If they still existed they would probably have moved into existing human-mined tunnels. Whether they’d wait until we abandoned them or chase us out, or help us build them, would depend on our relationship with them
Agent641@lemmy.world 3 months ago
What if we domesticated them and used them to mine coal?
Death_Equity@lemmy.world 3 months ago
“A train detrained in the tunnel due to a giant sloth sleeping on the tracks. No word of survivors at the time of recording, but officials say that they are expecting multiple fatalities including the sloth.”
tetris11@lemmy.ml 3 months ago
that sounds like the plot of Ring of Fire
HexagonSun@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
The tiny thumbnail for this looked like a belly button on my phone, had no idea what I was tapping on at first

A(lmost)NSFW
Death_Equity@lemmy.world 3 months ago
The fun part is that you were more curious than apprehensive and were willing to subject yourself to whatever the Internet brought you for the day.
radicalautonomy@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Big enough to be comfortable used by humans
Pffffbtbtbt, housing crisis schmousing crisis. There’s your answer, chaps.
BadlyDrawnRhino@aussie.zone 3 months ago
Just wait until some oil baron says that sloth-dug tunnels is the way to “deal” with climate change.
Death_Equity@lemmy.world 3 months ago
If they are willing to bring back giant burrowing sloths, I am willing to experience the “tunnel hovels to escape climate change” timeline so long as I get to be a sloth supervisor.
Cataphract@lemmy.ml 3 months ago
Coober Peby Australia has you covered!
dumbass@leminal.space 3 months ago
So my take from this is, the higher above ground level a sloth is, the lazier it gets.
Zagorath@aussie.zone 3 months ago
I heard if you turn out the lights and kiss your crush, you can find a way out of the tunnel.
tetris11@lemmy.ml 3 months ago
Teacher says, every time a bell rings, a secret tunnel collapses on two lovers.
Cadeillac@lemmy.world 3 months ago
I may not be remembering correctly, but didn’t Sloth dig the tunnel in Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood?
viking@beehaw.org 3 months ago
I’m having a hard time not seeing a belly button.
Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 3 months ago
And what happened to the giant sloths?
name_NULL111653@pawb.social 3 months ago
Earth warms up from ice age. Big sloth too fuzzy. Loses fuzz and tries to climb tree. Big sloth too big. Small big sloth gets smaller, climbs tree.
LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 months ago
Lol I know this is a joke but they died, tree sloths existed back then too and are a totally separate group of animals. They didn’t evolve from the animals that dug this tunnel.

TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 3 months ago
We domesticated them and made purse sloths.

I wasn’t sure if this was true or a weird misunderstanding or conspiracy type thing. Seems to be true. Here is an accessible writeup: bbc.com/…/20231127-brazils-mysterious-tunnels-mad…

You’re confused about what a meme is!
Have a better informed day
RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 3 months ago
An idea that spreads through a culture becoming a commonly known and repeated concept?
9point6@lemmy.world 3 months ago
But it’s been shared
Given the community we’re in—what’s a meme?

These giant slots dug these giants tunnels to hide from whom?
Tikiporch@lemmy.world 3 months ago
To hide from their responsibility.

Sloth city.
chemicalprophet@lemm.ee 3 months ago
That’s in the south, right? I heard a lot of humanists and that ilk are trying to stop them from building it?
Death_Equity@lemmy.world 3 months ago
You are thinking of Pig City in Georgia.
Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website 3 months ago
Can you imagine being stuck in the dawn of human agriculture, and you seek shelter in a nice cave that you found… And then a Giant Sloth just lumbers in after a bit.
I mean, I imagine any Homo species of the time would know not to go inside one of these, but still.
Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 3 months ago
So not giant sloths specifically, but Australian Aboriginals have oral histories describing megafauna that went extinct around the same time period
blasstula@lemmy.world 3 months ago
wow, that implies an aboriginal oral history spanning at least 40,000 years if true
tetris11@lemmy.ml 3 months ago
Megatheriums were herbivores, so it would be like spending the night with an elephant.
Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website 3 months ago
I hear what you’re saying, and I recognize anyone inside would be safe from being eaten… However, as with an elephant, I wouldn’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night having intruded upon their home.
mihor@lemmy.ml 3 months ago

It was during ATLA, they helped evacuate earth kingdom citizens when the fire nation took over the kingdom.
