Plenty of evidence of very successful mid-budget games that are hugely successful. “Indie” is now a pretty large and unhelpful term. Supergiant is a fairly large company, not just “a single guy” like in the case of Stardew Valley. Even Concerned Ape hired on a team for ongoing support and ports for Stardew. And Team Cherry may be small, but also not actually just 2 people like is the common understanding. And Astro Bot may be made by a fairly large studio owned by the biggest console platform owner but you couldn’t seriously call last year’s GOTY a “quadruple A game”. Hell, even Triple is generous.
I get the malaise and disappointment around the top 5 games all being like a decade old live service games that all make up ,ore than like 80% of the industry’s play time and revenue, but I’m pretty sure LocalThunk is feeling pretty good about their success right now. There are plenty of really great games that are not just bargain bin junk while also not being massive industry stompers like Fortnite.
So yeah, that was a WILD take.

lol, lots of folks responding to me doing the exact thing i was warning about. Honestly, just pick one that seems like it offers what you’re looking for.
If you want it to feel kind of familiar to windows, pick KDE as your desktop environment. you can have this in pretty much any distro, some make it easier to set as part of the install process.
If you want it to be harder to fuck up, but with less flexibility for customization or being on the bleeding edge of support, pick an immutable distro like bazzite
If you wan full flexibility and the added danger and complexity that brings, go for an arch-based distro. lot of great comments below too with actually good details and not just “people are dumb for using X, they should use Y because i’m smarter” - specifically dubyakay and Holytimes are offering some great details.

lol, i know you’re joking, but this is the kinda thing i think actually really confuses and scares people who are unfamiliar with linux. There absolutely are really great distros out there that aren’t the big players, but for a newcomer they can probably stick to a big distro that seems nice and if they start getting the bug they can come back for a deeper dive. deciding to just do it is way more important than getting it “right” imo.

Tbh it actually doesn’t matter that much. There’s like a million different distros, but really there’s like 3 base distros (yes Linux nuts, this is an oversimplification) of Debian, Fedora, and Arch. Ubuntu has gotten a lot of hate lately for their choice of forced package manager, but it’s probably fine. It’ll matter way more to you what desktop environment you select. I’d recommend looking into Bazzite for gaming. It’s based on fedora and it has a bunch of gaming stuff built in, but also does great for anything else. It’s made to be the steamOS for anything not a steam deck. Go with KDE for a windows-like desktop experience.

Luigi’s Mansion on original GameCube hardware. Well, it’s pretty modified - BT controller board, memcard pro, EON MKII for digital video output, picoboot to load from sd, but the game processing HW is original lol.
Also, Rise of the Tomb Raider was easily the best one of those. I loved that game.

nice! I bought this one like 15 years ago for like $20 from a guy in a mall parking lot, advertised as broken. it had like “University of Washington” written on it, so presumably he got it from a school several years before he sold it to me. Initially I wanted to gut it to make a fish tank, but i was lazy and also that was a stupid idea. Instead I fixed it and installed Mac OS Classic on it, as well as marathon.

I’ve got 2 PS1’s, and the one most visible in this photo is an SCPH-1001 with the RCA jacks on the back. I haven’t modded it because I’ve got better ways to play backups of PS1 games and it’s not quite worth the effort. I have used TonyHax on it though, which does the job. the other PSOne is barely visible right next to it. I got it from an estate sale and it actually came with a modchip! So i can play backup discs on that one if i want.

It allows it to accept higher quality analog signal input for old video game systems. RGB separates the signals into 4 (in this case) separate inputs, one each for Red, Green, and Blue colors in the image, as well as sync on the fourth input. the image is much clearer than you’d have typically seen from systems on this TV back in the day using composite, or S-video if you were fancy. It’s the highest quality analog signal you can get for a CRT.

just did the math, I’ve averaged about $165/yr on steam, with very little (though not none) microtransactions. like maybe less than $50 total in 15 years.
