Come to nebula.
No AI voices there.

But some categories are completely devoid of content because its an invite only platform
mech@feddit.org 1 month ago
Yes, that’s how you keep AI slop out.
CorrectAlias@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
Suit yourself but I think it makes Nebula have better quality. It’s quality over quantity.
Banana@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
I didn’t have an invite i just joined through Jacob Geller’s YouTube channel
Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 month ago
For the creators?
mitram@sopuli.xyz 1 month ago
mech@feddit.org 1 month ago
That looks just like nebula (also a creator-owned platform), but with exclusively communist content.
FreeBeard@slrpnk.net 1 month ago
Nebula is very US-centric in content, payment and organisation. I would love a more international approach.
Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Yea. It has always interested me, but I’ve never subscribed as I could only ever watch its documentaries alone, being the only person who understand English well enough in my family.
mech@feddit.org 1 month ago
True. For less US-centric content there are only the streaming services of different country’s public TV stations.
But they’re financed by national taxes or fees, so they limit access to within the country.

I have been on the edge for a while now, I’ll probably end up at least trying it after my vacation. Do you really think it’s worth the subscription price?
FrederikNJS@piefed.zip 1 month ago
To me it’s definitely worth it. Many of my favorite creators are already on there. I get exclusives and early releases, high definition, and no ads. And the nice fuzzy feeling of knowing that my views result in the creator receiving some actual money.
I still use YouTube quite a lot… But I find that I’m using Nebula more and more as time goes by.
mech@feddit.org 1 month ago
Depends what you want out of it.
I’m not aware of any content on nebula that isn’t also on YouTube.
So if you’re happy with the YouTube experience, probably not.I joined when Tom Scott started posting his videos there one week earlier than YouTube, and offered a discount code for 50% off for the first year.
1 year for $30 is worth it to me.I was sick of clicking on an interesting-looking video in the YT feed that turned out to be AI slop or rage bait.
And the autoplay of the next video the algorithm chooses annoyed me, too. YT was also the last Google service I still used, so ditching it felt good.
Plus, my favorite creator Real Time History thanks people watching on nebula at the end of each video, saying “We couldn’t do it without you”, which makes me all fuzzy inside.bdonvr@thelemmy.club 1 month ago
Do you watch a lot of YouTube and at least a few are saying they are on Nebula? Then absolutely
cRazi_man@europe.pub 1 month ago
I got it, then saw that its app sucked, then stopped using it for months despite having a valid subscription, then found the Gray Jay app, then found that I can queue all my videos together seamlessly in an excellent player and now slowly I’m watching more and more Nebula content and cutting out more and more YouTube content.
Nebula has a lot of stuff I like (long form, deep dive, factual, analytic videos). Now that my videos across platforms can be in one place, its easier to accept the more limited selection on Nebula. As I find more stuff on Nebula and unsubscribe from more stuff on YouTube, my whole video stream diet is getting better and better. The value of Nebula is slowly increasing for me. I wouldn’t have continued at all or renewed my subscription if I was using their default app and going between multiple apps for my video streams; and if that was the case it had been much easier for me to stick with YouTube and Newpipe app.
Igilq@szmer.info 1 month ago
What is nebula? Is it better or worse than yt?
mech@feddit.org 1 month ago
It’s a creator-owned video hosting site.
So no ads, no tracking, no algorithms designed to maximize engagement, no clickbait.
But it’s subscription only with a monthly or yearly cost, with all money going towards the creators and hosting cost.
The content is curated manually, so there’s a lot less than on YouTube, but the average quality is much higher IMO.
Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Expect it’s a empty devoid worthless cuck club of invite only nothingness.
There’s literally no upside to the concept.
sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 1 month ago
I really recommend having a youtube feed that is just subscriptions. No recommended section. It’s quite nice
lepinkainen@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I recommend not having a feed and instead using a self hosted RSS service like FreshRSS to subscribe to channels you care about
Then you can use filters to drop out the boring bits like shorts from the feed easily.
melfie@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
NewPipe excels at this task.
wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 1 month ago
That’s how I’ve used yt for like, 15 years? Nothing on the homepage is relevant, if I want to see new ‘creators’ I find them organically from the ones I already watch, or recommendations by friends. I actually forgot that the homepage isn’t the subscription feed a couple years ago and was like ‘the fuck is all this shit’ (I don’t use the website that often, got logged out).
DannyMac@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Their fucking algorithm does a good job wasting hours of my day.
Addv4@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Yep. I just wish there was an option to block most of the videos from specific channels. I’ve had to unsubscribe to some because they kept constantly pushing updates and new videos to the point where it was kinda hard to see other videos (france24 if anyone is interested).
Alberat@lemmy.world 1 month ago
sometimes i dont realize and then they mispronounce a word like tzar (saying T-Zar) and then im like oh shit this was ai voice
callyral@pawb.social 1 month ago
I prefer normal text-to-speech (with subtitles ideally) if the person making the video can’t speak themselves. Vocaloids/UTAUs can also be used for voicing but I imagine that’s a lot of tedious work. They can also pay someone or ask a friend to voice their script for them.
AI generated voices are a sign that the whole thing is slop. Not worth watching. Same applies for AI generated thumbnails.
richie_golds@lemmy.ca 1 month ago
God, if there was only one AI thing that really drives me up the wall, it has to be those frickin’ AI voices. They make a video literally unwatchable for me.
I saw an odd pattern that probably has an easy explanation (views). While I was looking for reviews of a certain newly launched car model, I saw A LOT of videos where all they did was repeat the manufacturer-supplied information with stock photos and videos from the manufacturer, using those gaudy and cringe-worthy AI voice overs, while providing nothing new or of substance. They weren’t reviews, they were just… telling us the same thing we already knew. Like, those videos existed for the sake of existing.
The funniest part were all the generic channel names. Auto Review, Car News Now, Gear Review, random stuff like that.
It is some of the laziest and most… cash-grabby type of thing and I found it so weird and annoying. I think it’s meant as a cheap and fast way to get views without doing any actual work, but the algorithm wasn’t favouring them. I don’t think I saw a single one of those videos listed with more than 1,000 views. Many had less than 100 views, and that was despite being uploaded days or weeks prior to the search. They probably just asked some AI “make a script about such-and-such car”, copy-pasted whatever it threw out without even looking at it, made the AI read it, and called it a day. Wow, such value.
Like, I don’t really like my own voice if I’m being honest, but I’d rather read a script myself than make an AI do it. It’s authentic.
I used FreeTube to search for reviews for that car, and I don’t think it favours YouTube’s algorithm as much, so I was seeing weird nonsense like that. And there was just so much of it, it made it hard to find actual good content when I had to weed through all that sloppy nonsense. Like, for every legit video made by someone who could actually see and drive the car, there were probably five or six slop videos.

You forgot one step: “Don’t recomend videos from this channel”
kamen@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I’m a frequent user of that feature - especially for cases when the first thing I see from a channel is a clickbait thumbnail with a “shocked” face on it. I understand that it’s a working tactic for some channels, but unless I know the channel and can assume the video would be good despite the clickbait, I’m not going for it. It’s a trend that needs to die.

I watched a great video the other day with ai voice, but the creator had a disclaimer at the start saying (in his natural voice) that he thought his accent was too strong for people.
All the comments (barring a few chuds) were people encouraging him to just use his natural voice as it was perfectly understandable and the AI voice was quite jarring in comparison.
So yeah even as an accessibility tool, I think people just find natural voices more trustworthy.

In vrchat some event DJs use ai voice for music and i either mute the world or leave the event instantly, it sounds so bad every time!
0x0@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
Core Dumped has very interesting videos and hte author doesn’t use his own voice. So no, i won’t skip.
Most content though… yeah, pretty skippable.Electricd@lemmybefree.net 1 month ago
Yea but it’s an indicator or overall lack of polish. Not always, but it’s likely
DannyMac@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Yeah sometimes I get it. The author doesn’t like their own voice, English isn’t their first language, or they’re trying to offer their video in multiple different languages. Usually you have to watch it for a bit to pick up on whether it was written by AI or not. Like someone else mentioned in this thread, it’s good to look at the frequency of video uploads for the channel and if they’re doing 20 to 30 minute videos everyday or at a pace that one would consider a breakneck speed for a human, you know it’s AI bullshit.
0x0@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
Definitely not this one and, come to think of it, i think he uses non-AI text-to-speech (mostly 'cos of his south american accent).
hodgepodgin@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
I know at least one channel that does so because they have a thick accent. Not all AI voices are bad
FrederikNJS@piefed.zip 1 month ago
I would frankly prefer a thick accent, and some subtitles… Even AI generated subtitles with a quick proofread pass, is vastly superior to AI voices IMO
Grntrenchman@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
See link with interesting title.
Look at actual domain, if it’s *tube/invidious immediately skip over link.
Click, see it’s loading (any) video site.
Immediately close page.
Skipping some steps here, usually fast enough that you don’t even have to hear voice.
If you won’t write it out in text, it’s not worth receiving the information.
kamen@lemmy.world 1 month ago
In a better world this would be caught by analytics and videos like that would be penalised - like it should happen for web search results. In reality we’re far from that unfortunately…

I am actually so thankful for the AI voices.
I used to feel guilty for dismissing videos with thick accents because I couldn’t tell if it was the content was trash or I just couldn’t understand the accent.
Now with AI voices I can confirm that the content was indeed just trash.
SharkAttak@kbin.melroy.org 1 month ago
What if it had auto-translation on?
ShouldIHaveFun@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
I had this issue a few times. If you watch a video in another language than what you have set in your settings, YouTube will now auto AI translate with a voiceover. It sounds horrible and is very annoying. It’s YouTube fault though, and not the creators’.

Shame youtube removed the like/dislike ratio which we previously used for mass protest against video authors for their wrongdoings. Channels can now shovel shit onto us with no public humiliation inflicted on them in return.
