Icanhas and Failblog were hilarious back in the day. I think that CEO Ben whatshisname wrecked it by commercializing it.

2006 we weren’t posting image macros en-masse like this. They may have existed but I don’t remember seeing a lot of these until at least 2009-2010
Keep in mind the general population wasn’t really on Facebook until 2007 and people weren’t posting this stuff to myspace
NannerBanner@literature.cafe 2 months ago
Maybe you weren’t, but in the places they were born they were quite massive. Enough that the rules officially said you could be banned for it.
lime@feddit.nu 2 months ago
yeah it was definitely more niche. i remember when the motiwational poster format made way to the advice dog format, and at that paint we banically just copy-pasted the images around different forums.
Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 months ago
You’re totally right! They were there, but sequestered to very specific places. You wouldn’t have run into a lot of memes or image macros at all unless you were part of the big sites for “internet culture”: LUE, SA, YTMND, /b/, then finally more mainstream stuff like Digg, Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit. Shoot, “memes” had a whole different meaning than they do now! They weren’t even CALLED memes in th’ early 2000s even though the term existed, they began as being called “fads” and “meme” caught on in the early to mid 2000s!

Why is philosoraptor crying?

Those aren’t tears, it’s a face tattoo. They were all the rage back then in the before times. Example A:

SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 months ago
You misspelled “image macros.”
LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Yeah my first thought was that those aren’t memes, they are the “guidance” I guess. The words are the message, the background sets the tone. Bad luck Brian isn’t the meme, he’s what sets the stage that lets you know the tone for the hook.
If someone says:
“Toenail needs cutting Kick a brick wall”
Youd be like okay that’s excessive … but you put chaos wolf behind it and your like, I shouldve expected that
lobut@lemmy.ca 2 months ago
I remember when a meme was coined by Richard Dawkins before the Internet meme became the standard.

axo10tl@sopuli.xyz 2 months ago
It’s the hallmark of the “Advice Animals” category of memes.
butwhyishischinabook@anarchist.nexus 2 months ago
It’s just how they were. That’s like asking “why are they all screenshots underneath plain text on a white background?” re memes now.
SaltyIceteaMaker@lemmy.ml 2 months ago
well easy answer. cause its easy to make, and the white background ensure test readability that may be lost if overlayed on the meme itself.
lambipapp@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Rage comics, shit bricks-memes and socially awkward penguin. An then came nyancat

The thing about this though, is that before the advice dog and the impact font era, memes had a lot more variety. To me, this was watered down normie shit.

jaaake@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I miss the days when the only things identifiable as memes required text drawn in all caps white Impact font with black outlines, over literally any image.
