As another reply said already
Imagine cable tv! (in the US at least, and, it seems, Canada, too)
It is so absurd until you realize people already accepted that shit… wtf!!!
Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
Yes, but this is german and in Germany most TV is free with ads or paid without ads.
NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Its like going to the local cinema, ads before the movie.
gmgmgm@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I went to a Regal Cinema for the first time a few months ago and they played 20 minutes of ads that began at the advertised movie start times. Insane.
can@sh.itjust.works 2 months ago
And that’s always been bs. But at least then I can get tmy seats online and show up “late”
ElCanut@jlai.lu 2 months ago
You just described Amazon Prime TV
Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 months ago
Imagine paying money to watch YouTube.
Resonosity@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Imagine not using NewPipe, which has no ads and can play music in the background while you use other apps simultaneously (Samsung only feature I’ve heard, but still)
Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
I use vanced, but NewPipe is also great.
greencactus@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Or imagine installing uBlock and not seeing ads at all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
YouTube really promoted uBlock more than uBlock could even promote itself

Lol that is gold
shadowfax13@lemmy.ml 2 months ago
The only benefit now, but what if they start to serve 30 non-skippable ads without premium and ONLY 5 with premium, what a deal! Right?
the “lesser evil” strategy is so hot rn
Grimy@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Firefox with ad blocker? You are wasting your money.
astanix@lemmy.world 2 months ago
My wife uses a TV to watch YouTube My kid uses a phone My other kid uses a tablet
Saying just use ad block isn’t feasible for everyone.
Lichtblitz@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
If you use something Android based for watching YouTube on the TV (some TVs, fireTV stick, etc.), you can: github.com/yuliskov/SmartTube?tab=readme-ov-file
I haven’t watched a single Ad on YouTube on TV (SmartTube), mobile (ReVanced), or PC (Firefox + uBlock origin) since it became unbearable… five years ago or so?
Funkwonker@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 months ago
SmartTube for TV and ReVanced/uYouPlus for Andriod/IOS devices. SmartTube can be tricky to set up depending on the TV, but the mobile apps are relatively simple to get working.
JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 2 months ago
On a TV use SmartTube. On QN Android device (phone or tablet) use LibreTube (or InnerTune for music)
nl4real@lemmy.world 2 months ago
uBlock origin and Sponsorblock work for me on Firefox Android Beta.
swag_money@lemmy.world 2 months ago
i watch YouTube on my phone with ff+ubo
richardisaguy@lemmy.world 2 months ago
get youtube revanced for both phone and tablet at least
DogWater@lemmy.world 2 months ago
And I don’t pay for Spotify or any other music service. Premium yt videos is just a bonus
unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
Do creator even get any real amount of money from the money collected through premium?
Natanael@slrpnk.net 2 months ago
They do, and based on reported stats it gets them more per viewer. No idea if anybody’s audited those stats though
morrowind@lemmy.ml 2 months ago
They get 2/3, as opposed to 55% of ad revenue and nothing from adblock users
SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 2 months ago
It used to be free AND ad-free.
Robin@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Sure but that’s obviously unsustainable
driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 2 months ago
I have ad blocker on my pc, but pay for youtube premium for the TV app and the youtube music.
JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 2 months ago
Use LibreTube or InnerTune, no need to pay. I’ve heard good things about SmartTube too
queermunist@lemmy.ml 2 months ago
How long until that’s just made illegal?
Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 months ago
Ugh, you didn’t even pay for Premium Plus?
Bloody peasant…
JigglySackles@lemmy.world 2 months ago
And this is why i,won’t start paying them money. They will never be content and will just keep pushing ads further and further.
AWittyUsername@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Yeah the price will increase or ads or both. But it never just stops. It’s never enough
Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 months ago
The growth must continue!
Even when you’ve reached complete market saturation…
EmperorHenry@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
This is why you get anti-anti-adblock userscripts in tampermonkey inside of your browser and/or the same inside of adguard for windows. Along with an adblocking DNS
Give them an inch and they’ll take 1000 miles. No more money for google, ever.
joyjoy@lemm.ee 2 months ago
Don’t disable uBlock Origin, even when you have YT premium. Using Chrome counts as disabling uBlock Origin
EmperorHenry@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
Also, don’t pay for youtube premium if they’re going to serve you ads either way
EmperorHenry@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
Brave still allows uBO to work.
Empricorn@feddit.nl 2 months ago
I feel like you didn’t fully understand that the line can go up. At the expense of everything…
ChillPill@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Line MUST go up.

Phegan@lemmy.world 2 months ago
What is the benefit of premium if you still have to watch ads?
And009@reddthat.com 2 months ago
The logo gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment
icedterminal@lemmy.world 2 months ago
This reference will never get old tbh.
RandomVideos@programming.dev 2 months ago
You can get that logo for free with youtube revanced

The second I get an ad on premium I cancel my subscription. Blocking ads on apple tv wasn’t easy, but Ill find a way
Paddzr@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Get rid of the apple TV next if that doesn’t let you.

Same not paying a dollar if they do that shit. I’d rather become a patron of the channels I like.
TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 months ago
How is this a shitpost? Is it a fake screenshot?
dragonlobster@programming.dev 2 months ago
Web: Firefox + uBlock Origin Mobile (Android only): Grayjay TV (Android): Smarttube iPhone/iPad: Brave Browser
Enjoy

these posts are just getting ridiculous. USE. BRAVE. OR. FIREFOX.
Tuxman@sh.itjust.works 2 months ago
If it’s true and I get ads on my Premium (which… to be fair I’m not paying full price anyway 😅), it may be the last push I needed to finally start reading books again…
Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 2 months ago
raises the question why pay for premium
JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 months ago
YouTube ads cost about $0.026 (two and a half cents) per 30 seconds of viewing. This is called cpv.
It’s not fair that ss a viewer I’m not able to bid on my own to show myself an empty ad slot. I’m looking at the price of premium and it definitely seems like more revenue for YouTube than I’d give them from ads.
Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 months ago
What ads? (Firefox and adblocker)
vordalack@lemm.ee 2 months ago
Books don’t have intrusive ads. Stop consuming YouTube slop.
LuuTuyen@lemmy.world 2 months ago
That’s why i never bought YouTube premium Seeing ads in premium is ridiclous, For fuck sake!
Klnsfw@lemmynsfw.com 2 months ago
It’s probably a bug. And to excuse the devs at Youtube, this is the first and only Premium client.
RagingRobot@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I have premium too once I saw an ad and complained and it turned out to be a bug. I even had engineers reach out with questions when they were fixing the issue.
Maybe that has happened here? They have announced any changes.
bitwolf@lemmy.one 2 months ago
I get ads on premium sometimes. I think it’s a fluke but def unacceptable
tomcatt360@lemmy.zip 2 months ago
Those are some preem ads, choom.
veganpizza69@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Check if you still have premium?
helloyanis@jlai.lu 2 months ago
For everyone on Android, you can just patch the youtube app using ReVanced, which will remove ads, add sponsorblock, allow you to hide shorts and the “People also watched” sections. It can be pretty tricky to patch if you don’t know what you’re doing so feel free to tell me if you run into any issues. If you don’t care about the algorithm and your feed, you can get the third-party client NewPipe, it’s FOSS but sometimes crashes while reading some videos. Pick one!
emrsmsrli@lemmy.world 2 months ago
lol here we are, just after a few weeks when people were defending how yt premium was the best subscription plan ever on Lemmy. people deserve to be scammed like this tbh
96VXb9ktTjFnRi@feddit.nl 2 months ago
I thought they didn’t target children with their ads. Did I imagine that or is a barbie a product aimed at adults in Germany?
Kilometers_OBrien@startrek.website 2 months ago
If I’m paying monthly for a service without ads and I see a single (1) advertisement, I should at least get a month of free subscription because the other party is in breach of contract.
nek0d3r@lemmy.world 2 months ago
A few years ago I got this experience on mobile and posted about it on r/assholedesign, but it was autoremoved as a banned repost even though I didn’t see anything like it. Yet another ban happy subreddit, I’m glad to be out of that place. This is truly awful though, and why I’m happy to use revanced.
simplejack@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Probably the lower tier of premium that’s being tested in Germany.
androidauthority.com/youtube-premium-lite-returns…
lugal@sopuli.xyz 2 months ago
The add is German for sure so that would make sense
gratux@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 months ago
It also says “DE” next to the logo, so yeah.
obinice@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Huh weird, the only reason to use Premium is to cut out the adverts.
“Would you like to buy Premium?” “Ooh, what do I get?” “YOU GET NOTHING! GOOD DAY SIR!”
pineapplelover@lemm.ee 2 months ago
good day by sir
LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Less ads I guess? Idk
Anivia@feddit.org 2 months ago
If Premium Lite was like described in the article, just ad free YouTube without other features like YouTube Music, but for half the price, then it would actually be a good deal
But since the user is getting ads it seems like something else
MacStache@programming.dev 2 months ago
The poor-mans-premium. Subpremium. Ingenious.
