But what I am implying is that if AI hadn’t jumped prices soo much, they probably could have gotten last gen 2tb drives for much less than $200, which would make them pretty price competitive. I got mine as the next Samsung pro line was launching (I believe I saw a few new ones for $300 at the time), and while they were a good deal at the time, they were not a unicorn. And given I’m pretty sure the steam machine only supports pcie4 drives, though I might be wrong about that (besides, almost no one needs pcie5 drives outside of very specific use cases), so again, if the AI madness hadn’t occurred, a $800 steam machine with 2tb of storage would have been a possibility. Which is yet another reason to say fuck AI.

I mean, before the AI bullshit picked up, I managed to get a couple of used Samsung 4tb 970 ssds for $250 a piece. $800 for a nice console/PC with that much storage wasn’t much of a reach then, given consoles usually are sold at cost to get you invested in the ecosystem.

Sounds great unless you don’t really agree with them, and then you’re forced to stay with people that you are constantly arguing with, often without much of the outlet of other places to go that a lot of places that have had multi generational households have had.

Been pirating books for a while. And in doing so, found a few authors I really like, so I ended up preordering some of their books and even recommending them to friends. AI doesn’t ever preorder their books, and will probably not recommend them to random people without being paid to advertise by the author. Which is why the argument of, “I pirate, so what’s the difference if AI does it?” kinda falls flat in my mind.

Yep. Genuinely would have gotten it if on steam, just want to make sure I can continue to play it if I want to in many years time.

Honestly, my suspicion is that you can easily get the stuff. I’ve gotten it for my dog once or twice (it’s a lot cheaper than dog dewormer, despite basically being the same thing), and all you have to do is go into a Tractor supply or the like and it’s right on the shelf, no restrictions or anything. This is in contrast to actual medicine, where I have to go to a CVS or the like to pay an overpriced amount for something that is more regulated, and might even be a bit of a placebo effect in the first place (look at flu meds for an example of that).
All of this mostly seems to speak more to the degrading of the American healthcare system due to costs ballooning beyond what some of the poorer in society can afford, so they are more willing to try folk remedies that may or may not work. And in the case of your grandmother, is she gonna risk paying a lot of her life savings to cure her tumors if they aren’t benign (without a guarantee that it will work), or is she just gonna hope that the $10 treatment might make her feel better? If they’re benign, then the $10 treatment “worked”, and if they’re not, then she’ll get expensive treatment anyway, just probably be in a worse position to get it.

Unfortunately, its beginning to be a little more complicated than that, as there are prints that can be generated by AI now. Also, some software that detects print issues is probably using AI based tangle detection (pretty it actually is more AI based than just ML, but if anyone knows better let me know). The irony is that this is becoming a pretty good shit post due to that new difference.

Yep. I just wish there was an option to block most of the videos from specific channels. I’ve had to unsubscribe to some because they kept constantly pushing updates and new videos to the point where it was kinda hard to see other videos (france24 if anyone is interested).

There are many more trolls on the Internet than people actually arguing in good faith. Lemmy is no exception, just hasn’t been around long enough to get all of the trolls like reddit has.

Huh, interesting. My old laptop was on x (i3wm), so I mostly had issues with that, and how the GPU would have to spin up if any of the usb c ports were being used, as they ran through the GPU (stupid design). Thankfully I don’t really have to worry about Nvidia anymore, new laptop (which is actually older) only has Intel integrated (specifically wanted to get away from Nvidia) and the desktop has an AMD gpu.
- Comment on Is spreading. 4 months ago:
Any issues with the GPU drivers switching between integrated and discrete? That’s what I was having issues with on my last laptop, didn’t really have too much else as a problem, and why I often hesitate to recommend people with laptops running Nvidia graphics to switch too quickly for that reason.
- Comment on Is spreading. 4 months ago:
Eh, the install for most distros is pretty hard to screw up, just be careful about your Nvidia drivers. I’ve had bad luck with laptops with Nvidia in past, but actually running the game in Linux (at least from steam/proton) should be pretty seamless.

Book club or maybe even some sort of 3d printing meetup? I’ve always found that the people that are interested in those probably would hit the other items on your list.
- Comment on Why do fancy cars look fancy and cheap cars don't? Can't you just slap a Lamborghini-style chassis onto a lawnmower engine if you want? 1 year ago:
It depends on the frame and the ideals of the manufacturer. You can make a sports car with essentially an economy motor from the same brand (Miata, MR2) or maybe a reliable engine from another (Lotus with Toyota engines), but largely it comes down to if the brand wants to spend money to do it.

Yep. Most of the time someone has marked it somehow because it’s immensely annoying. That being said, there are a few stations that aren’t able to be muted, so I intentionally make a point to note whatever is being advertised and never buy it.
