I was sick of seeing political stuff on the shitposting group so I started bombarding it with corn until it stopped. I had happened to have a bunch of corn pictures saved on my phone because I had flooded my friend’s discord with corn pictures just to goof on her.
It spiraled into a glorious corn filled nightmare insanity, and as someone from Ohio, I appreciate that.
I think the beans came up later because people like to play with themes.
Magnum@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
No? The beans came before the corn…
agent_nycto@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Then maybe the beans came first idk, I’m not gonna go back and check.

thank you for this well-done psyop. we really need more non-political memes.
here, have a picture of the Three Sisters as a reward:

about the beans: look for top all time
After the wave of newcomers lowered lemmy started to have some "weekly" phases where other memes became the meta like the german pedalo or moths and many others. But as a moth fren i bring some moth memes back from time to time :)

If someone could also explain why half the post titles have the word “rule” in them, that would also be helpful
SacralPlexus@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Disclosure: I don’t know the full lore and I’m only answering because nobody else has.
My vague understanding is that this is unique to the ‘196’ community which has a community rule that every post must include the word “rule” in the title post. So it’s super common to see because it’s an active community. Beyond that I don’t really understand what the community is about as it seems to have a random variety of posts.
chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
The 196 community has an (unenforced) rule that you must post every time you visit, so they’re posts that are following the rule.

were you around on reddit when they were obsessed with bacon and narwhals? this is basically the equivalent but for lemmy. if you were not around for that I don’t know how to explain it to you.
musubibreakfast@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Bruh, bacon was different. I don’t think anyone here is going to build an entire brand and livelihood around bacon. Sometimes I think the whole bacon thing might’ve been a government PSI op.

build an entire brand and livelihood around beans

chefdano3@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
It used to be beans.
rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 weeks ago
I think it’s fair to call me an elder lemming at this point, as I recall the reasons for both. I signed up on .world with my first account on the last day before the infamous APIocalypse.
Along with myself, a lot of us were putting effort into posting good stuff, upvoting, and generally having a lot of positive interactions. Someone on !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world posted a picture with a can of beans with a caption along the lines of “I hear that lemmy will upvote anything. Here’s a picture of beans”. It quickly became the most upvoted post of all time.
As lemmy culture developed into a deeply political space, it began flooding !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world with American politics. People got sick of it, and people started doing "we’re posting x now until politics stops. There had been a couple rounds of various themes, and then someone announced “that’s it, I’m sick of politics everywhere. We’re posting corn”. Cornposting has become the default political purge over there.
mamg22@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Thanks for the explanation! I didn’t use to check Lemmy frequently up until recently, so the cornposting has always been this strange thing i saw sometimes, but never understood it. Now it makes sense
popekingjoe@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
We also did it with vans for some reason. So throw that in your history notes.

Looks at profile age, 1 years 7 months.
Huh, guess I’ll just take prehistoric ass out of here and go chip flints.
TerHu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
well, they said their first account was on .world, and the one you checked the age of is on blahaj. so, an age discrepancy is to be expected.

seems like political shit ended up fertilizing good crops, then. :)
(btw i fully support breaking political content on non-political communities because it deters new users to the fediverse and also because it’s hella annoying, itchy even)
