“Forrest Gump” is one of the most overrated movies in recent decades.
Glemek@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Might be an unpopular opinion that the 90s aren’t recent decades anymore
fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 1 month ago
I would say if people are alive from that era its recent. Humans don’t live long.
KneeTitts@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Ok then, “Forrest Gump” is one of the most overrated movies in history. Honestly I hated everything about it and I never will understand peoples reverence for it. Shawshank is an infinitely better movie.
Dookieman12@piefed.social 1 month ago
The Shawshank Redemption should have won Best Picture that year. The only reason it didn’t is because it’s a sad story and people like happy stories more.

The biggest road block getting in the way of bike activism and expanded safety and spread of non-car transportation is the bike activists themselves behaving inconsistently and demanding strange, contradictory rulesets and concessions.
rumschlumpel@feddit.org 1 month ago
Bigger than the anti-bike lobbyism backed by multi-billion $ corporations? Also, which country? I’d be surprised if bike activists showed such consistent behavior across national borders.
Tidesphere@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Honestly, if you told me bike lobbyists were putting in spoilers to advocate for nonsense instead of clear common sense solutions I would believe you.
fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 1 month ago
Car people, in fact all groups of people also behave this way.
Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 1 month ago
I’m probably gonna disagree with you once I read your other comment expanding on your views, but right now, I agree. The Vehicular Cycling style advocated by John Forester has been a huge detriment to cycling safety. Here’s a 90 minute video essay expanding on how John Forester ruined cycling in America: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRPduRHBhHI
nanometer1625@thelemmy.club 1 month ago
You have me curious. What kind of contradictions?
Tidesphere@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Like, a lot of their behavior seems to be centered around gaining respect and focusing on having car drivers defer to bikes, while bikes slough off responsibility and behave dangerously.
For example, bike lanes. I, as a person who primarily drives a car, believe that what should happen is that the curb should be extended into the road, and bike lanes put up, on the curb, next to the sidewalk. If the goal is mitigating harm in the event of accident, then placing bikes beyond the curb will be the safest movement, rather than having them be a dedicated lane literally in the road. Having them be, ideally, up on the curb in their own dedicated lane is the safest solution we can come up with. The second, is that if there is no dedicated lane, they should be on the sidewalk not on the street.
We can do the math on collisions. A soft body going under 15 miles per hour with high alertness and high reaction time (a biker) is less likely to collide with another soft body going under 5 miles per hour with high alertness and high reaction time (a pedestrian), and if they do happen to collide, the injury will be very minimal.
But a soft body going under 15 miles per hour colliding with a 2 ton metal machine going 30 mph with lower reaction time (a car) is going to be more likely and lead to far more intense injuries for the biker.
But for some reason bike advocates don’t want the safer option, they want to be in the road. They want to be in the road with the cars while cars give them deference and while also completely ignoring traffic laws that vehicles on the road are meant to be following, including them.
I live in a large metro area, and I have not once seen a biker follow any kind of traffic laws. They don’t stop at stop signs, they don’t indicate turns, they don’t even stop at stop lights. They swerve out of the bike lane, into the crosswalk so that they can count as ‘pedestrians’ and then swerve back into the bike lane once they’ve gotten to the other side.
And given that, legally speaking, if there is any collision between my car and a biker, I am automatically considered at fault because I’m operating a motor vehicle, I want there to be as little chance of that as possible.
Like, I’ve got a long rant going here, but don’t get me wrong, what I want is for my town to be safer for bicycle travel, and for all of us to reduce our dependency on cars for travel, but when I see the way bikers behave it makes it hard for me to believe that that’s what they want.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 month ago
i see that, thats what happened in the west coast. now they dont need to adhere to red lights and get ticketed, or they become annoying and ride very slow in the middle of a street, and gets mad if you get close to them while stopping. also they dont slow down when pedestrians in the way too.

Sending humans to Mars is morally wrong.
There is a small chance that there is some other independent origin of life. Sending humans there with our clouds of microbes would make it impossible to discover.
We should wait until we’ve properly inspected it with sterilized robots. I figure this might take a few hundred years, but there’s no hurry. It’s not like Mars is going away.
Cruxifux@feddit.nl 1 month ago
I dont even understand the appeal of populating mars. Like its a big red dust bowl. Like shittier than the shittiest desert. Realistically, without some seriously sci fi shit to terraform the place, why would you want to live there? Unless you like being inside for the rest of your life.
Pyro@pawb.social 1 month ago
I think it’s part of our monkey brain, want to expand. Add in the “everything here sucks I could do it better” and you want to go somewhere else. We are out of places to set up on “free land” on earth so to the stars we look
VelvetPinkOtter123@lemmy.world 1 month ago
You don’t know what you don’t know
Get out there, do something new, see what you learn
Really long term, Earth is doomed. Not Climate Change, the sun will literally die one day. If humanity is to survive, we need to leave Earth and eventually our solar system
Waiting until the sun is expanding to start working on this problem is a lot like the issues we have with climate change. “Not my problem” type of attitude.
In your defense, the time length between climate change and the death of the sun is beyond massive, but still, it’s the same kind of thinking. You don’t need to leave Earth today and while people in the future probably will for any number of reasons, so what, let them figure it out, right?
We’re humans, this is what we do… we explore. Lets go
darthelmet@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Mars isn’t going anywhere, but people are. If you want to experience seeing humans make it to mars, it has to happen in your lifetime.
That said, I do think you have a valid point. I do think we have some responsibility to carefully research potential signs of life on other planets before we potentially contaminate it or risk bringing anything back with us.

they should eliminate the way jurors are selected, mostly because its poisoned fruit from the tree. because people are inconvenienced the moment they get the summons. and have a jury hiring selection instead, paid an actual wage of that state to be a juror, but have alot of them to prevent biases and its volunteering not “conscripted” by rotating between groups, because alot of retired people, or people who want to be on jurors never get CHOSEN. at the moment most jurors are biased asf in most cases, of the types they choose.
osanna@lemmy.vg 1 month ago
I want to be a on a jury as I’m unemployed (disabled) and have a lot of free time. I also have a pretty big interest in criminal justice. I am in my forties. I have never been summoned to be a juror. Sucks.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 month ago
so far i have gotten almost every year since i started voting except early covid. and almost on cue everytime i have voted(like 6months later)
GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I agree with this - I think that professional jurors should have a an Associates degree in criminal justice and/or paralegal. They should get paid a fair wage. They should have to travel so as to not become too cozy with prosecutors/defense lawyers and judges. You could have jurors that are a specialist in different types of crime which would make the lawyers have to work harder since they couldn’t just overwhelm the uneducated (in that area of the law). As you said it would get people that are wanting to participate to be part of it as well
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 month ago
they would be in a pool of jurors, and use a lottery system. alot of retired people, and non-retired want to be part of it, why not put them in a large pool. and then use the "general public as a backup.
JamesTBagg@lemmy.world 1 month ago
No, the state hiring you on temporarily for a case is much different than having professional jurors. Professional jury corruption would begin immediately (like any professional lifetime bureaucrat or politician.) Add the education requirements and you’ve eliminated the “Jury of your peers.”
Specialist witnesses are already a thing, and a thing often corrupted.
0x0@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
No such think as your peers, jurys should be abolished entirely.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 month ago
and peers can easily being fluenced mroe easily too, given the many high profile cases. even in the non-profiled ones, there are sitll extreme biases anyways.

Nirvana and The Beatles are super over rated and are only well known because they sold out/were promoted at the right place time so that record industry fat cats could use them to cash in on counter cultures.
Also Elvis/Led Zeppelin/Eminem stole music from black people and made money by making it ok for rich white kids to listen to.
Also, Drake is a pussy ass wannabe rich kid from the suburbs.

Social media treats Asian racism as highly offensive. All because a restaurant puts a sign that says they can’t come in.
The US has racism where they threaten your life. They pull out guns, call police, chase you out. Sundown towns still exist. I would rather have a sign than told “We don’t serve your kind” any day.

Lemmy tends to stigmatize usage if AI because of environmental impact.
I think using AI casually to shorten search for information or to create an image to be amused of or to use as reference to create my own art is perfectly acceptable.
Shit, each day I’m playing videogames, which burn much more electricity than a request to AI which translates to calculation of a function on several matrices. This is nowhere near calculating thousands of textured polygons 144 times a second.
I won’t pay for AI tho if it becomes payed or subscription-only. Fuck it.
Also I’m a programmer and I’ve never used AI to write code for me, and I think it’s terrible idea because it will make me too relaxed and dumb, leeching all the skill from me. Also it is useless for anything relatively complex as it will create more problems (bugs) than solve, and it will be unable to fix them. Treat this as a side note and not an addition to my unpopular opinion about AI, because this part I think is popular.

Watching porn is morally problematic.
Most people aren’t paying for their porn. They’re watching stuff uploaded, for free/pirated, often without the involvement or approval of the people involved.
Porn also normalizes extreme acts - things like choking, which is more dangerous than actually whipping someone.

People take the “extrovert” and “introvert” way to far. Instead of being an observation of behavior, they take it to extremes, try turning it into a “quirky” personality and then role-play it everywhere. All due to social media. They talk about it like people who believe in astrology talk about astrology. And then they pretend they’re super happy, when they’re actually miserable and depressed but refuse to think their “introvert” persona is the issue.

Daniel Radcliffe isnt as talented or even remotely attractive as everyone says.
JK Rowling is a POS shrew and all and she deserves to be prosecuted for her many actions but generally I think Daniel Radcliffe is a very mediocre at best actor and a complete sellout that would put Shane Gillis and Metallica to shame.
Also he’s considering letting his own son watch the HBO Harry Potter show without even hesitation, he’s pretty much a Judas to trans people.
Doubling down on your beliefs and giving money to terfs is no ethical way to entertain you own kid.
