Its such a fundamentally stupid funding model. They really just need to get serious about how they plan to fund a national broadcaster in the 21st century - in the meantime I don’t see how they have any credibity to pressure people into paying it

I’m guessing based on the fact that he attended the park alone, was wearing headphones, and was visibly excited to see the tiger and asked strangers to take pictures of him with it. This suggests that he may have had sensory issues and a special interest in tigers which would be typical of autism/aspergers.
I agree it’s not really enough to be certain and I don’t want to go too far down the path of speculation. But it seems very possible to me, and I’ve personally known people with severe autism who I could imagine putting themselves in harms way like this without realising the danger. And it’s just so sickening hearing people all over the internet talk about this persons’ death in such a callous way without knowing anything of his personal circumstances.

Yeah sorry this is pretty horrible. From descriptions of the event it seems to me that that he was neurodivergent and didn’t really understand the danger.

The rationale behind it is they need to keep some reserves of cash in case of emergency or upfront funding for big projects, and the most financially sensible thing to do with the cash while it’s not in use is to invest it.
But yeah, I agree it’s a bit concerning. Hopefully there are some sort of guardrails in place

Breeder reactors are conceptually cool but nowhere near economical enough to be a practical solution at present. Only two still exist in the world, and both are operated in russia.
Regardless, to run a breeder reactor you still need to separate out fission products from the waste, which we havent been doing since the 60’s or 70’s. The sensible thing to to with fuel is to reprocess it by PUREX/SANEX like we used to. But unfortunately we now have this giant building of screaming-hot unprocessed waste

True, however the fact that its been around 70 years and we’ve still never been able to actually do this is a valid criticism. Even if the limited number of deep geological disposal projects all come online today, we’ll still be generating was much more quickly than we can bury it

After fuel has been in-pile for a full lifetime, it has fissioned, decayed and transmuted to the point where half the periodic table worth of radioactive isotopes have been produced and are all present in the same waste

It’s the fact that the only groups mobilising people to put flags on lampposts are the far-right ones. For migrant or LGBT folks living there, the flags are a constant reminder that people who hate them are close by and organised.

The funding model is at it’s root completely unsuited to the present day, it’s idiotic. It maybe made sense in the 60’s but not anymore. For the BBC to survive the government needs to have a good serious think about how it’s going to be funded.
