And the build quality is just👌
Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Because rgb is popular. There are a bunch of standard cases but case makers need tk cater to what most people want because case manufacturing doesnt have the greatest margins due to size and cost of shipping.
A lot of the margins come from fans and lighting.
Delphia@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Because more and more building Pcs is a hobby and hobbyists love to tinker and show off their work.
When you play with tech its easy to forget just how small a market we are. Once you get past the people who just use their phone, and the people who get by with a basic chromebook, then the people who just buy a gaming laptop, the ex lease workstation crowd, then the people who buy prebuilts, and now even the subset of gamers who just use a docked steam deck… we really are a hobbyist community.
NewNewAccount@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I paid more for a black case without a window. I think the RGB trend is garish.
I do make an exception for tasteful red accent lighting.
Sabata11792@kbin.social 1 year ago
I paid the extra $60 to not worry about cable management. Hiding your shame cost extra.
I also ruined the original by sticking a suction cup phone mount on it. It fused to the plastic window.
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
I paid way to much for a Nice solid case. It was just such a pain to find. I wound up with a Fractal Design Define R5.
NewNewAccount@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I also have a Fractal!
ryan@the.coolest.zone 1 year ago
It's the style right now. Personally, I'm hoping for a "retro beige case that can hold modern hardware" era
because I have terrible taste.bluGill@kbin.social 1 year ago
I want the SGI purple to come back. I've never seen another computer that was pretty and tasteful, from anyone.
Chronographs@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Because some of us like the pretty lights, they’re cheap to include and the people that don’t like them can always turn them off
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
Some fan LEDs are directly connected to the fan power, so you can’t always turn them off.
Chronographs@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
That’s true, but really the exception rather than the rule
rynzcycle@kbin.social 1 year ago
The blue leds make the whole setup run cooler. And if you want a really fast build, get an aerodynamic case with a racing stripe.
But seriously, hard agree. I want a big, easy to open easy to access, metal box. With handles if it's possible I'll be using it for gigs etc.
Iamsqueegee@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Lian Li make nice all black aluminum cases in a variety of sizes.
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
They used to.
NegativeLookBehind@kbin.social 1 year ago
Bro don’t you want your rig to looking a fucking SPACESHIP??
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:STSCPanel.jpg looks like a pretty nice setup. No excess LEDs in sight.
TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 year ago
The Fractal Design 7 line has some all covered cases.
It’s just the trend de jure for computer case designs. I also have no desire to show off the parts inside my case and think the rainbow LEDs are a bit much. If I’m gonna throw a rave at home, I ain’t gonna light it with my GPU.
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
When I put my new machine together not too long ago I actually went with the Define R5. The only part I couldn’t get away from LEDs completely was the MB. I don’t think I could find the solid Define7 at the time.
Legisign@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Quite agree. It is next to impossible to find solid cases any more, because only transparent ones are sold. The one manufacturer left still making solid cases seems to be Fractal Design.
kindenough@kbin.social 1 year ago
Very happy with my North. Black one with the mesh sidepanel.
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
They were all that I could find that I would call a quality case. I went with the Define R5.
Cort@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I always recommend the Corsair 200R. Just checked and they finally stopped selling it after a decade
PlasterAnalyst@kbin.social 1 year ago
Just buy a rack mount case

Red LEDs make your pc faster, blue ones make it run cooler and green ones save energy.
theKalash@feddit.ch 1 year ago
This is a comment I would have given gold to.
If you name a charity/good cause with a straight forward payment process, I’ll donate 10 bucks to them.
MajorHavoc@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Ooh. This would make a great tradition, here. Count me in.
givesomefucks@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yeah, you gotta leave em green while idling to save the environment, then when you fire up Fortnight, shift to red to get the Xtra fps per second
kakes@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
The way I learned it is that blue ones make it run faster, green ones save energy, and red ones give a 4% bonus to production.
mittyta@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yeah, factorio bro!
But now I have understood factorio really mixed up red and blue
bstix@feddit.dk 1 year ago
No. Da red wuns go fasta.
FaceDeer@kbin.social 1 year ago
Ah yes, I recall reading about these features. The yellow ones increase your RAM, the purple ones cloak your IP address, and the black ones reduce your chances of hardware failures ('cuz a black LED never burns out).
kurcatovium@lemm.ee 1 year ago
No wonder you so rarely see yellow fans when you can easily download more RAM when needed.
SolOrion@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Cuz you’ve never seen a purple IP address
l_b_i@yiffit.net 1 year ago
If they cycle through do you get all of that at the same time?
ShadowCat@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yes, that’s why RGB is recommended so much
rikudou@lemmings.world 1 year ago
Nah, it’s sequential.
don@lemm.ee 1 year ago
OP not knowing this means OP’s banned from having a pc. Sorry OP, them’s the rules.
