- Comment on Why is AOC a big deal? She just speaks common sense and calls out absurdity. Have we really gone that far off the rails where we don't do it ourselves? 3 days ago:
Didn’t she defeat the Democratic incumbent to get on the ballot for her seat? Oh that’s right, she defeated the Democratic caucus chair, so hardly “picked by the DNC”.

Virulation - using a small amount of a virus to infect people to hopefully gain resistance - came to Europe through India. I’m 99% sure it wasn’t Catholicism that was responsible.

I think the idea comes from central and south American police who hide the identities of their police to prevent retaliation from organized crime, who are often very well funded and have no qualms about torturing and murdering random people to ensure the law remains powerless to stop their reign of fear and terror.
However, in this case it is to prevent the police themselves from answering to the courts, and to hide themselves from public scrutiny. Even if you are not breaking the law, America’s legal system is brutal and destructive, and they know that and don’t want to face it themselves.

Huh. With my impacted wisdom tooth they just broke it in half with a hammer and then twisted the pieces out with some calipers. The anesthesia was good, so I didn’t feel pain, but the crunching and scraping sounds were… off-putting.

In the late Middle Ages some scholars argued that there could not be humans in the southern hemisphere… a.k.a. antipodes
The idea was that it gets hotter and hotter as you go further south. Eventually it would get too hot for people to survive, certainly at the equator. So you can’t cross to the temperate parts of the southern hemisphere.
The Bible doesn’t mention creating any other people on the other side of the planet, and none can get there from the northern hemisphere, so therefore they must not exist. Q.E.D.

Banning cars and planes will help a bit, but it’s really everything. Concrete emits carbon dioxide. Raising animals emits carbon dioxide. Moving goods around emits carbon dioxide. And so on…
But in principle you are right!

Aviation is about 2.5% of global emissions.
In the long run then yes, we need carbon neutral fuels, but it should be possible for people to fly a little and not destroy the planet.

Interesting. I was going to reply that I have been in plenty of traffic jams on the Autobahn that did not have such a lane, but that was indeed more than 10 years ago!

I have a friend who is also a foot anti-fetishist. I find being revolted by feet equally inexplicable to being aroused by them, but both are fine I guess.

Possibly because in the past there was a notion that doctors would lie to their patients “for their own good”, and that the doctor’s decision about your care was something you had to just accept.
The notion that patients could advocate for their own care arose during the boomers’ lifetime.

Most people are really interesting if you get to know them.
I definitely don’t understand most people, but that doesn’t mean I dislike them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
